I keep saying it."

Matthew gave a small smile.

"Yeah."

I took a breath.

"I mean you don't have to remember it for it to have happened."

He looked down again.

"And you don't have to feel something just because the picture shows it."

He nodded.

I watched his thumb move along the photograph's edge.

It was the same movement he made when he was thinking.

I was beginning to recognize it.

He looked at me.

"Can I keep these?"

The question caught me off guard.

I had brought them hoping he would want to see them.

I had not dared imagine he would want to take them.

"Yes."

"All three?"

"All three."

He stacked them carefully.

Then he returned them to the bag.

"Thanks."

I nodded.

"You're welcome."

For a while, we sat without speaking.

The silence did not feel as frightening as it once had.

Matthew looked toward the window.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Anything."

"Did you keep my room?"

I felt my chest tighten.

I had expected that question eventually.

I had simply hoped I would know how to answer when it came.

"Some of it."

He turned toward me.

"What does that mean?"

I folded my hands.

"After you disappeared, I couldn't change anything for a long time."

He listened.

"Your clothes stayed where they were."

I stopped.

I did not want my sadness to become the most important thing in the room.

"Eventually, I packed some things away."

Matthew nodded.

"But I kept the photographs."

"And the truck?"

"Yes."

He looked thoughtful.

"Was that hard?"

I considered lying.

Something simple.

Something that would spare him.

But he had asked a real question.

He deserved a real answer.

"Yes."

He looked down.

I added something before he could misunderstand.

"But that wasn't your responsibility."

Matthew looked up.

"I know."

I nodded.

Then he asked whether the old house was still there.

I told him it was.

He asked whether I still lived in it.

I answered.

He wanted to know whether the kitchen looked the same.

I described the table.

The cupboards.

The window above the sink.

He listened with an expression I could not quite read.

Then he asked about the park in the photograph.

I told him about the wooden bench.

He wanted to know whether the fence was still white.

I admitted that I had no idea.

He laughed.

"You kept the truck but didn't check the fence?"

"Apparently."

He shook his head.

"That's funny."

I smiled.

"It is."

We talked about ordinary things for a long time.

I told him I still made pancakes badly.

He told me he preferred waffles.

I asked whether he liked coffee.

He made a face.

"Not really."

"Good. One less thing to argue about."

He grinned.

"Do you like it?"

"Too much."

Matthew laughed.

I began to understand what Ramirez had meant.

We did not have to accomplish anything.

We could sit together.

We could discover the small things that eleven years had changed.

I did not have to turn every conversation into an investigation.

At one point, Matthew asked whether I had expected him to remember the pictures.

"No."

"Then why bring them?"

I looked at the paper bag.

"Because they're yours too."

He considered that.

I continued.

"You had a life before the beach."

He nodded.

"I thought maybe you'd want to see pieces of it."

He looked down.

"Yeah."

Then he smiled.

"I do."

I felt something inside me loosen.

For years, the past had been a place where I went to grieve.

Now it was becoming something I could share.

Not all at once.

Not without difficulty.

But carefully.

Matthew leaned forward.

"Can I bring something tomorrow?"

I looked at him.

"Of course."

He seemed relieved.

"I have some pictures too."

My heart began beating harder.

"From the last eleven years?"

He nodded.

"Some."

I wanted to ask where they had been taken.

Who was standing beside him.

Who had been raising him.

Whether Robert appeared in any of them.

But I stopped.

Those questions would come when Matthew wanted to answer them.

Instead, I smiled.

"I'd like to see them."

He nodded.

"Okay."

A little later, Ramirez knocked.

Matthew looked toward the door.

"Already?"

Ramirez smiled slightly.

"We have another appointment scheduled."

Matthew glanced at me.

I could see the disappointment in his face.

I felt it too.

But I did not ask Ramirez to change the schedule.

I was learning that wanting more time did not mean I was entitled to take it.

Matthew gathered the paper bag.

He held it against his chest.

"Same time tomorrow?"

I smiled.

"If that works for you."

"It does."

We stood.

I looked at him.

"Would another hug be okay?"

He smiled.

"Yeah."

This time, he stepped toward me first.

It was a small movement.

But I felt it.

His arms went around me.

I held him carefully.

Not as the child in the photographs.

Not as the boy I had lost.

As the young man standing in front of me.

When we separated, he looked down.

Then he smiled.

"See you tomorrow, Dad."

The word still startled me.

Dad.

I had thought I would never hear it again.

"See you tomorrow, Matthew."

He left with the paper bag in his hand.

I remained standing until the door closed.

Then I sat down.

Ramirez waited quietly.

I looked at the empty chair.

"He wants to bring photographs tomorrow."

Ramirez nodded.

"That's good."

I smiled.

"Yes."

He opened the folder he had carried earlier.

I noticed immediately.

My attention returned to the other reason I was there.

Robert.

The pool.

The unanswered questions.

But before Ramirez could speak, I looked at him.

"Can I ask one thing?"

"Of course."

"Whatever you find out about Robert, please don't make Matthew hear it from me as a guess."

Ramirez studied my face.

"We'll be careful."

I nodded.

"I want him to know the truth."

"So do I."

"But I don't want him carrying my suspicions."

Ramirez closed the folder halfway.

"That's important, Dan."

I looked at the adjoining door.

Matthew had taken the photographs with him.

Somewhere on the other side, he was holding pieces of his childhood.

I had spent years believing those pieces were all I would ever have.

Now he could hold them himself.

And tomorrow, he wanted to show me pieces of the life he had lived without me.

I knew those photographs might be difficult to see.

I knew they might show people who had been present when I was not.

I knew they might force me to confront things I still did not understand.

But they belonged to Matthew.

His life had continued even when I believed it had ended.

I had to learn how to honor that.

Not by pretending the eleven years did not matter.

Not by demanding explanations for every missing day.

But by listening.

I stood and picked up my coat.

Ramirez walked me toward the door.

"Tomorrow?" he asked.

I nodded.

"Tomorrow."

Outside, the morning had grown warmer.

I returned to my car.

The passenger seat was empty.

The little paper bag was gone.

For a moment, I stared at the place where it had rested.

Then I smiled.

Matthew had taken it.

My son had wanted something from our old life.

And for once, the past was not only something I was mourning.

It was something I had been able to give him.
