15 – As I Studied Todd’s Household Figures Again, I Began to See How Easily Practical Plans Could Ignore the Person Expected to Live With Them

The figures on Todd's legal pad hadn't changed.

I looked at them again.

Mortgage.

Electricity.

Water.

Groceries.

Insurance.

Maintenance.

There was nothing unusual about the list.

It described the ordinary expenses of running a home.

And that was part of what made the first conversation so difficult.

Todd hadn't presented something completely unreasonable on its face.

He had listed costs that actually existed.

He had thought about what another person living in the house might mean for those costs.

He had tried to make an arrangement he believed would be fair.

I could understand all of that.

What I couldn't accept was being left out of the decision.

I looked at him.

"Can I ask you something about these numbers?"

He nodded.

"Of course."

I touched the first page.

"When you made this list, what were you trying to figure out?"

He looked down.

"How much it would cost to have you living with us."

I nodded.

"All right."

I paused.

"And when you finished, you decided on eight hundred dollars?"

"Yes."

I looked at the page.

"And then you added the babysitting."

He nodded again.

"Yes."

I set my hand beside the pad.

"Did you ever stop and think about how those two things would sound together?"

He was quiet.

Then he shook his head.

"Not properly."

I nodded.

That was what I had suspected.

He had treated each part as practical.

The money covered expenses.

The childcare made the overall arrangement work.

The basement provided a place for me to stay.

Each part had a purpose.

But the whole arrangement felt different when viewed from my side.

I would be paying money.

Providing regular childcare.

And living in a room chosen for me.

All while trying to remain a grateful guest in my daughter's household.

I looked at Todd.

"That's why it felt like so much."

He listened.

"It wasn't one request."

I paused.

"It was several decisions about my life, all made before I had a chance to talk about them."

He lowered his eyes.

"I understand."

I wanted to believe that was the end of my need to explain.

But the numbers kept drawing my attention.

They were so neat.

So certain.

A person could look at them and assume the answer had to be correct.

I had done something similar.

For nine days, I had treated Todd's calculations as evidence that my discomfort might be unreasonable.

I had thought that if he could show how he reached eight hundred dollars, then perhaps I had no right to question the arrangement.

That was a mistake.

A calculation could be accurate and still fail to answer the most important question.

Whether the arrangement was acceptable to the person expected to live under it.

I looked at the pad.

"The numbers might make sense for your household."

Todd nodded.

"But they don't automatically tell you what makes sense for mine."

He looked up.

I continued.

"My retirement money has to cover my needs."

"Yes."

"And my time is mine to manage."

"Of course."

I paused.

"And I need somewhere to live where I feel comfortable."

He nodded again.

Those statements sounded obvious now.

I wondered why they hadn't sounded obvious nine days earlier.

Perhaps because the original offer had been presented with such certainty.

There was something powerful about a person who had already done the arithmetic.

Someone who could point to figures and explain exactly how he reached a total.

It made disagreement feel emotional.

Unreasonable.

As though the person questioning the plan was refusing to accept facts.

But I wasn't disputing the existence of household expenses.

I was questioning the assumption that Todd's calculation should determine my life.

Those were different things.

I looked at Michelle.

She was listening.

I wondered whether she had viewed the original arrangement as something that would help everyone.

I couldn't know exactly what she had thought.

But I could understand why that idea might have appealed to her.

Her mother would be nearby.

The children would have more time with their grandmother.

The household would receive money toward its expenses.

On paper, it might have looked sensible.

But I wasn't a line in a budget.

I was the person who would have to live with the result.

I looked down.

"I think the hardest part was feeling as though my concerns came second."

Todd watched me.

"Second to what?"

"The plan."

He became quiet.

I continued.

"You had the plan worked out."

I touched the paper.

"And I felt like I was supposed to fit into it."

He nodded slowly.

I thought about the basement window again.

Such a small detail.

Yet it had become the thing I remembered most clearly about the room.

I wasn't sure whether it was because the window was small or because I had felt small during the conversation.

Maybe both.

I didn't say that aloud.

I wasn't trying to turn every detail into an accusation.

But I couldn't ignore how the memory affected me.

I looked at Todd.

"The room might have been perfectly fine."

He waited.

"I don't know."

I paused.

"But I didn't feel like I had been part of choosing it."

He lowered his eyes.

"I understand."

I nodded.

I didn't need him to apologize again.

I had heard the apology.

