13 – The Morning After Matthew Asked to See Me Again, I Discovered That Having My Son Back Did Not Mean Knowing How to Be His Father

I was afraid to sleep.

That sounds foolish now.

Matthew was alive.

I had seen him.

I had heard his voice.

I had held him in my arms.

And still, when I closed my eyes that night, I was afraid I would wake up and discover none of it had happened.

I kept remembering the hug.

The way he stood still at first.

The way his arms finally came around me.

The way he stepped back when he was ready.

I had waited eleven years for that moment.

It lasted only a few seconds.

I would not have changed a thing.

I sat on the edge of my bed and looked at my hands.

They were the same hands that had held Matthew when he was little.

I remembered carrying him when he was tired.

I remembered the weight of him against my shoulder.

Now he was nearly grown.

He had stood in front of me, taller than I expected, and asked whether we could talk again.

Tomorrow.

That was what he had said.

One ordinary word.

I kept repeating it.

Tomorrow.

For eleven years, tomorrow had meant another day without answers.

Now it meant I might hear my son's voice again.

I did not know what to do with that kind of hope.

I had become too familiar with disappointment.

Hope felt dangerous.

I tried lying down.

Then I sat up again.

I thought about the photograph.

Matthew holding his red bucket.

Robert standing behind him.

I could see that picture as clearly as if it were still on the table in front of me.

The photograph had not changed.

But everything it meant to me had.

For years, I had looked at pictures of Matthew as reminders of what was gone.

Now I knew the little boy in those pictures had continued living.

He had grown taller.

His voice had changed.

He had learned things without me.

He had become a person I was only beginning to know.

That should have made me happy.

It did.

But there was grief inside the happiness.

I had never imagined those two feelings could sit so close together.

I wanted to ask him about every year.

Every birthday.

Every ordinary morning.

I wanted to know who had comforted him when he was frightened.

Who had listened when he was upset.

Who had watched him grow.

But he had asked me not to make every conversation about the missing years.

I had agreed.

I meant to keep that agreement.

The next morning, I woke before I needed to.

I had barely slept.

For a few seconds, I forgot what had happened.

Then I remembered Matthew's face.

Not the face in the photograph.

The face of the young man sitting across from me.

I sat upright.

He was alive.

I said it aloud.

"My son is alive."

The room remained quiet.

There was no one there to answer.

But for the first time in eleven years, the words were not a wish.

They were true.

I washed my face.

I looked in the mirror.

I wondered what Matthew saw when he looked at me.

A father?

A stranger?

A man who had become older while he was away?

I had spent so much time worrying about whether I would recognize him.

I had barely considered whether he would recognize me.

Yesterday, he had called me Dad.

I remembered how naturally the word had come out.

I also remembered how embarrassed he looked afterward.

I did not want to turn that moment into an obligation.

If he called me Dan today, I would answer.

If he called me Dad, I would answer.

If he needed silence, I would try to give him that too.

I was learning how little I controlled.

Eleven years earlier, I had believed I could keep my son safe by leaving him with someone I trusted.

That belief had been shattered.

Now I needed a different kind of trust.

I needed to trust Matthew to tell me what he was comfortable with.

It sounded simple.

It was not.

I wanted to protect him from every difficult feeling.

But I could not protect him from the past.

I could not protect him from unanswered questions.

And I could not undo the years we had spent apart.

When I saw Ramirez again, he looked as tired as I felt.

He greeted me quietly.

"Morning, Dan."

"Morning."

I looked toward the adjoining room.

"Is Matthew here?"

Ramirez nodded.

"He's here."

I felt myself breathe more easily.

Then I was ashamed of needing that reassurance.

Matthew was not a little boy I could keep within sight.

He was entitled to move through the world without my fear following him everywhere.

Ramirez noticed my expression.

"How are you doing?"

I almost gave the usual answer.

Fine.

Instead, I shook my head.

"I didn't sleep much."

He nodded.

"That's understandable."

I looked at the door.

"Did he sleep?"

"I don't want to speak for him."

I nodded.

That was fair.

I had to remember that Matthew had his own private life.

Even now.

Especially now.

Ramirez gestured toward the chairs.

"Before you see him, there's something I want to say."

I sat down.

My stomach tightened.

I had begun to associate conversations with Ramirez with information that changed everything.

He seemed to notice.

"Nothing alarming."

I let out a breath.

He continued.

"Yesterday was a lot for both of you."

I nodded.

"Matthew may feel differently from one day to the next."

I looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

"He may want to talk. He may need distance. He may remember something and then become unsure about it."

I stared at my hands.

"He asked to see me."

"Yes."

"Do you think he'll change his mind?"

"I don't know."

That answer frightened me.

