She refused. And instead of accepting that, you hit her."

Jason's jaw tightened.

He had been looking at me with that softened expression only seconds earlier.

Now the anger returned.

"You don't know what happened."

David didn't interrupt.

Jason turned more fully toward him.

"You weren't even there."

I looked down at my hands.

He was right about one thing.

David hadn't witnessed the confrontation.

But he was wrong about what that meant.

A person didn't have to watch something happen to recognize the harm it caused.

The swelling on my cheek hadn't appeared by accident.

Jason knew that.

I knew it.

And David knew it now too.

For a long time, Jason had relied on my silence.

If I didn't tell anyone, there was nobody else to question his explanation.

If I softened the details, he didn't have to defend the worst of his behavior.

If I forgave him quickly, he could treat the matter as settled.

That arrangement had protected him.

It had not protected me.

David took a moment before answering.

"No, I wasn't there."

His voice remained level.

"But I should have been asking more questions long before last night."

I looked up.

Something about those words caught my attention.

David wasn't simply telling Jason that his behavior was wrong.

He was admitting something about himself.

I could see it in his face.

He wasn't trying to appear blameless.

And that surprised me.

Because I had spent so much time feeling responsible for Jason that I had almost forgotten David might have questions of his own.

Jason looked uneasy.

His eyes moved from his father to me.

I wanted to ask David what he meant.

But before I could say anything, he reached inside his jacket.

He took out several printed sheets.

He placed them carefully on the dining room table.

The sound was small.

Paper touching wood.

Yet I remember it more clearly than many of the words spoken that morning.

Jason looked down.

His expression changed again.

This time, he didn't seem angry.

He seemed concerned.

Not about the bruise.

Not about my feelings.

About those papers.

David rested one hand beside them.

"I checked the money I've been sending you."

The room seemed to grow quieter.

Jason didn't say anything.

I looked at the pages.

I hadn't known David had brought financial records.

I hadn't known there was anything to check.

I thought I understood how much money Jason was borrowing.

Then I saw my son's face.

And I realized that I might not know nearly as much as I believed.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: David Put His Bank Records Beside My Untouched Breakfast, and One Question Made Me Realize My Son Had Lied to Both of Us

Jason kept staring at Rebecca.
