3 – My Daughter Stood Crying by the Door While Her Husband Explained Why His Carefully Calculated Offer Had Been Wrong

I looked at Michelle before touching the pad again.

She was still standing near the door.

Her coat remained on.

Her hands were clasped so tightly that I could see the tension in them.

I wanted her to sit down.

I wanted to ask her to take off her coat.

Those were ordinary things a mother wanted to say when her child came into the house.

But nothing about this visit felt ordinary.

Todd was speaking for himself.

And Michelle was letting him.

I didn't know whether that was because they had agreed he should explain or because she couldn't find the words.

I only knew she looked exhausted.

I hadn't seen her like that since we lost Dale.

The comparison hurt.

I wished it hadn't come to mind.

I wished the sight of my own daughter standing in my doorway didn't remind me of a time when our family had been carrying so much sadness.

I wished I could simply be angry.

Anger might have been easier.

Instead, I felt worried about her and hurt by her at the same time.

I didn't know what to do with both feelings.

Todd rested his fingers against the yellow pad.

"I need to say the rest of it," he told me.

I nodded.

He took a moment.

"When I put the amount together, I thought I was making things straightforward."

I remembered that word.

Straightforward.

It was exactly how he had treated the arrangement.

An amount for living expenses.

Four days of childcare.

A place to stay.

It had sounded like something that could be settled by deciding whether the arithmetic was correct.

But the numbers didn't tell the entire story.

And neither did the basement.

I thought again of its small window.

It wasn't that I believed every room had to be large and bright to be a home.

I wasn't asking for something grand.

The window stayed in my mind because it represented what I was being asked to accept.

A different kind of space.

A different kind of life.

A different degree of privacy.

Maybe I would have been comfortable there.

Maybe I wouldn't.

I had never been given enough room in the conversation to find out.

The decision had come wrapped inside the practical details.

Todd looked toward Michelle for a moment.

Then he turned back.

"I told myself we'd be helping you."

That one hurt.

Because I had told myself the same thing.

I had spent nine days trying to hold on to the idea that Michelle was offering me something generous.

A home.

A place near family.

A chance to be around my grandchildren.

There were good things in that picture.

I didn't want to erase them just because the terms had upset me.

I didn't want to turn my daughter into someone who had done nothing but hurt me.

I knew she was more than this one conversation.

I knew Todd was more than a page of figures.

And I knew my grandchildren were innocent of whatever their parents and I had failed to understand.

That was part of why the situation had been so difficult.

There wasn't one simple feeling that explained it.

I was grateful for the offer.

I was also troubled by the conditions.

I loved my family.

I also wanted a life that belonged to me.

Those things could all be true.

For nine days, I had acted as though I had to choose just one.

Todd continued.

"But I didn't think enough about what we would be asking you to leave behind."

I looked at him.

Something about that sentence made me pay closer attention.

Leave behind.

Those were not the words he had used when he'd explained the household expenses.

Back then, everything had been about what I would receive.

A room.

A place in their home.

Time with the grandchildren.

Now he was speaking about the other side.

The things I might lose.

I glanced at Michelle.

She wiped near one eye.

I didn't know whether she was crying because she regretted what had happened or because the conversation was painful.

Maybe both.

I didn't ask.

Todd had started something important.

I needed him to finish.

"I kept thinking about the extra cost to us," he said.

He paused.

"I didn't think about the cost to you."

I felt my throat tighten.

For nine days, I had searched for a way to explain that feeling without sounding ungrateful.

Now he had said it in a sentence.

The cost to me.

Not just money.

Though the money mattered.

Eight hundred dollars each month was not an imaginary amount.

It would come from my retirement funds.

Money I had to think about carefully because I couldn't treat retirement as though it were an ordinary week when I could simply make more time or start over.

I had already spent enough of my life taking care of responsibilities.

I didn't resent those years.

I didn't regret being a mother.

I didn't regret being a grandmother.

But I had thought that growing older would give me some right to decide how I used what remained of my time.

Not every day.

Not every detail.

Just enough to feel that my choices were still mine.

Todd rubbed his palms along his trousers.

He seemed embarrassed.

I noticed that too.

He was not behaving like someone pleased with the plan he had brought me.

He wasn't trying to persuade me.

He wasn't waiting for me to agree that his original calculations were fair.

He was explaining how he had reached a decision and why he no longer trusted it.

That mattered.

I couldn't pretend it didn't.

But I couldn't let it settle everything either.

A person could acknowledge a mistake without fully understanding its effect.

And I had spent nine days living with the effect.

I had thought about the basement room when I woke up.

I had thought about the number when I tried to decide whether I was being unreasonable.

I had thought about the babysitting schedule while picturing the grandchildren.

I hadn't wanted their faces to become reminders of an obligation.

I was ashamed that the thought had even crossed my mind.

They deserved a grandmother who enjoyed being with them.

Not someone who worried that affection had become part of a financial agreement.

And I deserved to love them without having that love measured against a room in the basement.

That was what had bothered me.

The way ordinary affection had been given a place in a calculation.

Todd touched the top page.

"I put everything in here because I needed to look at it properly."

He looked down at his own writing.

"I wanted to see what I hadn't been seeing."

I studied his face.

He was serious.

His voice was quiet.

There was none of the certainty I remembered from nine days earlier.

The difference was noticeable.

Back then, he had seemed to know exactly what the arrangement should be.

Now he appeared unsure how much damage his certainty had caused.

I wondered whether Michelle had told him.

I wondered whether he had worked it out himself.

I wondered what had been said in their home after our first conversation.

But I didn't know any of that.

And I wasn't going to put words into my daughter's mouth.

I looked at her again.

"Michelle."

She lifted her face.

For a moment, we just looked at each other.

I could see how tired she was.

I wanted to say something that would make the tension disappear.

I wanted to tell her we could forget the whole thing.

But I knew we couldn't.

Not honestly.

So I asked a smaller question.

"Are you listening to what he's saying?"

She nodded.

"Yes, Mom."

Her voice was quiet.

I waited, but she didn't add anything.

I didn't push her.

It was enough for the moment that she had answered me.

Todd stayed beside the chair.

I turned back toward him.

"You understand why I had trouble with it?"

He took a breath.

"I understand more than I did."

That answer felt different from a quick yes.

He wasn't claiming to know everything.

He wasn't asking me to agree that the problem had been solved.

He was admitting that there had been something he failed to see.

I appreciated that.

Even though I was still hurting.

Todd slid the legal pad toward the center of the table.

"I want you to read what I put down."

I looked at it.

The top corner had shifted slightly under his hand.

I could see lines of writing.

Figures.

Words.

I had spent nine days dreading another discussion of numbers.

Now I was about to read a set of calculations Todd had made after admitting that the first ones had been wrong.

It was strange how much I wanted to know what he had written.

And how much I feared feeling disappointed again.

I finally pulled the chair closer.

I sat.

Todd remained standing.

Michelle stayed by the door.

And I took the legal pad into my hands.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: I Finally Read the Yellow Legal
