5 – When Ramirez Finally Opened the Door, I Was About to Meet the Son I Had Spent Eleven Years Mourning

I thought I would recognize him immediately.

That was the first foolish thing I believed.

Ramirez rose from his chair.

I watched him put one hand on the folder lying beside the photograph.

He did not close it.

He only moved it aside.

The picture of Matthew remained on the table.

That little red bucket was still visible.

I looked at it once more before standing.

My knees felt weak.

I had spent eleven years imagining this moment.

I had rehearsed the words I might say.

I had pictured Matthew running toward me.

I had imagined holding him so tightly that neither of us would ever have to wonder where the other had gone.

None of those imagined reunions had included a police interview room.

None had included Robert's photograph.

And none had included the terrible thought that my son might be afraid of me.

Ramirez walked toward the adjoining door.

I followed.

He stopped before opening it.

"Dan, I need you to understand something."

I stared at his hand resting on the doorknob.

"What?"

"He knows you're here."

I nodded.

That should have comforted me.

Instead, it made my stomach tighten.

"Does he want to see me?"

Ramirez took a moment before answering.

"He agreed to meet you."

Agreed.

I kept thinking about that word.

My son had agreed to meet his father.

Once, he would have followed me around the house asking me to watch everything he did.

Now meeting me was something he had to decide.

Eleven years could do that.

I had missed nearly half his childhood.

I had missed birthdays, school mornings, and the ordinary arguments that parents complain about until they no longer have them.

I had missed the years when his voice changed.

I had missed watching his face become older.

And now I was standing outside a door, afraid that the person waiting on the other side would see a stranger.

Ramirez turned the handle.

The door opened quietly.

There was a table inside.

Two chairs.

A window with the blinds partly lowered.

And a young man sitting with his hands folded together.

He looked up.

I stopped walking.

For a second, I saw nothing familiar.

He was taller than I expected.

His hair was darker than it had appeared in my memories.

His face was longer.

There was a careful, guarded look in his eyes.

Then he shifted in his chair.

Something about that small movement struck me.

I had seen it before.

Matthew used to pull one shoulder slightly forward when he was uncomfortable.

He was doing it now.

My hand went to my mouth.

"Matthew?"

The young man looked at me.

He did not smile.

"Yeah."

One word.

That was all.

But it was his voice.

Not the voice I remembered.

A grown voice.

Still, something in the way he answered reached a part of me I had spent eleven years trying to keep quiet.

I took a step toward him.

Then I stopped.

I did not know whether I was allowed to touch him.

That thought nearly broke me.

I had held this boy when he was small enough to fall asleep against my chest.

Now I was wondering whether a handshake would be too much.

Ramirez moved to the side.

"I'll give you some time."

Matthew glanced at him.

I noticed that.

It was quick.

Barely anything.

But he looked at Ramirez before looking back at me.

As though he needed to know the man was not going far.

I swallowed.

"You don't have to leave."

Ramirez looked at Matthew.

Matthew shook his head slightly.

"It's okay."

Ramirez stepped outside.

The door closed behind him.

And suddenly there were only two of us.

My son.

And me.

I had imagined this moment so many times that the silence felt almost embarrassing.

I wanted to explain everything at once.

I wanted to tell him how long I had searched.

I wanted to tell him that I had never chosen to stop being his father.

I wanted to ask where he had been.

But when I opened my mouth, something much smaller came out.

"Are you all right?"

Matthew looked down at his hands.

"I think so."

I nodded.

It was a ridiculous question.

After eleven years, I had asked whether he was all right.

But I could not think of anything else that would not frighten him.

He pointed toward the empty chair.

"You can sit."

I sat down.

The chair scraped against the floor.

The noise sounded much louder than it should have.

Matthew watched me.

I watched him.

There were things I recognized.

The shape of his eyebrows.

The way his mouth tightened when he was thinking.

A faint resemblance to the little boy standing with the red bucket.

But there were things I did not recognize, too.

An entire life was written into his face.

A life I knew nothing about.

"You're older," I said.

The moment the words left my mouth, I regretted them.

Of course he was older.

He had lived eleven years.

Matthew gave a small, uncertain smile.

"So are you."

I laughed.

It came out badly.

Half laugh.

Half sob.

I lowered my head.

"I'm sorry."

He looked confused.

"For what?"

I could have given him a hundred answers.

For leaving you.

For not finding you.

For believing what everyone told me.

For failing to notice what Robert was doing.

But I did not know which of those apologies belonged to me.

So I told him the one thing I knew was true.

"I'm sorry I wasn't there."

Matthew stared at the table.

He rubbed his thumb against the side of his finger.

I waited.

He did not answer.

That silence hurt.

But I had no right to make him fill it.

After a while, he looked up.

"I don't remember everything."

I felt my chest tighten.

"About the beach?"

He nodded.

"Some things."

"That's okay."

He looked at me carefully.

"Is it?"

I wanted to say yes without hesitation.

Instead, I looked at my hands.

They were shaking.

"I don't know," I admitted.

He leaned back slightly.

For the first time, I saw something in his face that looked less like fear and more like relief.

Maybe he had expected me to pretend I understood everything.

Maybe he had expected me to demand answers.

I did neither.

I could not.

Not yet.

"I remember a bucket," he said.

I looked up.

"A red one?"

He nodded.

I pressed my lips together.

"Yes."

He looked toward the door.

"Ramirez showed me the picture."

I felt tears gathering again.

"I remember that bucket."

Matthew lowered his eyes.

"I didn't know if I really remembered it or if I remembered the photograph."

That was a terrible thing to hear.

Not because he had done anything wrong.

Because eleven years had turned even his own memories into something he could not completely trust.

I leaned forward.

"You don't have to remember anything for me."

He looked at me.

"I mean it," I said.

"I just wanted to see you."

He sat very still.

Then he asked the question I had been afraid of.

"Did you think I was dead?"

I felt my breath catch.

There was no gentle way to answer.

"Yes."

He looked down.

"For eleven years?"

"Yes."

The room seemed to grow smaller.

Matthew rubbed his forehead.

I wanted to reach across the table.

I kept my hands where they were.

"They told me the ocean took you," I said.

He looked up sharply.

"Who told you?"

I opened my mouth.

Then I stopped.

I had repeated that explanation for so long that I had stopped separating what people knew from what they believed.

Everyone had believed it.

I had believed it.

But believing something was not the same as knowing.

"I was told you disappeared near the water," I said.

"That's what I understood happened."

Matthew watched me closely.

"Did you see me go in?"

The question was quiet.

I could hear the air moving through the vent above us.

"No."

I hated that answer.

I hated how small it sounded.

But it was the truth.

"I didn't see it."

Matthew nodded slowly.

I waited for him to speak again.

He did not.

Then I remembered Robert.

The photograph.

The pool.

The man I had trusted.

I looked toward the closed door.

There were questions waiting outside this room.

Questions I was no longer willing to ignore.

But I looked back at Matthew.

He was sitting in front of me.

Alive.

Older.

Afraid.

And I understood that the first thing I needed to do was not solve eleven years of mystery.

It was make sure my son knew he could sit across from me without having to explain himself.

So I stayed in my chair.

I let the silence settle.

And when Matthew finally looked at me again, I did not ask another question.

I simply said his name.

"Matthew."

He raised his eyes.

"I'm here."

He looked at me for a long time.

Then he nodded.

"I know."

Those two words were the first thing he gave me that felt like a beginning.

Not a reunion.

Not forgiveness.

Not an answer.

A beginning.

And after eleven years, I was willing to accept that.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: My Son
