I said.

Todd waited.

"Eight hundred dollars."

He lowered his eyes.

"I know."

"I'd look at it in my mind and wonder whether I was being unreasonable."

"You weren't."

I shook my head.

"Please don't answer too quickly."

He became quiet.

I took a breath.

"I don't want you to tell me I was right just because you feel bad now."

Todd looked up.

"All right."

"I want you to understand why I had trouble with it."

He nodded.

I looked at the page again.

"The amount wasn't the only problem."

"I understand."

"It was that the amount had already been decided."

Todd didn't interrupt.

"And the babysitting had already been decided."

I paused.

"And the room had already been chosen."

The kitchen went quiet.

I could hear Michelle shift near the doorway.

I didn't turn.

I was afraid that if I looked at her too long, I would lose the courage to continue.

I had spent nine days putting her feelings ahead of my own.

I wasn't going to stop loving my daughter.

I wasn't going to stop caring whether she was hurt.

But for once, I needed to finish explaining something before trying to make everyone else comfortable.

"You had worked everything out," I said.

Todd glanced at his hands.

"That's true."

"And I was supposed to decide whether to accept it."

"Yes."

I looked straight at him.

"But nobody had really asked me what kind of life I wanted."

He didn't answer immediately.

Then he nodded.

"No. We didn't."

That was the first time I felt myself stop preparing for an argument.

I had expected him to explain.

To tell me why eight hundred dollars made sense.

To remind me that the house had expenses.

To point out that four days with the grandchildren would be good for everyone.

But he didn't.

He simply acknowledged what I had said.

I didn't know why that affected me so much.

Maybe because I had been waiting for someone to hear me.

Not agree with everything.

Not solve everything.

Just hear me.

I looked at the legal pad.

"That basement window."

Todd raised his eyes.

"What about it?"

I paused.

I wasn't sure how to explain.

There was nothing wrong with a small window by itself.

Plenty of people lived in rooms that weren't perfect.

I knew that.

But when I pictured myself moving into that basement, the window was what I remembered.

It made the room feel separate.

It made me wonder how much of the house would actually feel like home.

And how much of my life would be spent trying not to interfere with everyone else's routines.

"I kept thinking about it," I said.

Todd listened.

"The room?"

"Yes."

He waited.

"I know it's only a room."

I looked down.

"But I didn't want to feel as though I was being fitted into whatever space was left."

The words sounded harsher aloud than they had in my head.

I almost took them back.

Then I looked at the pad.

Privacy.

Independence.

Retirement money.

My time with the grandchildren.

Those things were written there because Todd had recognized that they mattered.

I wasn't going to apologize for mentioning them.

Todd rubbed one hand against the other.

"I didn't think about it that way."

I nodded.

"I know."

That was the problem.

He hadn't.

And I hadn't known how to make him.

Michelle made a small sound near the door.

I looked toward her.

She had lowered her head again.

For a moment, I wanted to go to her.

I wanted to tell her not to cry.

I wanted to put my arms around her and make the whole conversation less painful.

But there was a yellow legal pad between us.

And I knew that if I pretended nothing had happened, I would only carry the same hurt home with me again.

So I stayed seated.

Todd glanced toward Michelle, then back at me.

"I'm not asking you to pretend the first conversation was all right."

I looked at him.

"Good."

The word came out more firmly than I expected.

I felt embarrassed.

Then I realized I didn't need to.

He had brought the pad to my house.

He had said the original arrangement was wrong.

I hadn't forced him to say those things.

He had chosen to come here.

And I had a right to respond honestly.

I picked up the pad again.

The list of household expenses was still there.

I understood why he had written those numbers.

They were part of his thinking.

They showed how he had reached the original amount.

But they also showed how much attention he had given to one side of the arrangement.

There were figures for water.

Figures for electricity.

Figures for groceries.

And only afterward had he made room for what mattered to me.

I looked at him.

"Why wasn't this second list there the first time?"

He looked at the paper.

"I should have made it before we talked to you."

That answer was simple.

No excuse.

No attempt to explain away the omission.

For a moment, I felt relieved.

Then I felt tired.

Because an apology didn't give me back those nine days.

It didn't erase the worry.

It didn't change the fact that I had questioned myself for wanting ordinary things.

I wasn't angry enough to ignore what Todd had done.

But I wasn't ready to reward him for finally seeing something I had been living with all along.

I set the pad down.

"Thank you for writing it."

He nodded.

"I mean that," I said.

"I know."

"But I still need to think."

Todd looked at me.

"Of course."

I looked toward Michelle.

She had finally raised her eyes.

I could see how much she wanted the conversation to become easier.

I wanted that too.

More than anything, I wanted us to be able to speak without someone feeling rejected.

But I had learned something during those nine days.

Avoiding a difficult conversation didn't make the difficulty disappear.

Sometimes it simply left one person carrying it alone.

I had been carrying it alone.

And I didn't want to keep doing that.

I rested my hand on the pad.

"I need you both to understand something."

Michelle looked at me.

Todd stood still.

"I love those children."

Neither of them interrupted.

"That has never been in question."

I paused.

"But loving them doesn't mean every day of my week belongs to somebody else."

Todd lowered his head.

Michelle pressed her hands together.

I took another breath.

"I want to be their grandmother because I'm their grandmother."

My voice became quieter.

"Not because I owe four days of work in exchange for somewhere to sleep."

Nobody spoke.

I looked back down at the paper.

That was the difference I had struggled to explain.

And now that I had finally said it, I didn't feel triumphant.

I felt tired.

And sad.

But underneath those feelings, there was something steadier.

I had told the truth.

Todd looked at the last item on the pad.

Then he looked at me.

"That's what I should have understood."

I nodded.

I didn't say he was forgiven.

I didn't tell him everything was fine.

I simply left my hand on the yellow paper and allowed his words to remain there.

For once, I didn't try to make the silence comfortable.

I had spent nine days wondering whether I was wrong for wanting a choice.

Now I knew the choice itself mattered.

And I wasn't going to pretend otherwise.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: When I Finally Spoke About My Retirement Money, I Realized How Much of My Fear Had Been Hidden Behind One Number

I kept looking at the last sentence on Todd's yellow legal pad.
