13 – I Thought Leaving Would Be the Hardest Decision, but Learning to Trust My Own Memory After Years of Doubt Was Harder

I used to think that once I made a decision, the uncertainty would disappear.

I was wrong.

Leaving the apartment had been frightening, but at least I knew what I was trying to do.

I wanted the children somewhere safe.

I wanted advice from someone who wasn't connected to Cole.

I wanted to understand what he had been trying to do with my inheritance.

Those things were clear.

Everything else felt uncertain.

I didn't know how long we would stay with Emily.

I didn't know what would happen when Cole realized I wasn't returning.

I didn't know whether the legal process would be straightforward or difficult.

Most of all, I didn't know how to stop questioning myself.

That habit had become automatic.

Whenever I remembered something Cole had said, I wondered whether I had understood him correctly.

Whenever I thought about the bruises on my wrist, I wondered whether I should have acted sooner.

Whenever I looked at the photograph he had sent, I felt embarrassed that I had stayed in the marriage long enough for that moment to happen.

I knew those thoughts weren't helping me.

Still, knowing something and being able to stop doing it were different things.

Emily noticed that I had become quiet again.

She asked whether I was worried about the children.

I told her I was worried about everything.

She didn't try to make the list shorter.

She sat with me while Noah played nearby and Lily slept.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then I admitted something I hadn't wanted to say aloud.

I was afraid that Cole might convince me to return.

Emily looked at me carefully.

I explained that I knew how those conversations usually went.

He would tell me that I had misunderstood.

He would say that I had made a problem out of something simple.

He would remind me of everything we had built together.

And I would begin wondering whether leaving had been an overreaction.

Emily listened until I finished.

Then she asked me what had changed since I made the decision to leave.

I thought about Daniel's call.

I thought about the information concerning the trust.

I thought about the photograph.

I thought about the bruises.

Nothing had become less serious simply because I was frightened.

That answer stayed with me.

I had spent years treating my uncertainty as evidence that I was wrong.

But uncertainty could also mean that I was facing something difficult.

It didn't erase what I knew.

I decided to keep a written record of the information I had received.

I wrote down the things Daniel had told me about the trust office.

I noted that Cole had reportedly been making attempts to obtain authority over certain assets.

I wrote down that he had described me as emotionally unstable after childbirth.

I included the fact that he had submitted paperwork seeking authority he did not have.

I didn't add guesses about his motives.

I didn't write down every fear that crossed my mind.

I wanted a clear record of what I knew and what still needed to be confirmed.

When I finished, I read the page again.

It was difficult to see my marriage described in such plain terms.

But I didn't cross anything out.

For once, I wasn't trying to make the situation sound better than it was.

I put the page away with the other information I wanted to discuss with the attorney.

Then I checked on the children.

Noah was sitting on the floor, moving a toy from one hand to the other.

Lily had fallen asleep again.

I watched them for a moment.

They didn't need me to understand every part of the future.

They needed me to make the next decision carefully.

I could do that.

At least, I could try.

That evening, I put my phone beside the notes I had written.

The photograph was still saved.

The messages were still there.

I didn't open them again.

I didn't need to keep hurting myself by looking at the same image.

Preserving it was enough.

I could let the attorney decide what needed to be examined.

I could stop treating the evidence as something I had to study until I felt certain enough to deserve help.

I was already entitled to ask for help.

I didn't have to earn that right by suffering longer.

That was the first thought I had that day that felt like my own.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: My Grandmother Had Left Me More Than Money, and I Finally Understood Why She