Ramirez leaned forward.

"But if he needs space, it doesn't mean he's rejecting you."

I wanted to believe that.

I knew he was right.

Still, the thought of Matthew walking away made something inside me tighten.

"I already lost him once."

Ramirez did not correct me.

He waited.

"I know he's alive," I said.

"I know that changes everything."

I swallowed.

"But I don't know how to stop being afraid."

Ramirez regarded me carefully.

"You don't have to stop feeling afraid today."

I nodded.

"You do need to make sure your fear doesn't decide everything for him."

That was difficult to hear.

Because I knew it was true.

Yesterday, Matthew had asked what I wanted from him.

I had told him I wanted to know him.

Now I needed to act like I meant it.

Knowing someone meant allowing them to make choices.

Even choices that frightened you.

I looked toward the door.

"Can I see him?"

Ramirez stood.

"I'll ask."

He went into the adjoining room.

I stayed in my chair.

I could hear faint voices.

Not the words.

Just the sound of a conversation.

Then the door opened.

Matthew appeared beside Ramirez.

He was wearing the same careful expression I remembered from yesterday.

But when he saw me, he smiled.

Small.

Real.

"Hey."

I stood.

"Hey."

He looked me over.

"You look tired."

I laughed softly.

"So do you."

He shrugged.

"Didn't sleep much."

I nodded.

"Me neither."

For a moment, we looked at each other.

Then Matthew glanced toward the table.

"Can we sit?"

"Of course."

We sat across from each other again.

The same chairs.

The same quiet room.

I noticed there was another cup of water on the table.

It made me smile.

Matthew caught the expression.

"What?"

"Nothing."

He raised an eyebrow.

I shook my head.

"I just remember yesterday."

He looked at the cup.

Then he smiled too.

"Yeah."

We sat quietly.

I wanted to ask whether he had been thinking about our hug.

I wanted to ask whether he regretted it.

I wanted to ask whether he had called me Dad because he meant it.

Instead, I asked whether he wanted to talk.

He nodded.

"Yeah."

"About anything in particular?"

He thought for a moment.

"Yesterday."

My chest tightened.

"Okay."

He looked down.

"I didn't know what it would feel like."

"Seeing me?"

He nodded.

I waited.

He rubbed his fingers together.

"I thought it would be easier to know what to say."

I smiled sadly.

"So did I."

He looked relieved.

I leaned back.

"I'd imagined it a hundred different ways."

Matthew watched me.

"Really?"

"More than that."

He looked down.

"Was it like you imagined?"

I thought about the door.

The chair.

The cup.

His guarded expression.

His voice.

The hug.

"No."

He looked uncertain.

I smiled.

"It was better in some ways."

He raised his eyes.

"And harder in others."

Matthew nodded.

"Yeah."

I looked at him.

"Was it difficult for you?"

He considered that.

"A little."

I waited.

He looked toward the window.

"I knew you were my father."

I felt my throat tighten.

"But I didn't know you."

I nodded slowly.

There was nothing cruel about the way he said it.

It was simply true.

I was his father.

And I was someone he needed to get to know.

I looked down at my hands.

"That's fair."

Matthew studied me.

"You're not upset?"

I shook my head.

"No."

He seemed surprised.

I continued.

"I missed eleven years of your life."

I paused.

"I can't expect you to act like I didn't."

He nodded.

For a while, we sat quietly.

Then he smiled faintly.

"I liked talking yesterday."

I looked up.

"So did I."

He leaned back.

"Can we do that again?"

I smiled.

"That's why I'm here."

Matthew laughed.

It was the same brief laugh I remembered from yesterday.

But this time, I did not feel the need to hold on to it.

I simply listened.

He began telling me about himself.

Small things.

Ordinary things.

I listened without trying to turn each answer into a clue.

That was harder than I expected.

Every part of me wanted to understand the missing years.

But Matthew had asked me for something else.

He wanted a conversation.

Not an investigation.

So I gave him one.

When he asked about my life, I answered.

When he was quiet, I waited.

When he smiled, I smiled back.

And when he seemed uncertain, I did not rush to reassure him.

I was beginning to understand that being his father now would require patience I had never needed when he was small.

Back then, I could pick him up.

I could guide him by the hand.

I could tell him everything would be all right.

Now he needed something different.

He needed to know I could hear an uncomfortable truth without becoming angry.

He needed to know I would not force him to remember.

He needed to know he could make his own choices.

I looked at him across the table.

For the first time, I stopped trying to see the little boy with the bucket.

I saw Matthew.

The person sitting in front of me.

And I understood that getting my son back was not the end of our separation.

It was the beginning of learning how to be together again.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: Matthew Asked Me What I Remembered About Robert, and I Realized the Answers I
