Not what you think it means."

I nodded.

That was harder than it sounded.

For eleven years, I had been attaching meaning to the same memories.

The ocean meant Matthew was gone.

The panic meant something had happened in the water.

Robert standing still meant he was shocked.

I had never separated the details from my explanations.

Now I tried.

"Robert was near the pool."

Ramirez nodded.

"He wasn't searching the beach when I saw him."

Another nod.

"He wasn't calling Matthew's name."

Ramirez wrote.

I looked at the photograph.

"That's what I remember."

He waited.

I could tell he expected me to continue.

But there was nothing else I could state with the same certainty.

I had not seen Matthew enter the water.

I had not seen anyone take him away.

I had not witnessed the moment he disappeared.

I had left him at the children's club.

And when I returned, he was missing.

Everything else needed to be examined.

I leaned back.

For a while, I stared at the ceiling.

There was a faint humming noise above us.

I wondered whether Matthew could hear our voices through the door.

I hoped not.

I did not want him to hear me questioning the man who had stood behind him in the photograph.

Not before we understood why.

Ramirez looked at me.

"Are you all right?"

I gave a tired laugh.

"I don't know how to answer that anymore."

He waited.

I rubbed my eyes.

"He's alive."

I glanced toward the door.

"My son is alive."

The words still felt unfamiliar.

For eleven years, I had practiced speaking about Matthew in the past tense.

He liked this.

He used to do that.

He had a red bucket.

Now he was sitting in another room.

He had asked me questions.

He had drunk water.

He had remembered the way I said his name.

I felt my throat tighten.

"I don't know what I'm supposed to do with that."

Ramirez put his pen down.

"You don't have to work everything out today."

I nodded.

But the questions were still there.

I could not leave them alone.

"Do you think Matthew remembers more?"

Ramirez considered that.

"He may."

I looked at him.

"Should I ask him?"

"Not if you're trying to make him remember something."

I lowered my eyes.

I knew what he meant.

I had wanted answers so badly that I had nearly said Robert's name when Matthew mentioned someone laughing.

That could have changed the way Matthew remembered the event.

Or made him believe he remembered something he did not.

I did not want that.

I wanted the truth.

Not the version that relieved me of guilt.

Not the version that gave me someone to blame.

The truth.

I looked at the photograph again.

"Matthew remembers the bucket."

Ramirez nodded.

"He told me."

"He remembers other children."

"Yes."

"And somebody laughing."

Ramirez watched me.

"But he doesn't know who."

"No."

I swallowed.

"I thought of Robert."

Ramirez did not respond.

"I didn't say it to Matthew."

"Good."

I felt relieved.

It was a small thing.

But after years of wondering whether I had failed my son, it mattered to hear that I had made one careful choice.

Ramirez moved the photograph closer.

"Memories from that long ago can be incomplete."

"I know."

"And people can become certain about things they only heard afterward."

I nodded.

"Matthew said something like that."

"He understands the problem."

I stared at the photograph.

The little red bucket stood out against everything around it.

For eleven years, that object had belonged to a memory of loss.

Now it was also something Matthew remembered.

A point where our two accounts touched.

That was all.

But it mattered.

I put my finger near the edge of the photograph.

"Do you know what bothers me most?"

Ramirez waited.

"I trusted Robert."

I looked up.

"I didn't just leave Matthew somewhere and hope somebody would notice him."

"I left him with someone who told me he'd look after him."

My voice tightened.

"And when I came back, that same person was standing by the pool."

Ramirez nodded slowly.

I pressed my hands together.

"I keep trying to remember whether I asked him why."

"Did you?"

I shook my head.

"I don't know."

That was the truth.

I had questioned myself for years about leaving Matthew.

But I could not remember ever pressing Robert about his position near the pool.

I could not remember asking why he was not searching.

I had explained his behavior to myself.

I had filled in the blank.

And then I had carried that explanation through eleven years of grief.

I looked at Ramirez.

"I don't want to do that again."

"Do what?"

"Decide what happened before we know."

He watched me carefully.

I continued.

"I don't know what Robert did."

"I don't know what Matthew remembers."

"And I don't know why everyone believed the ocean took him."

I stopped.

My hands were trembling again.

"But I know my son is alive."

Ramirez nodded.

"Yes."

I glanced toward the adjoining door.

"Can I see him again?"

Ramirez stood.

"Let me check with him."

I watched him walk toward the door.

This time, I did not follow immediately.

I looked at the photograph on the table.

Matthew with the red bucket.

Robert behind him.

That moment would always belong to the day my son disappeared.

I could not change it.

I could not make myself go back downstairs sooner.

I could not make the past happen differently.

But I was no longer looking at the picture of a child I believed had died.

Matthew was alive.

There were questions we still needed to answer.

Robert's behavior remained unexplained.

And the eleven missing years could never be returned to us.

Ramirez opened the adjoining door and spoke quietly to Matthew.

I could not make out the words.

Then I heard my son's voice.

"Yeah. He can come back."

I closed my eyes for a moment.

I had spent eleven years wishing I could hear that voice.

Now it was calling me back into the room.

I stood.

And this time, when I walked toward the door, I did not look back at Robert's photograph.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: When I Walked Back Into the Room, Matthew Asked Me a Question That Made Me See Our Eleven Lost Years Differently

Ramirez took out a sheet of paper.
