19 – I Had Found the Son I Thought the Sea Had Taken, and I Finally Understood That Love Could Not Tell Me What the Evidence Had Yet to Reveal

I woke early the next morning.

For a moment, I forgot why I felt different.

Then I remembered the dinner with Matthew.

We had spoken about ordinary things.

We had disagreed about what to order.

We had talked about Robert without arguing.

Nothing dramatic had happened.

That was why it mattered.

For years, my memories of Matthew had been tied to one terrible afternoon.

Now I was collecting new memories that did not begin or end at the beach.

I wanted more of them.

I wanted to know what made him laugh.

I wanted to know what he thought about when he was alone.

I wanted to learn what kind of life he wanted.

I knew I could not ask all those questions at once.

I had to let him decide how much of himself he wanted to share.

I made coffee and sat at the kitchen table.

The red bucket stood on the shelf.

The photograph was in the drawer.

I had stopped arranging my days around those objects, but I still noticed them.

They reminded me of what I had lost and what had returned.

They also reminded me that I could not turn a memory into proof.

That afternoon, Ramirez asked to speak with me again.

I went to the building.

She told me that she was continuing to examine the original account of the disappearance.

I asked whether there was anything I needed to do.

She said that I should continue sharing any information I remembered, but I should avoid trying to fill gaps with assumptions.

I told her I understood.

I asked whether she had spoken to Robert.

She did not give me details about every conversation.

I could tell that she was being careful.

I had to respect that.

I asked whether she believed the case could be resolved.

She said that she could not promise a particular outcome.

I sat quietly.

There had been a time when that answer would have made me feel abandoned.

I would have wondered why nobody could give me the certainty I needed.

Now I understood that uncertainty was not the same as indifference.

Ramirez was not asking me to forget Matthew.

She was refusing to tell me a story that the available information did not yet support.

I thanked her.

Before I left, I asked whether I could continue meeting with Matthew.

She told me that he remained willing to see me.

I felt relief.

I had been so focused on the investigation that I had begun to fear I might lose the relationship we were slowly building.

I did not want that.

The investigation could take time.

My son and I were already living in the present.

When I returned home, I called Matthew.

We spoke briefly.

He told me that he was doing all right.

I asked whether he wanted to meet that weekend.

He said yes.

We made plans.

After the call, I sat quietly with the telephone in my hand.

I thought about the first time Ramirez had contacted me.

I had been afraid to answer because I expected another conversation about a loss that could never be repaired.

I had not imagined that the call would lead me to a room where my seventeen-year-old son was waiting.

I had not imagined that I would have to learn his face again.

I had not imagined that I would need to ask permission before hugging him.

Those things had become part of my life now.

I was grateful for them, even when they hurt.

The weekend meeting took place in a quiet public place.

Matthew arrived carrying a small bag.

He sat down and placed it beside his chair.

I asked whether he had brought something he needed.

He said he had brought the photograph.

He took it out and placed it on the table.

I looked at him.

"Do you want to keep it after all?"

He shook his head.

"I wanted to look at it again."

I nodded.

He studied the picture.

I waited.

After a while, he said that it was strange to see himself as a little boy.

I told him that I understood.

He asked whether I still remembered what he had been like.

I told him about the red bucket and the stuffed elephant.

I described the way he used to ask questions about everything.

I told him that he could be stubborn when he believed he was right.

Matthew looked at me.

"Was I?"

I smiled.

"Very."

He laughed.

The sound was brief but genuine.

I felt the memory of his childhood rise inside me, but I did not confuse it with the young man sitting across from me.

He was allowed to be different from the child I remembered.

He was allowed to have become someone I did not yet know.

We talked for a long time.

At one point, he asked whether I regretted trusting Robert.

I looked down at the photograph.

"Yes."

He waited.

"I regret that I never questioned him more carefully after you disappeared."

I explained that I had been trying to survive the loss.

I had wanted to believe that the people around me were telling the truth.

I had needed something stable to hold on to.

But I had also made a mistake by allowing my need for comfort to settle questions that remained unanswered.

Matthew listened.

I told him that I could not change what I had done.

I could only be honest about it now.

He looked at the photograph again.

Then he returned it to the envelope.

I did not ask him whether he forgave me.

I did not want forgiveness to become another thing he felt expected to provide.

We sat together until it was time to leave.

Outside, Matthew asked whether I thought we would ever feel like a normal family.

I considered the question.

"I don't know what normal means for us anymore."

He looked at me.

"But I want us to have a chance to find out."

He nodded.

We said goodbye.

I watched him leave, then returned to my car.

I sat there for several minutes.

I had spent eleven years believing that the ocean had taken my son.

Now I knew that he was alive.

I knew that he was growing into a person I wanted to understand.

I knew that the years between us could not be recovered.

And I knew that the questions about Robert remained unanswered.

I could not let those questions become the only thing we shared.

I had found my son.

I needed to keep being his father.

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: The Ocean Had Never Given Me an Answer, but My Son’s Return Taught Me
