13 – I Had Finally Given Myself Permission to Wait, but Watching Michelle Struggle Made That Simple Decision Harder Than I Expected

I thought saying I needed time would make me feel better.

For a moment, it did.

Todd had accepted my answer.

Michelle had nodded.

Nobody had argued.

Nobody had asked me to reconsider the eight hundred dollars.

Nobody had reminded me about the four days of babysitting.

I should have been relieved.

Instead, I found myself looking at my daughter's face.

Michelle was still standing near my kitchen table.

Her coat remained buttoned.

Her eyes were red.

I could see that the conversation had taken something out of her.

And immediately, I felt the old pressure returning.

I wanted to fix it.

I wanted to say something that would make her smile.

I wanted her to stop looking as though every word I spoke hurt.

That was the part of being a mother I had never learned to set aside.

When Michelle was unhappy, I felt responsible.

Not always because I had caused it.

Sometimes simply because I was her mother.

I had spent years responding to that feeling without questioning it.

Now I was beginning to see how easily it could lead me somewhere I didn't want to go.

I looked at Todd.

He was sitting across from me.

The yellow legal pad lay on the table between us.

It had become the center of the conversation.

First because of what he had written.

Then because of everything I had finally managed to say.

I wondered whether he realized how much those few pages had affected me.

I didn't ask.

I was tired of searching for meaning in every movement and expression.

I wanted to deal with what people actually said.

And with what I actually felt.

Michelle rubbed her hands together.

I watched her for a moment.

Then I spoke.

"You don't have to stand there, sweetheart."

She looked at me.

"I'm all right, Mom."

I nodded.

I didn't insist.

That felt important.

I had just spent a long time explaining why I wanted my choices respected.

I could respect hers too.

Even when I wished she would sit down.

Todd glanced toward the legal pad.

"Judy, I know this has been difficult."

I looked at him.

"Yes."

He waited.

I appreciated that he didn't immediately explain himself again.

There was nothing useful in repeating the same apology until we were all too tired to think.

He had acknowledged what he'd done.

I had explained why it hurt.

Now the harder part was accepting that we couldn't solve every feeling in one conversation.

I looked down at the page.

The household expenses were still there.

Mortgage.

Electricity.

Water.

Groceries.

Insurance.

Maintenance.

I could understand every item.

I had never denied that those expenses mattered.

But I was no longer willing to let them become the only things we considered.

I turned my attention to the second list.

My privacy.

My independence.

My retirement money.

My freedom to decide when I cared for my grandchildren.

I read those words again.

They were still difficult to see.

Not because I disagreed with them.

Because I had spent nine days convincing myself I was asking for too much.

Now Todd had written down the very things I had been afraid to defend.

I looked at Michelle.

"I don't want you leaving here thinking I've stopped caring about what you need."

She shook her head.

"I don't think that."

I studied her face.

I wanted to believe her.

But I also knew how often people said reassuring things because they wanted a painful conversation to end.

I had done that myself.

More times than I could count.

I looked down.

"Good."

That was all I said.

I didn't ask her to promise she wasn't disappointed.

She was allowed to feel disappointed.

Just as I was allowed to feel uncertain.

That seemed like such an obvious idea.

Yet it had taken me nine days to understand it.

I thought about the first conversation.

The way Todd had looked toward the salt shaker.

The way the number had been circled twice.

The basement window.

I had turned those details over in my mind until they seemed larger than the actual room or the actual piece of paper.

I had wondered whether Todd's refusal to meet my eyes meant he knew the arrangement was unfair.

I had wondered whether Michelle believed I should be grateful enough not to question it.

I had wondered whether refusing would change how they treated me.

Those were guesses.

Painful guesses.

And they had occupied far too much of my time.

Now Todd was sitting in front of me.

Michelle was standing nearby.

I didn't have to guess about everything anymore.

I could ask.

I looked at Todd.

"When you first worked out that amount, did you think I'd be pleased?"

He thought for a moment.

"I thought you'd see it as a practical arrangement."

I nodded.

"That isn't quite the same thing."

"No."

He looked at the paper.

"I realize that."

I watched him.

I could see he was trying to answer carefully.

I appreciated that.

But careful answers weren't necessarily dishonest.

Sometimes they meant a person finally understood that words could hurt.

I had needed to learn that too.

I looked toward Michelle.

"Did you think I'd feel comfortable with it?"

She hesitated.

I waited.

"I thought being close to us would matter to you."

Her voice was quiet.

I felt a familiar ache.

"It does."

She looked at me.

"It matters very much."

I paused.

"But it can't be the only thing that matters."

Michelle nodded slowly.

I looked down at my hands.

