9 – After Todd Admitted His Mistake, I Realized That Accepting His Apology and Accepting His Offer Were Two Very Different Things

I had thought an apology would make everything easier.

It didn't.

Todd had admitted that his original arrangement was wrong.

Michelle had listened while I explained why it hurt.

And the yellow legal pad was still resting on my kitchen table.

But nothing had been decided.

Not the basement.

Not the eight hundred dollars.

Not the four days of babysitting.

I looked at the paper again.

For nine days, I had wanted someone to understand how I felt.

Now Todd seemed to understand.

And I had discovered that understanding didn't automatically tell me what to do next.

That surprised me.

I had spent so much time wanting the first conversation to be corrected that I hadn't thought much about what would happen afterward.

I suppose I had imagined the problem would become smaller once someone acknowledged it.

Instead, I could see it more clearly.

The numbers were still there.

The room was still there.

The needs of their household were still there.

And my own needs hadn't gone anywhere either.

Todd stood beside the chair.

Michelle remained close to the table.

Neither of them was pressing me for an answer.

That was different.

Nine days earlier, I had felt as though the answer was the only thing that mattered.

Would I accept the arrangement?

Would I pay the money?

Would I care for the children?

Everything seemed to lead toward a decision they had already prepared.

Now nobody was asking me to decide.

I should have felt completely relieved.

Instead, I felt uncertain.

I had become so used to thinking about what they wanted that I wasn't sure how to begin thinking about what I wanted.

That embarrassed me.

I was old enough to know my own mind.

At least, I had always believed I was.

Yet here I sat, staring at a piece of paper because I didn't know how to explain something that should have been simple.

I wanted to be treated like a person who still had choices.

Not someone whose choices had become inconvenient.

I looked at Todd.

"I appreciate what you've said."

He nodded.

"I mean that."

"I know."

I rested my fingers on the legal pad.

"But I don't want us to confuse this conversation with a decision."

He looked at me carefully.

"All right."

"I haven't agreed to anything."

"I understand."

I paused.

"And I haven't ruled out having a conversation about what might work."

Todd nodded again.

"That's fair."

The word made me uncomfortable.

Fair.

It was the word that had caused so much confusion in the first place.

Todd had believed the original arrangement was fair because he had calculated household expenses.

I had spent nine days wondering whether fairness meant accepting a financial obligation and a childcare schedule I hadn't chosen.

Now he was using the word again.

But this time, he wasn't describing a number.

He was acknowledging my right to decide.

I noticed the difference.

I wondered whether he did.

I looked down at the page.

"What does fair mean to you now?"

Todd took a moment before answering.

"I don't think I can decide that by myself."

I looked up.

That was a better answer than I expected.

Not because it solved anything.

Because it left room for me.

Nine days earlier, there hadn't seemed to be much room.

There had been a basement room, certainly.

A small window.

A place for my belongings.

But there hadn't been much room for my opinion.

I almost smiled at the thought.

It wasn't funny.

Still, the difference struck me.

A family could make physical space for someone without making space for what that person wanted.

I hadn't understood that before.

Or perhaps I had understood it and simply hadn't wanted to say it aloud.

Todd looked toward Michelle.

She was watching us quietly.

I couldn't tell what she thought of his answer.

Her eyes were still tired.

I wanted to ask her what she wanted from this conversation.

Then I stopped myself.

I already knew part of what she had wanted.

She had wanted me to consider living with them.

The difficulty wasn't that her wishes were unknown.

The difficulty was that mine had barely been considered.

I didn't need to turn the conversation back toward everyone else's needs before finishing my own thoughts.

I looked at the pad again.

"The money is one thing."

Todd listened.

"The babysitting is another."

"Yes."

"And where I live is another."

He nodded.

I waited.

"They were all put together as though they had to be accepted together."

Todd looked down.

"That's how I presented it."

"Yes."

I took a breath.

"I don't know whether any part of it would work for me."

He didn't answer.

"And I don't want to say yes to one thing because I feel guilty about another."

Todd finally sat in the chair he had been holding.

The movement was quiet.

He didn't lean back.

He simply sat and listened.

I found that easier.

I no longer had to look up at him while explaining why the arrangement frightened me.

We were sitting at the same table.

That mattered more than I expected.

I looked at Michelle.

She was close enough now that I could see how tightly she held her hands.

I wanted her to sit too.

But I didn't want to direct every movement in the room.

She would sit when she wanted.

Or she wouldn't.

That was her choice.

The thought made me pause.

Choice.

Such a small word.

It had become the center of everything.

I looked back at Todd.

"When you wrote about my independence, what did you mean?"

He glanced at the legal pad.

"That I hadn't thought enough about how much control you'd be giving up."

I watched him.

"Control over what?"

He thought for a moment.

