6 – I Had Spent Years Trying to Keep My Son Comfortable, and Now I Was Learning What That Habit Had Cost Me

I looked at my hands.

They were resting in my lap.

I had placed them there when Jason first entered the room because I didn't want him to notice they were shaking.

Now they were still.

That surprised me.

I didn't feel calm.

Not completely.

But I no longer felt the same urgent need to fix everyone's mood.

Jason was uncomfortable.

David was disappointed.

I was hurt.

And for once, I wasn't rushing to make those feelings disappear.

I thought about how many times I had done exactly that.

Jason would become angry.

I would try to explain.

He would become more upset.

I would look for some way to end the argument.

Sometimes that meant giving him what he wanted.

Sometimes it meant accepting his apology before I was ready.

Sometimes it meant staying quiet.

I had called it patience.

That morning, I wasn't so sure.

Patience was supposed to help someone grow.

What I had been doing often allowed the same problem to return.

I looked toward the pancakes.

I had always known how to make breakfast for my son.

It was simple.

A plate.

A place at the table.

Something warm to eat.

Those small acts had never felt complicated.

But they had become tangled with something much harder.

I had started treating care as though it required agreement.

If Jason needed money, I was supposed to provide it.

If he became angry, I was supposed to understand.

If he apologized, I was supposed to forgive.

And if I felt hurt afterward, I was supposed to keep that to myself.

I didn't remember anyone formally giving me those rules.

They had developed slowly.

One conversation at a time.

One demand at a time.

One decision to avoid an argument.

By the night before, I had become so accustomed to the pattern that refusing money felt like a major confrontation.

It shouldn't have.

I was allowed to say no.

That was such a simple thought.

Yet I had struggled to live by it.

I looked at Jason.

He seemed older than the boy I kept remembering.

Twenty-three years old.

An adult.

Someone responsible for how he treated other people.

I had known his age, of course.

I had repeated it to myself plenty of times.

But emotionally, I had continued responding to him as though every difficulty he faced required me to step in.

I had confused helping him with protecting him from frustration.

The difference hadn't seemed important until I was sitting there with a swollen cheek.

I shifted slightly in my chair.

The movement drew my attention back to the room.

David was still nearby.

Rebecca sat with her leather folder.

Officer Brooks remained by the window.

Jason stood across from us.

Four other people.

Each there because of something I had spent too long trying to manage alone.

I found that embarrassing.

I wished I didn't.

There was a part of me that still wanted to apologize to everyone for involving them.

As though asking for help had created the problem.

As though the problem hadn't existed until I spoke about it.

I remembered how Jason had reacted when he realized David knew.

He had seemed almost offended.

Then he learned Rebecca was an attorney.

His disbelief had grown.

When Officer Brooks introduced himself, Jason had looked genuinely shaken.

I had watched him move from anger to concern.

Then to apology.

And back to anger when David described what happened.

The changes had come so quickly.

A few days earlier, I might have followed every shift.

If Jason softened his voice, I would soften mine.

If he became angry, I would become careful.

If he sounded hurt, I would feel guilty.

I had been adjusting myself around his emotions for so long that I barely noticed doing it.

Now I noticed.

And I didn't like what I saw.

I glanced at David.

He had come from Los Angeles after hearing what happened.

He hadn't witnessed the blow.

Jason had made that point.

But David had looked at my cheek.

He had heard my account.

He had taken the situation seriously.

And he had admitted he should have been paying closer attention.

That admission stayed with me.

I knew how easy it would have been for him to blame only Jason.

Or blame me for allowing the situation to continue.

Instead, he had acknowledged his own failure to see what was happening.

It didn't erase anything.

It didn't give either of us the power to change the previous night.

But it meant I wasn't the only parent recognizing that something had gone badly wrong.

I wondered whether David felt the same shame I did.

I didn't ask.

I couldn't know.

I only knew that the printed records had brought a second problem into the room.

Jason had received financial help from both parents.

And neither parent had understood the full picture.

That fact made me question things I had previously accepted without much thought.

Every request had seemed immediate.

Every explanation had sounded urgent.

I had been focused on whether I could afford to help that particular time.

I hadn't been asking what the requests meant together.

I hadn't been asking whether Jason was giving David the same information.

I hadn't even known there was a disagreement about what I was contributing.

I looked at the two amounts visible on the statement.

Five hundred dollars.

Seven hundred dollars.

I had no reason to doubt the bank record.

But I found myself wanting to.

That was an uncomfortable discovery.

I wasn't looking for evidence anymore.

I was looking for something that would let me return to believing my son had been straightforward with us.

A simple misunderstanding would have been easier.

A forgotten conversation.

A confused date.

Anything except deliberate dishonesty.

But I couldn't make a misunderstanding out of a statement that I had stopped helping nearly a year earlier.

I had not stopped.

I had given him more than four thousand dollars.

That was a fact.

I took a slow breath.

I wanted to ask Jason why he needed so much money.

The question was there.

It had been there for a long time.

But I knew the source I had in front of me didn't answer it.

There were records of transfers.

There were his requests.

There was what David had been told.

There was what happened when I refused.

I couldn't claim to know anything beyond those things.

And I was beginning to see that I didn't need to know every answer before taking my own safety seriously.

I had made that mistake before.

I had waited for explanations.

Waited for apologies.

Waited for proof that Jason understood.

Meanwhile, I had continued to give him money.

I had continued to make room for his anger.

I had continued to believe the next conversation might be different.

Then he had hit me.

I looked at Rebecca.

She wasn't treating the situation as an ordinary family argument.

That mattered.

I had spent so much time thinking about Jason as my son that I had struggled to look at his behavior separately from our relationship.

Rebecca's presence did not erase that relationship.

It simply meant that the harm deserved attention.

I looked toward Officer Brooks.

I had asked for assistance with a safe separation.

The phrase still hurt.

It sounded formal.

Cold.

Almost impossible to connect with a mother and her child.

But I understood why it was necessary.

I didn't know how Jason would respond once the conversation became more difficult.

I didn't want to guess.

I didn't want to put myself in danger simply to prove that I trusted him.

I had trusted him the night before.

I had believed refusing money would lead to an argument at worst.

I had been wrong.

Now I had help.

I needed to allow that help to matter.

The room was quiet again.

Jason hadn't given me an explanation that resolved what David had revealed.

I watched him standing there and felt the old desire to speak for him.

Maybe he had misunderstood his father.

Maybe he hadn't meant to mislead anyone.

Maybe there was some reason he had kept the money separate.

Those thoughts came easily.

Too easily.

I recognized them for what they were.

Explanations I was inventing because I wanted to feel better.

I stopped.

Jason was capable of speaking for himself.

I didn't need to build his defense.

I looked down at the table.

The plate of pancakes was still there.

When I had placed it down, I had hoped calmness would keep the morning from becoming frightening.

Now I understood something different.

Calmness did not mean pretending there was no danger.

It meant being able to face what had happened without letting fear make every decision.

I didn't feel brave.

I didn't feel certain.

I felt like a tired woman who had finally admitted she couldn't continue the way she had been living.

That was enough for the moment.

I looked at my son again.

I loved him.

I wanted him to be safe.

I wanted him to have a life that wasn't built around asking other people for money.

But I no longer believed I could give him those things simply by saying yes.

The night before had shown me the cost of refusing him.

The bank records had shown me the cost of believing I knew everything.

And the people sitting in my dining room reminded me that I was allowed to protect myself while still being his mother.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: My Son
