18 – The Money Was Still on the Statements, the Bruise Was Still on My Face, and I Could Not Pretend Either One Meant Nothing

I looked at David's bank statements again.

The paper hadn't changed.

The numbers were still there.

And somehow, I kept hoping they would look different.

I wanted the first page to be a mistake.

I wanted the transfers to have an explanation that made everything less painful.

I wanted Jason to say something that would restore the trust I had carried into that room.

But wanting wasn't the same as knowing.

I had spent too many years confusing the two.

I wanted my son to be honest.

So I assumed he was.

I wanted his apologies to mean lasting change.

So I accepted them.

I wanted my financial help to improve his situation.

So I kept giving.

And when I wanted the arguments to end, I sometimes gave in simply because it seemed easier.

Now I was staring at what I hadn't understood.

David had sent money regularly.

Sometimes more than once in a month.

And Jason had told him I wasn't providing support.

Nearly a year.

I couldn't get past that part.

I had been working.

I had been giving him money.

I had been worrying about whether I could afford to help again.

And his father had been told I stopped.

I looked toward David.

He seemed as troubled as I was.

I wondered whether he was thinking about all the transfers he had made.

Whether he remembered the conversations that led to them.

Whether he had felt guilty when Jason said I wasn't helping.

I couldn't know.

I hadn't been part of those discussions.

That was the problem.

Each of us knew only what Jason chose to tell us.

And the accounts didn't match.

I looked down at the first two amounts.

Five hundred dollars.

Seven hundred dollars.

They weren't small sums to me.

I knew how much work went into earning money.

I knew what it meant to hand over something I could have used for myself.

But the amount wasn't the only issue anymore.

It was the secrecy.

The separation between what David believed and what I knew.

I looked at Jason.

I wanted him to understand how that affected both of us.

Not because parents were entitled to every private thought their adult child had.

But because he had been asking us for money.

When someone asks for financial help, honesty matters.

Especially when the same person is asking both parents while giving them conflicting information.

I wondered whether Jason saw the problem that way.

I didn't know.

He hadn't offered an explanation that resolved it.

I thought about asking again.

Then I remembered how often I had repeated questions in the past.

I would ask something important.

Jason would become upset.

I would try another way of saying it.

Then another.

Eventually, I would be too tired to continue.

And the issue would remain unresolved.

I didn't want to repeat that pattern.

The facts were on the table.

I didn't need to keep turning them into questions until Jason gave me an answer I wanted.

I looked toward Rebecca.

Her leather folder reminded me that the money wasn't the only reason we were there.

I had asked for help because my son hit me.

The injury was still visible.

I touched my cheek.

I could feel the swelling.

That was one kind of evidence.

The bank statements were another.

Together, they showed how much I needed to reconsider.

I had believed I understood Jason's financial situation.

I hadn't.

I had believed my refusal would lead to an ordinary disagreement.

It hadn't.

I had believed a familiar apology could settle the problem.

Now I wasn't willing to accept that.

I looked at the plate of pancakes.

I remembered the moment I set it down.

Jason had been standing in the doorway.

His smile had disappeared.

He was looking at David.

Then Rebecca.

Then Officer Brooks.

He wanted to know what was happening.

I had told him breakfast was ready.

I had tried to sound calm.

Part of me still wondered whether that had been foolish.

Why had I made food for someone who hurt me?

Why had I greeted him so gently?

Then I reminded myself that calmness wasn't surrender.

I hadn't made breakfast because I intended to forgive everything.

I had made it because I wanted to speak without another confrontation becoming violent.

I had also arranged for help.

That was what mattered.

I wasn't alone.

I hadn't placed myself in the same position as the previous night.

I had changed the circumstances.

I had told David.

I had involved Rebecca.

I had asked Officer Brooks for assistance.

Those were deliberate choices.

I needed to give myself credit for them.

I looked at David.

He had flown from Los Angeles on the earliest flight.

He hadn't been present when Jason struck me.

Jason had pointed that out.

But David had looked at my face.

He had heard my account.

And he had taken the situation seriously enough to come.

I was grateful.

I didn't say it aloud at that moment.

The room already held more emotion than I knew how to express.

But I felt it.

I had spent so long carrying Jason's problems privately that having another parent beside me was unfamiliar.

I didn't have to explain everything alone.

I didn't have to absorb every reaction.

And I didn't have to keep pretending the situation belonged only to me.

I thought about the previous night again.

Eight hours of work.

Coming home tired.

Jason asking for money.

My refusal.

The blow.

I couldn't remember those facts without feeling sad.

Not only because I had been hurt.

Because I knew I had reached a point where my son treated a refusal as something he could answer with physical force.

I wondered what would have happened if I had given him money.

The thought came automatically.

Perhaps the argument wouldn't have happened.

Perhaps breakfast would have been ordinary.

Perhaps David would still be in Los Angeles.

Perhaps there would be no lawyer or officer in my dining room.

Then I stopped.

That was the same kind of thinking that had kept me trapped.

If I had given him what he wanted, perhaps he wouldn't have hurt me.

But that didn't make the demand reasonable.

It didn't make the threat acceptable.

And it didn't make me responsible for his choice to strike me.

I needed to remember that.

I had been allowed to say no.

Even if he was disappointed.

Even if he was angry.

Even if he had been receiving money from nobody else.

My refusal was still allowed.

The fact that David had also been helping him made the dishonesty more painful.

But it wasn't necessary to prove that my boundary mattered.

I looked toward Officer Brooks.

His presence reminded me that safety came before explanations.

I wanted to understand the money.

I wanted Jason to admit the lie.

I wanted David and me to know the full picture.

But I couldn't let those questions distract from the immediate reason I had asked for help.

I needed a safe separation.

That request had not changed.

I looked at Jason.

He was still my son.

The same person I wanted to help.

The same person I wanted to understand.

But I was no longer willing to place his comfort above my safety.

I had repeated that thought to myself several times throughout the morning.

I needed the repetition.

Years of habit didn't disappear because I understood them once.

I could recognize a pattern and still feel pulled toward it.

I could know I had a right to refuse and still feel guilty.

I could know Jason was responsible for his actions and still want to defend him.

Those feelings were real.

But they didn't have to control my decisions.

I looked at the bank statements again.

This time, I didn't search for a different explanation.

I simply read what was there.

The transfers had happened.

David had sent money.

Jason had received it.

And I had been unaware of the extent of that support.

I thought about the four thousand dollars I had given him.

I couldn't change those payments.

I couldn't reclaim the hours I had spent worrying.

I couldn't undo the conversations where I felt pressured to help.

But I could stop repeating them without understanding what was happening.

I looked at the bruise on my cheek reflected in the window.

That mark would fade eventually.

The records would remain.

And my memory of the morning would remain too.

I didn't want to forget why I had asked for help.

I didn't want time to make me question whether the situation had been serious.

I didn't want a calmer day to convince me that the previous night could be dismissed.

I had lived through it.

I knew what happened.

And for once, I was going to trust my own understanding.

I looked toward Jason.

I still wanted an honest explanation.

But I wasn't going to make my safety depend on receiving one.

That was the difference.

The truth was already clear enough for me to keep the decision I had made.

I had asked for help.

And I wasn't taking that request back.

<a
