5 – I Wanted to Hold My Son, but the Photograph Between Us Reminded Me That Eleven Missing Years Could Not Be Returned

I followed Ramirez into the corridor.

Matthew walked a few steps ahead of us.

I kept looking at him.

I tried not to make it obvious, but I couldn't help myself.

He was real.

He was seventeen years old, with dark hair and a face I was slowly learning to recognize again.

For eleven years, I had imagined him as a little boy.

Now I had to remind myself that he had grown up.

He stopped near a window.

I stopped too.

Neither of us knew what to say.

Ramirez gave us a little space before asking whether we wanted somewhere quiet to sit.

Matthew nodded.

I nodded as well.

We entered a small waiting room with two chairs, a low table, and a box of tissues beside a stack of papers.

I hated the tissues.

They made the room feel prepared for a kind of sadness that nobody could prevent.

I sat down.

Matthew chose the chair across from me.

The photograph was still in my hand.

I had carried it everywhere that morning, and I suddenly felt foolish for bringing it.

He was sitting right there.

I didn't need a picture to prove he existed.

But I wasn't ready to put it away.

It was the only version of him I had known for eleven years.

Ramirez asked whether we wanted some water.

Matthew said yes.

I declined.

She returned with a paper cup and placed it beside him.

He thanked her quietly.

That ordinary exchange nearly broke me.

I had missed eleven years of ordinary things.

I had missed the sound of his voice asking for water.

I had missed the way he thanked people.

I had missed every small habit that a father usually learns without noticing.

Matthew took a drink.

Then he looked at me.

"Did you really keep looking?"

I felt the question settle in my chest.

"Yes."

He turned the cup between his hands.

"For how long?"

I could have given him a number.

I could have told him that I had never stopped thinking about him, even when I stopped making phone calls and stopped asking officials whether anything new had happened.

But I knew that wasn't quite what he was asking.

He wanted to know whether I had given up.

I looked at him.

"I never stopped wanting to know what happened to you."

He studied my face.

I wished I could tell what he was thinking.

After a moment, he looked away.

I wanted to reach across the table, but I kept my hands in my lap.

I had spent years imagining what I would do if I ever saw him again.

None of those imagined moments had included this uncertainty.

I had assumed that being reunited would make everything clear.

Instead, I had discovered a new set of questions.

I didn't know what Matthew remembered.

I didn't know what he had been told about me.

I didn't know whether the eleven years between us had made him afraid of me.

I could not demand that he trust me simply because I was his father.

Trust was something I had once given Robert without thinking.

I understood now that it could not be required from anyone.

Ramirez sat near the door.

She explained that she would speak with us again when we were ready.

I asked her whether Matthew could leave with me.

She answered carefully.

There were things that needed to be clarified before any decisions were made.

I felt my shoulders tighten.

I wanted to take my son home.

I wanted to put him in a car and drive away from that building.

I wanted to make up for eleven years in one afternoon.

But wanting something did not make it possible.

Matthew looked at me.

"I don't know what happens now."

His voice was quiet.

"Neither do I."

I thought that honesty was better than making promises I couldn't keep.

He seemed to accept the answer.

For a little while, we sat without speaking.

Then I told him about the photograph again.

I explained that it had been taken at the children's club, before he disappeared.

I told him that the man behind him was Robert.

Matthew looked at the picture.

His fingers tightened around the paper cup.

I noticed.

I didn't ask him why.

I had learned enough that morning to understand how easily a question could become a demand.

Instead, I waited.

After a moment, he asked whether I still knew Robert.

The question surprised me.

"Yes," I said. "I knew him for a long time."

Matthew looked down.

I wanted to ask what he knew about Robert.

I wanted to ask whether he remembered that afternoon.

But I couldn't bring myself to do it.

I was afraid of the answer.

I was also afraid that I might misunderstand him.

So I told him the truth about my own memory.

"After you disappeared, I kept thinking about where Robert had been standing."

Matthew looked at me again.

I explained that I had seen him near the pool while other people were searching.

At the time, I thought he was in shock.

I had never considered what else that moment might mean.

Matthew said nothing.

I wondered whether he had heard that story before.

I wondered whether it matched anything he remembered.

He set down the paper cup.

"Did he tell you what happened?"

"He told me that you had disappeared during the confusion."

"And you believed him?"

The question hurt because I knew the answer.

"Yes."

I looked at the photograph.

"I wanted to believe him."

Matthew watched me for a long time.

I couldn't tell whether he was angry.

If he was, he had every reason to be.

I had trusted Robert.

I had allowed his explanation to become part of the story I told myself about my son's disappearance.

I had spent years accepting that the sea was responsible.

Now I had to face the possibility that my trust had kept me from asking the right questions.

Matthew stood and walked to the window.

I stayed in my chair.

He looked outside for a while.

I didn't know whether he wanted me to follow him.

I didn't know whether he wanted me to leave.

For once, I resisted the urge to fill the silence.

A few minutes later, Ramirez returned.

She told us that she wanted to discuss the next steps with me.

Matthew agreed to wait.

Before I left the room, I looked at him.

"I'll come back."

He nodded.

I hoped he understood that I meant it.

In the corridor, Ramirez explained that the information surrounding Matthew's return was still being examined.

I asked what she could tell me about the years he had been missing.

She said she could not answer every question yet.

I felt the old frustration rise again.

Then I remembered Matthew's face when he asked whether I had kept looking.

I could wait for information.

I could not make my son feel that he was being questioned until he provided an explanation for his own absence.

I asked Ramirez whether she believed Robert had been involved.

She said she wanted to establish what could be supported by the available information.

It was a careful answer.

I didn't like it.

But I understood why she gave it.

We returned to the waiting room.

Matthew was still by the window.

He turned when we entered.

I sat down across from him again.

The photograph lay on the table between us.

For the first time that day, I considered putting it away.

I didn't.

Not yet.

I needed it to remember the child I had lost.

I needed Matthew to know that I had never forgotten him.

And I needed to understand why the man standing behind him in that picture had become the person I was most afraid to face.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: I Had Spent Years Defending Robert to Myself, Until
