10 – Matthew Wanted to Know Why Everyone Believed the Ocean Had Taken Him, and I Had to Admit How Little I Really Knew

The next question came without warning.

Matthew had been looking at the cup of water.

Then he raised his head.

"Who decided I drowned?"

I stared at him.

It was a question I should have asked eleven years earlier.

Not because I had never wondered.

I had wondered constantly.

But somewhere along the way, I had accepted the answer everyone repeated.

The ocean had taken him.

That explanation had become part of my life.

I had stopped hearing it as a claim.

I heard it as a fact.

Now Matthew was sitting across from me.

Alive.

And the explanation sounded different.

"I don't know who said it first," I admitted.

He frowned.

"Nobody saw?"

I shook my head.

"I didn't."

"What about Robert?"

I felt my hands tighten.

"I don't know what he saw."

Matthew studied me.

"You were with him that day?"

"Yes."

"Before I disappeared?"

"Yes."

He nodded slowly.

I could see him thinking about the photograph.

I wondered what he understood about Robert.

I wondered whether the name meant something more to him than it did to me.

But I would not ask leading questions.

Not now.

"Robert was at the children's club," I said.

"That's what the photograph shows."

Matthew looked down.

"With me."

"Yes."

He rubbed his forehead.

"I don't remember what happened after."

I nodded.

"I know."

He looked frustrated.

"I wish I did."

I wanted to tell him I wished the same thing.

But that would have been unfair.

His memory was not a missing piece he owed me.

It belonged to him.

So I kept quiet.

Matthew leaned back.

"Did you go into the water looking for me?"

The question made my throat tighten.

I thought about the panic.

The searching.

The fear.

But I could not give him a precise answer about every movement I had made.

Not without risking another false memory.

"I remember looking for you," I said.

"I remember being terrified."

He watched me.

"I don't remember every detail clearly."

He nodded.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then he asked something that made me feel even worse.

"Did you think I'd done something wrong?"

I looked at him.

"What?"

"Like wandered off when I wasn't supposed to."

I shook my head immediately.

"No."

He lowered his eyes.

"Kids do that."

"Matthew."

He looked up.

"You were a child."

He said nothing.

"It was the adults' job to keep you safe."

I felt the words settle inside me.

I had not said them aloud in eleven years.

Not like that.

I had spent so much time blaming myself that I had almost forgotten how small Matthew had been.

In the photograph, he was holding a red bucket.

He was not responsible for understanding danger.

He was not responsible for knowing whom to trust.

He had been a little boy.

I looked down.

"I should have made sure you were safe."

Matthew shifted.

"You thought I was."

I raised my eyes.

He was looking at me carefully.

"You said Robert was watching me."

"Yes."

"So you thought I was safe."

I nodded.

"Yes."

He looked at the table again.

"Then you didn't know."

I wanted to accept that as forgiveness.

But it was not forgiveness.

It was Matthew trying to understand what happened.

There was a difference.

I had to respect it.

"I didn't know," I said.

"But I wish I'd checked."

He nodded.

We left it there.

After a few minutes, Matthew looked toward the door.

"Can Ramirez come back?"

"Of course."

I stood and opened it.

Ramirez appeared almost immediately.

Matthew looked at him.

"I want to ask something."

Ramirez came inside.

"Go ahead."

Matthew hesitated.

Then he asked the same question he had asked me.

"Why did everybody think I was in the ocean?"

Ramirez looked at him.

I could see that he was choosing his answer carefully.

"The information available at the time led people to believe that."

Matthew frowned.

"But nobody saw me go in?"

Ramirez did not answer immediately.

"We're still reviewing what happened."

Matthew looked disappointed.

I recognized the feeling.

I had spent years waiting for answers from people who were trying to explain an event nobody fully understood.

Now my son was facing the same uncertainty.

Only his questions were different.

He was not asking why his child disappeared.

He was asking why his own life had been understood incorrectly.

Ramirez sat down.

"Matthew, it's important that we don't fill gaps in your memory with somebody else's assumptions."

Matthew nodded.

"I know."

"You can tell us what you remember."

"Even if it doesn't make sense?"

"Yes."

Matthew rubbed his hands together.

"I remember the bucket."

Ramirez nodded.

"And the other kids."

"All right."

"And somebody laughing."

I kept my face still.

Robert's laugh came into my mind.

I wanted to say his name.

I did not.

Matthew looked from Ramirez to me.

"That's all I know for sure."

Ramirez nodded.

"Then that's enough for now."

Matthew looked relieved.

I felt relieved too.

Not because we had learned anything new.

Because nobody had pressured him to invent the missing pieces.

For eleven years, I had been desperate for certainty.

Now I was beginning to understand that certainty could be dangerous when it came too easily.

Ramirez turned toward me.

"Dan, I need to ask you something."

I nodded.

"When you returned from checking out the excursion, did you personally see Matthew near the ocean?"

"No."

"Did you see him leave the children's club?"

"No."

"Did you see Robert take him anywhere?"

I paused.

"No."

Ramirez nodded.

Matthew watched me.

I felt exposed.

Those three answers made my knowledge seem terribly small.

I had remembered the beginning.

I had remembered the panic afterward.

But the moment that connected them was missing.

I looked at my son.

"I'm sorry."

He shook his head.

"Dad."

I went still.

He had said it naturally.

Without thinking.

Dad.

For a second, every other sound seemed to disappear.

Matthew noticed my expression.

He looked embarrassed.

"Sorry."

I shook my head.

"No."

My voice broke.

"Please don't apologize."

He looked uncertain.

I tried to smile.

"It's good to hear."

Matthew lowered his eyes.

He nodded.

Ramirez looked away, giving us a moment.

I was grateful for that.

After eleven years of hearing Matthew spoken about as someone who was gone, one ordinary word had changed the room.

Dad.

I knew it did not solve anything.

I knew it did not give us back his childhood.

I knew tomorrow might be difficult.

And the day after that.

But something had happened that I had stopped expecting.

My son had called me his father.

I looked at the cup of water.

I looked at his hands.

Then I looked at his face.

I wanted to remember all of it.

Not the version I would tell other people.

Not the version I would polish into a comforting story.

Just the truth of the moment.

Matthew was sitting across from me.

He had questions.

I had questions.

Neither of us had enough answers.

But for the first time in eleven years, we were asking them together.
