17 – I Thought the Hardest Part Was Confronting My Son, but the Truth Was That I Still Wanted to Protect Him

I looked at Jason and felt the same old ache.

He was my son.

Twenty-three years old.

Standing in the dining room where I had prepared breakfast for him.

And I still wanted to make the morning easier.

That was the part I found hardest to admit.

Even after everything.

Even after the previous night.

Even after David showed me the bank statements.

I wanted to comfort the person who had hurt me.

I watched Jason's face.

I wondered whether he felt ashamed.

I wondered whether he was frightened by the presence of Officer Brooks.

I wondered what he thought Rebecca Collins might say next.

Then I stopped myself.

I had been doing that for years.

Trying to guess what Jason felt.

Trying to understand what he needed.

Trying to arrange my own words so he wouldn't become upset.

It was exhausting.

And I was tired.

I looked at the pancakes.

They had been sitting there since he entered.

I had made them because I wanted something familiar on the table.

Something ordinary.

Something that said I was still his mother.

At the time, I thought that mattered.

Now I understood that Jason already knew I was his mother.

He had never doubted my willingness to care for him.

What he needed to understand was that being his mother didn't mean I would accept being hurt.

I moved my hand away from the plate.

The food could stay where it was.

I wasn't going to use breakfast to rescue everyone from an uncomfortable conversation.

David sat beside the printed records.

I could still see the amounts.

Five hundred dollars.

Seven hundred dollars.

I remembered my surprise when he showed them to me.

I had known Jason needed money.

I had known he borrowed from me.

More than four thousand dollars.

That number was still difficult to say.

But I hadn't known David was helping him regularly.

Sometimes twice a month.

And I certainly hadn't known Jason told his father I stopped supporting him almost a year earlier.

That was the part I couldn't stop thinking about.

I looked at Jason.

He knew what he had told David.

He knew what he had taken from me.

He knew those two things didn't agree.

Yet I was still searching for an explanation that would make the situation feel less painful.

I didn't like recognizing that.

I had always believed trust was one of the most important things between a parent and a child.

I wanted Jason to trust me.

I wanted him to feel he could come to me when he was struggling.

I wanted to be someone who listened.

Somewhere along the way, I had stopped asking whether I could trust what he told me.

I had treated questioning him as a kind of betrayal.

But the bank statements were teaching me something different.

Trust couldn't mean refusing to notice contradictions.

It couldn't mean giving money without understanding what was happening.

And it couldn't mean staying silent when someone became violent.

I looked toward Rebecca.

Her leather folder was still open.

She had been quiet while David and I struggled with the financial discovery.

I appreciated that.

She wasn't there to decide whether I loved Jason enough.

She was there because I needed assistance dealing with abuse inside my family.

The word still made me uncomfortable.

Abuse.

I wished there were another word.

Something smaller.

Something easier.

But I knew what happened.

Jason demanded money.

I refused.

He struck me.

The simplicity of it was painful.

I had spent years finding complicated ways to explain his anger.

Stress.

Disappointment.

Pressure.

A difficult day.

Those things might explain why someone felt upset.

They didn't excuse what he had done.

I touched my cheek lightly.

The swelling hadn't disappeared.

I wondered how many times I had touched it that morning.

I hadn't counted.

Every time my fingers moved toward my face, I remembered why everyone was there.

David had flown from Los Angeles.

Rebecca had brought her folder.

Officer Brooks stood near the window.

None of that would have happened if I had continued pretending everything was fine.

That thought made me sad.

I had wanted to protect Jason from consequences.

But keeping the problem hidden hadn't protected either of us.

It had simply allowed the pattern to continue.

I looked toward Officer Brooks.

He remained quiet.

His presence was strange in our dining room.

I had never imagined needing an officer nearby while speaking to my own child.

Yet I was grateful he was there.

Not because I wanted Jason punished.

Because I didn't want to face another frightening confrontation alone.

There was a difference.

I needed to keep remembering that.

Jason had looked shocked when he learned I asked for assistance.

He had seemed almost wounded by the decision.

For a moment, I had felt guilty.

I wondered whether involving an officer was too much.

I wondered whether David and I could have handled everything privately.

