3 – David Put His Bank Records Beside My Untouched Breakfast, and One Question Made Me Realize My Son Had Lied to Both of Us

I kept looking at the printed pages.

I didn't understand why David had brought them.

At first, I assumed he wanted to show Jason how much financial help he had already received.

I thought it was meant to support the conversation we were having.

Jason wanted money.

He became angry when I refused.

David was going to remind him that he couldn't keep treating his parents as though their money belonged to him.

That explanation made sense to me.

For about three seconds.

Then I looked at Jason.

He was staring at the papers.

The softness he had used while apologizing was gone.

His face had become guarded.

I knew that expression too.

I had seen it when he didn't want to answer a question.

When he was trying to work out how much someone already knew.

When he wanted time to prepare an explanation.

I looked back at David.

He seemed disappointed.

Not surprised.

Disappointed.

He touched the edge of the first page.

"I went through the transfers from my account this morning."

Jason didn't move.

I wondered why that information had affected him so strongly.

David had helped him financially before.

I knew that much.

They were father and son.

I had never assumed every financial conversation between them needed to involve me.

But I believed I understood the general situation.

I thought Jason came to me when he was short of money.

I thought those requests placed most of the burden on my shoulders.

I thought David understood that too.

It turned out both of us had been working with different information.

David looked at me.

"Sarah, can you tell me how much you've lent Jason?"

I felt Jason's eyes move toward my face.

I didn't look at him.

I thought about the money.

Not the exact sequence of every request.

Just the total.

The number I had been carrying around in my head.

More than four thousand dollars.

I had known it was a lot.

I had known it bothered me.

But I had tried not to think about what it represented.

It was money I had earned.

Money I could have used for my own needs.

Money I had handed over because I wanted to help my son.

And because refusing him had become increasingly difficult.

I cleared my throat.

"Over four thousand."

David watched me closely.

"More than four thousand dollars?"

I nodded.

"Yes."

Hearing the number spoken aloud made it feel heavier.

For months, money had come up in separate conversations.

A request here.

Another there.

Each one seemed like a new problem.

A new reason.

A new occasion when I was supposed to understand.

But when I put the amounts together, they became something I couldn't dismiss.

Four thousand dollars.

More than that, actually.

I hadn't been discussing spare change with my son.

I had been giving him a substantial amount of money.

And still he had demanded more.

I looked at Jason.

He didn't meet my eyes.

David gave a slow nod.

Then he said something that made me forget the bruise for a moment.

"That's not what Jason told me."

I stared at him.

"What do you mean?"

David glanced toward our son.

Then he looked back at me.

"He told me you hadn't been supporting him financially for nearly a year."

I didn't understand.

For a moment, the sentence didn't seem to fit with anything I knew.

I had just told David how much money I had given Jason.

David had heard me.

And now he was saying our son had told him the opposite.

I looked at Jason.

He was still standing near the table.

I wanted him to correct David.

I wanted him to say there had been a misunderstanding.

That he hadn't meant it that way.

That David had remembered incorrectly.

Anything.

I waited.

Jason said nothing.

I turned back to David.

"He said I stopped giving him money?"

David nodded.

"That's what he told me."

Nearly a year.

I kept hearing those words.

Nearly a year.

According to the version Jason had given his father, I had stopped helping him long ago.

In that version, perhaps I was the parent who refused to support him.

The parent who had left him struggling.

The parent who couldn't be counted on.

Meanwhile, I had given him more than four thousand dollars.

I felt something shift inside me.

It wasn't the same shock I had felt when he hit me.

That had been immediate.

Physical.

Impossible to misunderstand.

This was different.

It made me look backward.

At every request.

Every explanation.

Every time I had worried that I wasn't doing enough for him.

I had spent so much time asking myself whether I was being a good mother.

I had never seriously considered that Jason might be giving his father a completely different account of our relationship.

David moved the first printed sheet toward me.

I looked down.

There were records of transfers.

Money that had come from David's account.

Money that had gone to Jason.

My eyes moved over the page.

I didn't know what I was supposed to say.

I had assumed David had helped from time to time.

But I hadn't expected to see evidence of repeated payments.

David looked at me.

"He's been asking me for money regularly."

I felt a strange pressure in my chest.

"How regularly?"

David answered without hesitation.

"Every month. Some months, more than once."

I stared at him.

I had known about my own payments.

I hadn't known about those.

David continued looking at the papers.

His expression told me this wasn't an easy conversation for him either.

I tried to understand the timing.

While Jason had been asking me for money, he had also been asking his father.

While I had been thinking about how much more I could afford to give him, David had been sending money too.

And all the while, Jason had told David that I wasn't helping.

I felt foolish.

That was the first emotion I could name.

Not because lending money to my son had been foolish by itself.

Helping a child wasn't something I wanted to regret automatically.

But I had believed I understood the situation.

I had believed I knew the pressure he was under.

I had believed that if he was desperate enough to become angry with me, perhaps he truly had nowhere else to turn.

Now I was looking at proof that he had another source of money.

A source he had kept separate from me.

I touched the edge of the paper.

It was only a printed bank record.

Nothing dramatic.

No strange document.

No complicated secret written in code.

Just transactions.

Amounts.

Transfers.

The kind of information that should have been ordinary.

Yet I couldn't stop looking at it.

David had flown from Los Angeles to help me confront what Jason had done.

I had expected difficult questions about violence.

About boundaries.

About my safety.

I hadn't expected to learn that my son had been telling each parent a different story about money.

Jason had wanted me to believe the previous evening was only an argument.

He had wanted David to believe I had stopped helping him.

And I had been standing between those stories without knowing they existed.

I looked up at him.

He still hadn't offered an explanation.

The silence bothered me more than I expected.

A little earlier, he had been quick to defend himself.

Quick to challenge my account.

Quick to say I had made things seem worse than they were.

Now he seemed reluctant to speak.

I wondered whether he was trying to decide what to admit.

Or whether he believed he could still talk his way out of the situation.

I didn't know.

I knew only what David had shown me.

The money had been sent.

The story about me refusing financial help had been told.

And I had not been aware of either part.

Rebecca remained quiet.

Officer Brooks did too.

I was grateful for that.

I didn't need someone to explain what the papers meant.

I needed a moment to accept that they were real.

The pancakes were still sitting on the table.

I had made them thinking I could stay calm through whatever Jason said.

Now I couldn't remember why I had been so focused on breakfast.

I looked at David again.

He had placed several sheets in front of me.

I had seen only the first.

And already I understood that the question was no longer simply why Jason had demanded more money from me.

It was how much money he had been receiving from both of us.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: I Looked at Two Bank Transfers and Understood That My Son Had Been Asking Both Parents for Money While Keeping Us Apart

I kept looking at the printed pages.