"Your money. Your time. Your privacy."

I nodded.

Those were the things he'd written.

But hearing them aloud gave them more weight.

It was one thing to see words on paper.

It was another to hear someone acknowledge what those words meant.

Todd continued.

"I was concentrating on making the arrangement work for our household."

I looked at him.

"And not enough on whether it would work for you."

That was the truth I had been waiting to hear.

Not that I was right about everything.

Not that Todd and Michelle were wrong about needing help.

Just that an arrangement involving my life could not be considered fair if I had no meaningful part in designing it.

I looked down at my hands.

For nine days, I had worried about seeming difficult.

Now I wondered why asking to participate in a decision about my own future had felt difficult at all.

I knew the answer, at least partly.

Michelle was my daughter.

And I loved her.

I didn't want to disappoint her.

I didn't want her to think I was rejecting her generosity.

I didn't want Todd to believe I expected special treatment.

Most of all, I didn't want the grandchildren to become something we argued about.

But refusing to discuss the problem wouldn't protect those relationships.

It would only leave me carrying resentment I didn't want.

I looked at Todd.

"I don't want the children to become part of a bargain."

He nodded.

"They shouldn't."

"I want to spend time with them because we're family."

"I understand."

"And I don't want every visit to feel like I'm completing a requirement."

His expression changed.

He looked ashamed.

I hadn't said it to embarrass him.

Still, I could see how it sounded.

Four days of babysitting.

A condition attached to a place to live.

It had been presented as practical.

But once I heard myself describe it, I understood why I had felt uncomfortable.

I looked toward Michelle.

"I never wanted to make time with them complicated."

She looked at me.

"I know, Mom."

Her voice was soft.

I believed she wanted that to be true.

I wanted it too.

But wanting something didn't guarantee it.

We would have to be more careful than we had been.

Not with the children themselves.

With the expectations we placed around them.

I turned back to the paper.

The heading about what I would be giving up remained visible.

It bothered me that Todd had needed to write it down before any of us could discuss it properly.

But I was grateful he had.

I could hold both feelings.

That was something I was learning.

I could appreciate an apology and still be hurt.

I could recognize an effort and still need time.

I could love my family and still question what they wanted.

None of those things canceled the others.

I took a breath.

"I don't want to punish you for the first conversation."

Todd shook his head.

"I don't think you are."

"I also don't want to pretend it didn't happen."

"I wouldn't ask you to."

I nodded.

For the moment, that was enough.

I didn't need another calculation.

I didn't need another explanation about the mortgage.

I didn't need someone to decide what I could afford.

I needed the freedom to think.

Todd glanced at the pad.

"Would you rather keep that?"

I looked down.

I hadn't expected the question.

The paper belonged to him.

He had written the calculations.

He had brought it into my kitchen.

I looked at the four items again.

There was something comforting about seeing my concerns acknowledged in someone else's handwriting.

But I didn't want to become dependent on the paper either.

I didn't need Todd's written permission to have privacy.

I didn't need his calculations to prove that my retirement money mattered.

Those things were true whether he understood them or not.

I placed my hand flat on the page.

"I'd like to look at it a little longer."

Todd nodded.

"That's fine."

I felt relieved.

Not because he had given me permission.

Because he hadn't tried to hurry me.

I looked toward Michelle.

She was quiet.

I couldn't tell whether the conversation had helped her.

I hoped it had.

But I wasn't going to decide that for her.

For once, I wanted each of us to be responsible for what we actually felt.

Not what someone else assumed we should feel.

I looked back at Todd.

"Thank you for coming here and explaining."

He nodded.

"I'm sorry it took me this long."

I felt those words settle.

Nine days.

Not forever.

Not an enormous stretch of time.

But long enough for me to question my worth as a mother.

Long enough to wonder whether my retirement belonged partly to someone else.

Long enough to become afraid that saying no would hurt people I loved.

I couldn't pretend those days hadn't mattered.

But I didn't need to use them as a weapon either.

I could simply remember them.

And allow them to guide how carefully I made my next decision.

I looked at the yellow legal pad.

The figures hadn't changed.

The circumstances hadn't magically become easier.

But one thing was different.

The original offer had been presented as a complete arrangement.

Now it was something that could be questioned.

Including by me.

I leaned back in my chair.

"I don't have an answer today."

Todd looked at me.

"That's all right."

Michelle nodded quietly.

I looked at both of them.

"And I don't want to give one just because we're all uncomfortable."

Neither objected.

I felt the pressure in my chest ease a little.

Not completely.

But enough.

For nine days, I had been trying to decide whether accepting the basement would make me a good mother.

Now I understood that wasn't the question I needed to answer.

I needed to decide whether the arrangement was right for my life.

Those were different questions.

And I wasn't going to confuse them again.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: I Looked
