4 – I Looked at Two Bank Transfers and Understood That My Son Had Been Asking Both Parents for Money While Keeping Us Apart

The first amount I noticed was five hundred dollars.

I read it once.

Then again.

I looked at the line beneath it.

Seven hundred dollars.

I kept my eyes on the paper.

The numbers were clear.

There was nothing confusing about them.

Five hundred.

Seven hundred.

Money David had transferred to Jason.

I had been prepared for an uncomfortable conversation that morning.

I had been prepared for anger.

Denial.

Another apology.

I had even prepared myself to hear Jason say I was being unfair.

But I hadn't prepared myself for this.

I was looking at money I hadn't known my son was receiving.

And the person who had sent it was his father.

David sat down again.

I noticed how carefully he moved his chair.

He seemed to be controlling his own emotions.

He had already admitted he should have paid closer attention.

Now I understood why those words had sounded so heavy.

He wasn't only upset about the violence.

He had discovered that his son hadn't been honest with him about our financial situation.

I looked at David.

"He's been getting money from you all this time?"

David nodded.

"Yes."

I glanced down again.

The records weren't guesses.

They weren't accusations.

They were details from his account.

I couldn't explain them away.

I couldn't tell myself that David had misunderstood a conversation.

The transfers were right in front of me.

I thought about the four thousand dollars I had given Jason.

More than four thousand.

That was only my side.

David had his own records.

His own payments.

His own reasons for believing our son needed assistance.

I wondered what Jason had told him each time he asked.

I knew only one thing for certain.

He had claimed I had stopped giving him money almost a year earlier.

That wasn't true.

It hadn't been true during the months when I was handing over my own money.

And it wasn't true the previous evening when he demanded more.

I thought about the way he had reacted when I refused.

There had been anger in his voice.

There had been pressure.

Then he had hit me.

Until that morning, I had viewed the confrontation as the terrible end of a dispute over money.

Now the dispute looked different.

He hadn't merely been demanding help from me.

He had been receiving financial help from David while telling him I was no longer contributing.

I couldn't ignore what that meant.

Jason had allowed his father to believe something false about me.

And he had allowed me to believe I understood the amount of support he was receiving.

I felt betrayed.

The word came to me quietly.

It wasn't as sharp as the pain of being struck.

It didn't make my cheek ache any more than it already did.

But it settled deeply.

I had trusted Jason to tell me the truth about his needs.

David had trusted him too.

Neither of us had known what the other was being told.

I looked toward my son.

He was still near the table.

For a moment, I saw him as I always wanted to see him.

My child.

The person I had spent years caring for.

Someone I wanted to help when life became difficult.

Then I looked at the papers again.

I couldn't make the two pictures fit comfortably together.

I loved him.

But love didn't change the numbers.

Love didn't change what David had been told.

Love didn't change what had happened to my face.

I had spent years believing patience would eventually solve the problems between us.

If I explained things carefully enough, Jason would understand.

If I gave him time, he would mature.

If I helped him through one more difficult period, perhaps he would find his footing.

I had held on to those thoughts because the alternative frightened me.

What if helping him wasn't helping?

What if giving in was teaching him that every refusal could be overcome?

What if my fear of upsetting him had become part of the reason I couldn't say no safely?

I didn't like those questions.

They made me examine my own decisions.

It would have been easier to focus entirely on Jason.

To tell myself I had done everything right and he alone had created the situation.

But I knew there had been moments when I should have spoken more clearly.

Moments when I had accepted excuses because I didn't want another argument.

Moments when I had treated temporary peace as proof that things were improving.

I wasn't responsible for Jason choosing to hit me.

That choice belonged to him.

But I had been responsible for taking my own safety seriously.

And for too long, I hadn't.

I looked at Rebecca.

Her folder was still open.

I remembered what she had said when Jason entered.

She worked with people dealing with abuse inside their families.

The word abuse had felt strange when I first considered it.

I was a mother.

He was my son.

Those were the words I had always used to explain our relationship.

They had made it difficult to describe what happened between us in any other way.