There it was again.

The problem in a few simple words.

Being near my family mattered.

So did being able to make my own decisions.

Those wishes weren't enemies.

I didn't have to choose one and deny the other.

But I couldn't pretend that one automatically satisfied the other.

I thought about the basement.

Maybe I would have liked living there.

Maybe I would have enjoyed hearing the children nearby.

Maybe being closer to Michelle would have made some parts of life easier.

I couldn't know.

I hadn't moved there.

I hadn't lived through an ordinary week under that arrangement.

But I could imagine what might become difficult.

Four fixed days of childcare.

A monthly payment.

The feeling that my place in the household depended on meeting expectations.

And the question of whether I could ask for privacy without seeming ungrateful.

Those concerns were enough to make me hesitate.

I didn't need to prove that something terrible would happen before taking them seriously.

Todd looked at me.

"I don't want you to feel that you have to accept anything because we're family."

I raised my eyes.

"I appreciate that."

He nodded.

I continued.

"But I need more than permission to refuse."

He seemed uncertain.

I tried to explain.

"I need to know that refusing wouldn't change the way we treat one another."

Todd became quiet.

Michelle looked at me.

I could feel how important the sentence was.

I hadn't planned to say it.

But once I did, I knew it was the thing that had frightened me most.

Not the money alone.

Not the babysitting alone.

The possibility that saying no would somehow make me less welcome as a mother and grandmother.

I looked toward Michelle.

"I don't want a decision about living arrangements to become a judgment about how much I love you."

Her eyes filled.

"I don't want that either, Mom."

I nodded.

That was enough for the moment.

I didn't need her to prove it.

I didn't need another promise.

I needed us to remember what we had just said when the conversation became difficult again.

Todd looked at the pad.

"That's another thing I didn't consider."

I glanced at him.

"The way the arrangement might affect how you felt about being with us."

I nodded.

"Yes."

He looked down.

"I'm sorry."

I believed him.

But I didn't rush to say it was fine.

I had already told him I appreciated his apology.

He knew that.

I didn't need to comfort him every time he acknowledged a mistake.

I realized how unusual that felt.

I had spent so much of my life softening uncomfortable moments.

Changing the subject.

Reassuring people.

Pretending I wasn't hurt.

Now I was letting the discomfort exist without trying to remove it immediately.

It wasn't pleasant.

But it felt necessary.

I looked at Michelle.

She wiped her cheek.

I wanted to reach for her hand.

For a moment, I hesitated.

Then I held mine out.

She stepped closer and took it.

Her fingers were warm.

I didn't say anything.

Neither did she.

I wasn't taking back what I'd said.

I wasn't promising to move.

I wasn't agreeing to any schedule.

I was simply holding my daughter's hand.

That mattered too.

I needed to remember that affection didn't have to come with an agreement.

I could comfort her without surrendering my decision.

And she could accept that comfort without asking me for anything.

I looked at our hands.

I felt something ease inside me.

Not everything.

But something.

Todd remained quiet.

I appreciated that he didn't try to turn the moment into a conclusion.

We weren't finished.

We weren't suddenly certain about what would happen.

But we had stopped treating uncertainty as something that needed to be solved before we could care about one another.

I looked at Michelle.

"I love you."

"I love you too, Mom."

I nodded.

My throat felt tight.

I wanted to say more.

I wanted to explain that I had never questioned my love for her.

Only what I was being asked to give.

But I had already said those things.

Repeating them wouldn't make them more true.

I let her hand rest in mine for another moment.

Then I released it.

She stayed beside the table.

I looked at Todd.

"I still need time."

He nodded.

"I understand."

I looked at Michelle.

She nodded too.

This time, I believed the answer enough to stop asking.

I didn't need anyone to be pleased with my uncertainty.

I only needed them to respect it.

I glanced at the yellow legal pad.

The four items remained there.

The words hadn't changed.

Neither had the practical questions waiting for us.

But something about the room felt different.

Michelle was closer.

Todd was no longer standing over the table with the paper in his hands.

And I had been able to tell them what frightened me without losing my place in the conversation.

I didn't know what decision I would eventually make.

I didn't know whether the basement would ever become part of my future.

But I knew that whatever happened, I wanted it to begin with something the original offer had lacked.

A real conversation.

One where no one had to pretend that love erased individual needs.

I placed my hand on the yellow pad.

For nine days, I had believed the important question was whether I could accept the arrangement.

Now I understood there was another question.

Could we remain a family even if I didn't?

I looked at my daughter.

She was still beside me.

And for that moment, I allowed myself to believe we could.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: I Finally Understood Why Four Days With My Grandchildren Had Frightened Me,