I had accepted that he regretted his approach.

Now I was trying to understand what I needed from any future discussion.

I needed questions before conclusions.

I needed time before commitments.

I needed room to disagree without feeling that I was hurting the people I loved.

Those were reasonable things.

And I wanted to remember them.

I looked at the yellow paper.

The first list showed what Todd had thought about.

The second showed what he had missed.

Seeing them together made something clear.

He hadn't needed to stop being practical.

He had needed to be practical about my life too.

My privacy was practical.

My retirement funds were practical.

My ability to decide how I spent my days was practical.

Those weren't vague feelings that could be ignored because they were difficult to measure.

They were part of the reality of the arrangement.

I looked at him.

"I don't want you to think emotions and practical concerns are separate things."

Todd seemed to consider that.

I continued.

"If I moved in and didn't feel comfortable, that would become a practical problem."

He nodded.

"If I agreed to four days and later felt overwhelmed, that would become a practical problem."

"Yes."

"And if eight hundred dollars affected what I could afford for myself, that would be a practical problem too."

He looked down at the pad.

"You're right."

I felt a little relief.

That was the point I had wanted to make.

The arrangement wasn't truly practical if it worked on paper but left the person living under it unhappy.

I didn't need to prove that the arrangement would fail.

I only needed to acknowledge that those possibilities mattered.

I looked toward Michelle.

"I want you both to understand that I wasn't questioning whether you have expenses."

She nodded.

"I know."

"I was questioning whether this was right for me."

Todd looked at me.

"That's what we should have asked."

I nodded.

"Yes."

The room became quiet.

For once, I didn't feel the need to fill the silence.

I looked at the pad again.

I thought about what Todd must have believed when he first made the list.

He had probably felt that having numbers would make the conversation easier.

Maybe he believed the figures would prevent misunderstandings.

I didn't know.

I wasn't going to pretend I knew his private thoughts.

But I could see why he might have trusted the calculations.

Numbers were easier to explain than relationships.

A mortgage had a payment.

Electricity had a bill.

Groceries had a cost.

But how did someone measure the value of choosing her own schedule?

How did someone put a price on privacy?

How did someone calculate the cost of feeling obligated whenever her grandchildren needed care?

Those things didn't fit neatly on a page.

That didn't make them less real.

It made them easier to overlook.

I looked at the second list.

Todd had finally written them down.

Not as expenses with amounts beside them.

As things that mattered.

I appreciated that he hadn't tried to attach a price to them.

He hadn't written an estimate for my independence.

He hadn't calculated the monthly value of my privacy.

He had simply acknowledged that those things would be affected.

That was enough to change how I understood the page.

I looked at Todd.

"I'm glad you didn't try to put a number next to these."

He followed my gaze.

"The second list?"

"Yes."

He nodded.

"I didn't know how."

I looked at him.

"I don't think you needed to."

He was quiet.

I continued.

"Some things matter even when you can't calculate them."

He nodded slowly.

I rested my hands on the table.

I felt tired.

Not angry.

Not defeated.

Just tired from finally discussing things I had been holding inside.

The conversation had taken longer than I expected.

But I didn't regret it.

I had needed to hear Todd admit what he missed.

And I had needed to hear myself explain why it mattered.

I looked at Michelle.

Her eyes were still tired.

I wished we could end the visit on an easier note.

But I wasn't ready to pretend everything had been settled.

I hoped she understood.

I looked back at Todd.

"I don't want another set of numbers right now."

He nodded.

"All right."

"I don't want another proposal today."

"I understand."

I paused.

"And I don't want anyone to decide what my contribution should be before asking me."

He looked at me.

"That makes sense."

I nodded.

That was the boundary I needed.

Not a refusal to ever help.

Not a demand that they ignore the costs of their household.

Just a decision that I would be part of any discussion affecting my money, time, and living arrangements.

I looked at the legal pad again.

It had started as a record of household expenses.

Then it had become an acknowledgment of what Todd had overlooked.

Now, for me, it had become a reminder of something even simpler.

A plan wasn't fair merely because its numbers added up.

It also had to include the person expected to live with it.

I didn't know whether Michelle and Todd would eventually offer a different arrangement.

I didn't know whether I would want one.

Those questions remained open.

But I knew I wouldn't make my next decision by staring at circles around a number.

I would make it by considering the whole of my life.

And I would expect anyone involved to do the same.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: Before I Could Think About Any New
