5 – The First Morning Away From Cole Left Me With Two Sleeping Children and More Questions Than I Could Answer

I woke before the children.

For a moment, I didn't know where I was.

Then I saw the bags beside the bed.

Emily's apartment.

Christmas morning.

I sat up slowly and checked my phone.

There was no message I was ready to answer.

I thought about the photograph Cole had sent.

I thought about the bruises on my wrist.

And I remembered Daniel's voice telling me that Cole had been trying to reach my inheritance.

Eight months.

I kept returning to that number.

It was difficult to accept that something could have been happening for so long without my knowing.

I had trusted Cole to tell me the truth about our finances.

I had trusted him to understand the arrangements my grandmother had made.

I had trusted him when he said I was worrying about nothing.

Now I wondered how many times I had accepted an explanation simply because I wanted the conversation to end.

The children began to stir.

Noah woke first.

He looked around the unfamiliar room and reached for me.

I picked him up.

Lily was still asleep.

I didn't want them to feel frightened by the change, so I kept my voice calm.

I told Noah we were staying with Emily for a little while.

He didn't ask why.

He was too young to understand.

That made the whole situation feel worse.

They had no idea what had happened between their parents.

They only knew that their mother was holding them somewhere different.

Emily came into the room a few minutes later.

She had changed clothes.

Her eyes went straight to my wrist.

I pulled my sleeve down without thinking.

She noticed.

She didn't say anything about it.

Instead, she asked whether I wanted something to eat.

I told her I wasn't hungry.

She brought me water anyway.

I drank some.

Then I looked at my phone again.

I knew I needed to preserve the messages and photographs.

Daniel had made that clear.

I checked that the image Cole had sent was still saved.

I made sure the conversation remained on my phone.

I didn't want to lose anything by accident.

Emily watched me.

She asked whether I had spoken to anyone about what happened.

I told her about Daniel.

I explained that he had said my grandmother's trust included an emergency provision.

I told her that Cole had been attempting to gain authority over some of my assets.

I tried to explain the claims he had made about my emotional state after childbirth.

As I spoke, I heard how strange it sounded.

My husband had been telling people that I could not manage my own decisions.

I had been telling myself that he was simply difficult to live with.

Those were not the same thing.

Emily sat beside me.

She didn't interrupt.

When I finished, she asked what Daniel had advised.

I told her that he wanted me to remain somewhere safe, avoid confronting Cole, and wait for him to arrange independent legal help.

Emily nodded.

She said I didn't need to decide everything that morning.

I knew she was right.

But I wanted answers.

I wanted to know what Cole had submitted.

I wanted to know whether anyone had believed him.

I wanted to know why my grandmother had thought it necessary to prepare for this kind of situation.

There was no way to get those answers immediately.

Daniel had said he would contact the attorney when the offices opened.

Until then, I had to wait.

Waiting was harder than I expected.

I had spent the night making decisions.

Now there was nothing to do except care for the children and keep the information I had.

I looked at the bags near the bed.

They contained only what we had managed to bring.

Diapers.

Medicine.

A few clothes.

The things I had grabbed because I couldn't imagine leaving the children without them.

I hadn't packed for a permanent move.

I hadn't known whether we would be away for one night or much longer.

That uncertainty stayed with me.

I was afraid of returning.

I was afraid of what Cole might say.

I was also afraid of the practical things I had not considered.

The apartment.

The children's belongings.

The inheritance.

The legal arrangements.

I had spent years believing that Cole would handle those matters with me.

Now I had to learn what he had done without my knowledge.

I checked the time.

The morning was moving forward.

I wondered whether Daniel had already contacted the lawyer.

I didn't want to call him repeatedly.

He had promised to help.

I needed to trust that promise.

That was difficult, too.

I had trusted the wrong person for too long.

But Daniel had given me information I could verify.

He had explained what my grandmother's arrangements allowed.

He had not told me to return to Cole.

He had not suggested that I was overreacting.

He had treated the situation as something that deserved attention.

That mattered.

I put the phone down.

Then Noah reached for it.

I moved it out of his hands and held him close.

I didn't want him touching the screen.

The photograph was still there.

So were the messages.

I would keep them.

I would not erase them because I was ashamed of what they showed.

For years, I had tried to protect Cole from the consequences of his own behavior.

I had done it because I wanted to believe we could repair the marriage.

I had done it because I didn't want people to think badly of him.

I had done it because I was afraid of what would happen if I stopped.

That morning, I finally admitted something to myself.

I couldn't protect him by making myself less credible.

I couldn't keep our family together by pretending the truth wasn't happening.

And I couldn't make a safe home for the children if I kept ignoring the reasons I had left.

Emily asked whether I wanted to call Daniel.

I told her I would wait a little longer.

I wanted to give him time to speak with the attorney.

I wanted to understand what the next step would be.

The children needed breakfast.

They needed clean clothes.

They needed a mother who could pay attention to them.

So I put the phone away.

I helped Emily prepare something simple for them.

For a little while, I focused on the ordinary work of caring for Noah and Lily.

It was the only part of my life that felt familiar.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: Daniel’s Next Conversation Forced Me to Look at the Trust Papers as