Then I remembered the previous night.

I had tried handling Jason's anger myself.

I had refused him money.

And he had hit me.

I couldn't ignore that simply because the alternative was uncomfortable.

I looked down at my hands.

They were resting on the table.

I had stopped hiding them.

Earlier, I worried Jason would notice they were shaking.

Now I no longer cared whether he saw that I was frightened.

Perhaps he needed to understand that.

Perhaps he needed to recognize that his behavior had changed the way I felt around him.

But even that wasn't something I could control.

I couldn't force him to see my fear.

I couldn't make him understand the bruise.

I couldn't make him regret the lie about money.

Those things belonged to him.

My responsibility was different.

I needed to protect myself.

I needed to speak honestly.

And I needed to stop treating his disappointment as a reason to abandon my decisions.

I looked at David.

He had admitted he should have paid closer attention.

I remembered his words clearly.

They mattered because I had been blaming myself for so much.

I had believed that if I were a better mother, perhaps Jason wouldn't become so angry.

If I explained things differently, perhaps he would accept a refusal.

If I gave him enough support, perhaps he wouldn't feel desperate.

But David's admission reminded me that neither parent had understood the entire situation.

We had both been trying to help.

We had both been given incomplete information.

And neither of us could make Jason behave responsibly simply by giving him money.

I looked at the statements again.

The numbers seemed smaller than the damage they represented.

Five hundred dollars.

Seven hundred dollars.

Amounts written in ordinary print.

But behind them was the realization that Jason had been asking both parents for help while keeping our understanding separate.

I couldn't prove every reason behind his choices.

I wasn't going to invent them.

The dishonesty was serious enough without guessing.

I thought about the four thousand dollars I had given him.

I tried not to think of it as wasted.

I had given it because I cared.

Because I wanted him to be all right.

Because I believed I was helping.

Those motives were real.

But I also had to admit that I had sometimes given money because I didn't want the argument that might follow a refusal.

That was harder to accept.

It meant my decisions hadn't always been free from fear.

I had known Jason could become angry.

I had learned to anticipate it.

I had adjusted my behavior accordingly.

And the previous night showed me that my fear wasn't imaginary.

I looked at my son.

I wished he could understand how much that hurt.

A mother shouldn't have to calculate whether saying no will make her child violent.

I knew that.

I had always known it.

But I hadn't applied the same standard to my own life.

I thought about what I would say if another woman told me her adult son had hit her for refusing money.

I wouldn't tell her to be more patient.

I wouldn't ask her whether he was stressed.

I wouldn't suggest she make him breakfast and hope the problem disappeared.

I would want her to be safe.

The thought stayed with me.

Why had I struggled to want the same thing for myself?

I didn't have a good answer.

Only years of habit.

Years of putting Jason first.

Years of believing that a mother's job was to absorb the difficult parts of her child's life.

I had confused endurance with love.

And now I was paying attention to the difference.

I looked at the empty chair.

I had invited him to sit there.

He hadn't.

Earlier, I might have asked again.

I might have tried to make him feel less uncomfortable.

I might have moved the papers away and suggested we eat before continuing.

That would have been familiar.

A delay.

A gentler atmosphere.

Another chance for the conversation to lose its purpose.

I didn't do that.

The chair remained empty.

The papers remained visible.

And I remained seated.

I looked toward Rebecca again.

I wanted to ask her whether I was doing the right thing.

I wanted reassurance that I hadn't gone too far.

But I already knew why I asked for help.

I had been hurt.

I felt unsafe.

And I needed assistance arranging a separation that would protect me.

I didn't need to turn that decision into another question Jason could answer for me.

I took a slow breath.

My cheek still ached.

The room remained quiet.

And I felt the familiar temptation to make everything better.

But I didn't reach for the pancakes.

I didn't soften what happened.

I didn't apologize for the people I had invited.

For once, I allowed Jason to face the discomfort of his own actions without trying to carry it for him.

That was my decision.

Not an angry one.

Not a cruel one.

Just a decision I should have made long before the previous night.

I could continue loving my son.

But I was no longer willing to protect him from the truth at the cost of protecting myself.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: The Money Was Still on the Statements, the Bruise Was
