I want you to help me.”

He didn't respond immediately.

When he spoke again, his voice was more serious.

He told me that my grandmother had anticipated the possibility that I might someday need protection from someone close to me.

The emergency provision was not something she had included casually.

She had made arrangements so that I could receive financial support and independent legal help if my circumstances became dangerous.

I sat very still.

My grandmother had been dead for four years.

I had spent those years thinking of her inheritance as something she had left me for the future.

I hadn't understood that she had also left me a way out if the future became something I couldn't manage alone.

Daniel said there was another issue I needed to understand before we proceeded.

My heart began to race.

He explained that Cole had been contacting the trust office for months.

Not once.

Repeatedly.

He had been attempting to gain access to information and authority connected to my inheritance.

I stared at the phone.

I thought I had misunderstood him.

Cole had always said the trust was beyond his reach.

He had told me there was nothing he could do with it.

According to Daniel, that was true in one sense.

Cole did not have the authority he wanted.

But he had been trying to obtain it anyway.

I felt as if the floor beneath my understanding of the past had shifted.

Eight months.

That was how long the attempts had been going on.

Eight months during which Cole had watched me worry about our marriage while pursuing something that belonged to me.

I asked Daniel why Cole would have done that.

He explained that Cole had presented concerns about my ability to manage financial decisions.

He had claimed that I was emotionally unstable after the birth of the children.

He had suggested that I was no longer capable of handling my own affairs.

I couldn't speak.

The words sounded familiar in a way that made me feel sick.

Cole had said similar things to me privately.

He had questioned my judgment.

He had told me I was imagining problems.

When I challenged him, he suggested I needed help.

I had thought those comments were meant to end arguments.

Now I understood that they might have served another purpose.

He had been telling a version of my life to other people.

A version in which I was unreliable.

A version in which he could present himself as the person who knew what was best for me.

I gripped the phone harder.

Daniel told me that Cole had even submitted paperwork seeking authority over certain assets.

He hadn't succeeded.

But the attempt had been serious enough to make the trust office take notice.

I thought about all the times I had apologized for questioning him.

I remembered how often he had told me that I was too emotional to understand what was happening.

I had believed that I was failing to be a good wife.

I hadn't considered that he might be trying to make me look incapable of making decisions for myself.

The realization hurt in a different way from the photograph.

The photograph had shown me what Cole was willing to do to our marriage.

The information from Daniel showed me that the problem reached beyond our marriage.

I asked whether my grandmother had known this might happen.

Daniel said she had considered the possibility that someone might use a marriage to gain control over another person's property or decisions.

That was why the emergency provision existed.

If I needed protection, the trust could release funds for that purpose.

It could also help arrange independent legal representation so I wouldn't have to rely on Cole or his advice.

I lowered my head.

For years, I had thought of my grandmother's arrangements as something distant and difficult to understand.

Now I was grateful for every careful decision she had made.

I wished I could tell her that.

I wished I could apologize for dismissing her concerns.

Instead, I sat in the quiet apartment and listened to Daniel explain what we could do next.

He told me that the first priority was the children.

I needed to take Noah and Lily somewhere safe.

I was not to confront Cole about what I had learned.

I needed to preserve every message and photograph that might matter later.

Daniel would contact a family law attorney as soon as morning came.

I listened carefully.

For once, I didn't interrupt to explain why Cole might have a reason for doing what he had done.

I didn't defend him.

I didn't make excuses.

I simply listened.

When Daniel finished, I looked toward the nursery.

Noah and Lily were still asleep.

I could hear one of them moving softly in the next room.

I knew I couldn't wait for the morning to decide what to do.

I needed help now.

I ended the call only after confirming that Daniel understood how urgent the situation felt.

Then I searched for my younger sister's number.

Emily had always been someone I could call when I needed practical help.

We weren't the sort of sisters who discussed every private detail of our lives.

Sometimes we went too long without talking.

But I knew she would answer if I truly needed her.

At 1:18 a.m., I called.

She picked up with a sleepy voice.

“Lauren? What's wrong?”

I looked at the nursery door.

I wanted to tell her everything.

I wanted to explain the photograph, the bruises, the trust, and the things Daniel had just revealed.

There wasn't time.

I told her that I wasn't okay, but that I intended to make things better.

Then I asked if she could come and get me and the children.

Emily didn't demand an explanation.

She didn't tell me to calm down.

She didn't ask whether I had tried talking to Cole.

She said she was on her way.

I put the phone down and began preparing to leave.

For the first time that night, I had made a decision that did not depend on Cole agreeing with me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: My Sister Arrived Before Two in the Morning, and the Look on Her Face Told Me I Could No Longer Pretend Nothing Was Wrong

Daniel answered after several rings.