But the relationship didn't make the harm disappear.

It didn't make being hit less serious.

And it didn't make Jason's financial demands something I was required to accept.

Officer Brooks remained near the window.

I remembered his explanation.

I had asked for help with a safe separation.

Not revenge.

Not humiliation.

Safety.

That distinction mattered to me.

I hadn't gathered people in the dining room because I wanted my son to suffer.

I had asked them to come because I was afraid of what might happen if I tried to handle everything alone again.

The night before had changed what I could ignore.

The financial records were changing what I believed.

I looked down at the page.

Five hundred dollars.

Seven hundred dollars.

Two amounts that should have meant little more than money transferred between a father and his son.

Instead, they had exposed something neither parent understood.

Jason was asking both of us for financial help.

And he hadn't been honest about it.

I wondered how much of his anger came from believing I would always give him what he wanted.

I wondered whether he had expected me to remain silent about the previous evening.

I wondered how many more conversations David and I might have had without knowing we were hearing different versions of the same situation.

I couldn't answer those questions.

I had no proof of anything beyond what was in front of me.

And I didn't want to replace Jason's excuses with guesses of my own.

The truth was already serious enough.

I looked at David.

His eyes were still on the records.

For years, I had thought of us as two parents doing our best to support our son, even when we weren't in the same place.

I had never imagined that our separate attempts to help might be hiding the full picture from both of us.

David raised his eyes.

There was sadness in his expression.

I recognized it because I felt the same thing.

We weren't looking at a stranger's behavior.

We were looking at something our own child had done.

That made the truth harder.

Not easier.

I thought about Jason's apology a few minutes earlier.

His softened voice.

His insistence that he hadn't meant to hurt me.

His explanation that life had been stressful.

I had heard those words while looking at the swelling on my cheek.

At the time, I had believed the real challenge would be resisting the familiar urge to forgive him immediately.

Now I understood that the apology wasn't the only thing I needed to examine.

I needed to examine what I had been willing to believe.

I had believed money was the answer to his immediate problems.

I had believed a mother's patience could repair almost any damage.

I had believed that keeping family trouble private was sometimes the kindest thing to do.

That morning, every one of those beliefs felt less certain.

I glanced toward the doorway where Jason had first appeared.

He had entered smiling.

I remembered that clearly.

He had walked into breakfast expecting the previous night to be behind us.

I had watched the smile leave his face when he saw David.

Then Rebecca.

Then Officer Brooks.

I realized how different our expectations had been.

Jason had expected another morning in which his actions could be explained away.

I had prepared a morning in which I would finally tell the truth without hiding behind excuses.

Neither of us had expected David's papers to reveal another problem.

Yet there they were.

Printed pages lying beside breakfast plates.

Proof that the story I thought I knew was incomplete.

I touched the edge of the first sheet again.

I no longer cared whether my hands were shaking.

I no longer cared whether Jason thought I was being too severe.

Those worries had occupied too much of my life already.

What mattered was that I had asked for help.

David had come.

Rebecca was there.

Officer Brooks was there.

And for once, I wasn't facing Jason's anger with nothing but my own hope that he would calm down.

I looked at my son.

He was twenty-three.

Old enough to understand that other people had the right to refuse him money.

Old enough to know that striking someone was wrong.

Old enough to understand that lying to one parent about another could damage the trust between all three.

I couldn't make him accept those things.

I couldn't force him to feel remorse.

I couldn't control what explanation he might offer next.

But I could stop pretending that the explanations I had heard before were enough.

I looked down at the first two transfers once more.

Five hundred.

Seven hundred.

I had walked into that dining room knowing my son had hurt me because I refused to give him money.

Now I knew he had been taking financial help from both parents while keeping each of us from understanding the full situation.

The bruise on my cheek showed what had happened the previous night.

The bank records showed there was more to understand.

I raised my eyes from the papers.

For the first time that morning, I wasn't thinking about how to keep Jason calm.

I was thinking about how much of the truth David and I had missed.

And I was no longer willing to ignore what was right in front of us.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: My Son Finally Looked
