15 – Sitting Beside Matthew With the Old Beach Photograph Between Us, I Faced the Memory I Had Avoided Since the Day He Disappeared

Matthew kept looking at the bucket.

His finger rested near the edge of the photograph.

I watched him without speaking.

He looked older when he concentrated.

His eyebrows drew together.

His mouth became a straight line.

It was another small detail I was learning about him.

I wondered whether he had done the same thing as a child.

Maybe.

I could not honestly remember.

For eleven years, I had treated my memories of Matthew as something complete.

Now I was discovering how many details I had forgotten.

Not just from the day he disappeared.

From the ordinary days before it.

I had forgotten small expressions.

The exact sound of his footsteps.

The way he looked when he was thinking.

That realization hurt more than I expected.

I had believed grief preserved everything.

It did not.

Some memories remained sharp.

Others faded no matter how tightly I tried to hold them.

Matthew looked up.

"Was I happy that day?"

I stared at him.

He was still looking at the photograph.

I followed his eyes.

The red bucket.

The children's club.

Robert behind him.

I thought about the laughter.

The ordinary feeling of the morning.

I took a breath.

"You seemed happy when I saw you."

Matthew nodded slowly.

"Okay."

He returned to the picture.

I wanted to say more.

I wanted to tell him how normal everything had felt.

How I had expected the day to continue without trouble.

How I had no idea it would become the memory that followed me for eleven years.

But he had asked a simple question.

I had answered it.

I did not need to turn every answer into a confession.

Matthew moved his finger toward Robert.

"Did he take this picture?"

I looked carefully.

"I don't know."

He nodded.

"Right."

I felt embarrassed.

There were so many things I did not know.

Matthew seemed to notice.

He looked at me.

"You don't have to know everything."

I gave a tired smile.

"I wish I did."

He looked back at the picture.

"Me too."

We sat quietly.

Ramirez remained nearby.

He did not interrupt.

After a while, Matthew leaned back.

"I thought seeing this might make me remember something."

I looked at him.

"Did it?"

He shook his head.

"Not really."

I felt disappointed.

I tried not to show it.

Matthew continued.

"I remember the bucket."

He looked down.

"And I remember kids."

He paused.

"But when I look at Robert, I don't know what to think."

I nodded.

"That's all right."

He gave me a small, frustrated smile.

"You always say that."

I laughed quietly.

"I know."

He looked at the photograph again.

"I'm trying."

I felt my chest tighten.

"Matthew."

He raised his eyes.

"You don't have to prove anything."

He stared at me.

I continued.

"Not to me."

He looked down.

"Or Ramirez."

I glanced toward Ramirez.

He nodded.

"That's right."

Matthew let out a slow breath.

For a moment, he looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

As though the photograph had demanded something from him he could not provide.

I knew that feeling.

I had spent eleven years searching my own memories for an answer.

I had taken ordinary details and examined them until they no longer felt ordinary.

I had wondered whether every sound, every movement, every decision contained something I had missed.

Now Matthew was doing something similar.

I did not want him trapped in the same place.

I moved my chair back slightly.

"Do you want to stop?"

He considered the question.

Then nodded.

"Yeah."

Ramirez reached toward the photograph.

Matthew handed it back.

I watched his fingers leave the paper.

The bucket was still visible.

The picture was still the same.

But I had learned something important.

Matthew did not owe us a memory.

He did not have to become certain just because the adults around him wanted certainty.

I looked at Ramirez.

"Can we talk later?"

He nodded.

"Of course."

Matthew stood.

I stood beside him.

He glanced at me.

"Are you coming?"

I looked surprised.

"Where?"

He gave a small smile.

"Back to the other room."

I laughed softly.

"Yes."

We walked through the adjoining door.

The same two chairs were waiting.

Matthew sat.

I sat across from him.

He looked at the water cup.

Then at me.

"Can we talk about something else?"

"Anything."

He smiled.

"You're going to say that every time, aren't you?"

"Probably."

He laughed.

I laughed too.

The sound felt strange after the weight of the photograph.

But it was good.

For a while, we talked without mentioning Robert.

Without mentioning the pool.

Without mentioning the ocean.

I listened to Matthew.

Sometimes I asked questions.

Sometimes he asked me questions.

There were awkward pauses.

There were moments when neither of us knew what to say.

But we stayed.

That was what mattered.

After a while, Matthew leaned back.

"Do you ever get tired of thinking about it?"

I knew what he meant.

The disappearance.

The missing years.

The unanswered questions.

"Yes."

He nodded.

"Me too."

I looked at him.

"But I don't know how to stop."

Matthew stared at the table.

"I don't either."

We sat quietly.

Then he looked at me.

"Do you think we have to figure everything out before we can be okay?"

The question stayed with me.

I had spent eleven years believing an answer would fix something.

If I knew where Matthew had gone, I would understand.

If I knew why he disappeared, I could stop blaming myself.

If I knew what Robert had done, I could finally settle the doubts.

But Matthew was sitting across from me.

Alive.

And I was beginning to understand that some things could not be repaired by information alone.

Even if Ramirez learned exactly what happened, the missing years would remain missing.

Even if Robert had an explanation, Matthew would still have grown up without me.

Even if every clue was settled, we would still have to learn how to be father and son again.

I looked at him.

"No."

He seemed surprised.

"You don't?"

I shook my head.

"I want answers."

He nodded.

"But I don't think we have to wait for them before we start knowing each other."

Matthew considered that.

Then he smiled faintly.

"Good."

I felt relieved.

Not because he had promised anything.

Because we had agreed on something simple.

We could keep asking questions.

And we could keep living.

Those two things did not have to happen one after the other.

They could happen together.

Matthew looked at the door.

"Do you think Ramirez will find out?"

"I hope so."

He nodded.

Then he looked back at me.

"But tomorrow we can just talk?"

I smiled.

"Yes."

"No photograph?"

"Not unless you want one."

He nodded.

"Okay."

I leaned back.

For the first time since seeing him again, I felt something close to calm.

It did not last long.

My thoughts returned to Robert.

To the pool.

To the memory I had ignored.

But the feeling had existed.

That mattered.

I looked at Matthew.

He was watching the window.

I wondered what he was thinking.

Then I stopped myself.

I did not need to know everything.

Not immediately.

Not all at once.

I could ask.

I could listen.

I could learn.

I could let him be the person he was.

The photograph had brought us back to the day everything changed.

But it did not have to control every moment that followed.

I looked at my son.

And I made another quiet decision.

I would keep asking what happened.

But I would not allow the search for the past to take away the time we had now.
