2 – I Had Tried to Convince Myself Eight Hundred Dollars Was Reasonable, but the Four Days of Babysitting Still Troubled Me

Todd didn't immediately hand me the pad.

He kept it near the edge of the table.

I could tell that he had more to say.

And I wasn't going to interrupt him.

Nine days earlier, I had struggled to find my own words.

Now I wanted to hear every one of his.

He looked at me.

"When I figured out that monthly amount, I was only thinking about the house."

I looked at him.

"The costs?"

"Yes."

He nodded.

"The expenses we already pay, and what I thought would change with you living there."

I remembered how neatly everything had been presented.

That was the trouble with figures written on paper.

They looked certain.

They gave the impression that every question had already been answered.

Eight hundred dollars was eight hundred dollars.

There was no confusion about the number itself.

It was what the number meant that I couldn't settle.

I had never believed that living in someone else's home should cost nothing.

I understood electricity.

Water.

Groceries.

A mortgage didn't disappear because the person helping with it was family.

Those things were real.

I had no reason to pretend otherwise.

But I was real, too.

My retirement money was real.

My need for privacy was real.

And my wish to decide what I did with my days hadn't vanished just because my daughter had offered me a basement room.

Todd continued.

"I thought that if I made the costs clear, no one could say the arrangement was unfair."

I looked toward Michelle.

She kept her eyes on the floor.

I wondered what she had thought when Todd first worked out those figures.

I wondered whether she had questioned them.

Or whether she had simply trusted that he knew what he was doing.

I didn't ask.

The questions were in my mind, but the answers weren't.

And I had already spent too much time trying to guess what other people were thinking.

Todd touched the corner of the pad.

"I was treating everything like something that could be divided up."

I understood what he meant.

A share of the bills.

A share of the house.

A share of the responsibility for the children.

I suppose there was a kind of order in that.

There was even something reassuring about the idea of everyone contributing.

But there was a difference between contributing freely and being told what your contribution would be.

I hadn't understood how important that difference was until it was taken away from me.

I thought of Dale.

Not of anything he had said about this situation.

He hadn't been there to see it.

I thought of his funeral.

And how quickly the word independence could begin to feel complicated when the person who had shared your life was gone.

Michelle had looked worn down after his funeral.

I remembered that.

It was why her appearance at my front door troubled me so much.

She looked tired now.

The same kind of tired.

I wanted to ask what had happened over the last nine days.

But Todd was still talking.

"And then there was the babysitting."

I straightened a little.

He noticed.

"I know," he said quietly.

That was an unusual thing to hear from him.

Because I hadn't said anything.

I hadn't reminded him about the schedule.

He had brought it up himself.

I waited.

"I told myself that four days with the children would make the whole thing work."

His voice became quieter.

"I thought of it as another part of the agreement."

I looked down at my hands.

Four days.

I had repeated those words in my head so often that they had begun to sound like a calendar I didn't remember agreeing to.

I loved my grandchildren.

I wished that had been enough to explain why the request hurt.

It wasn't.

I didn't want to become someone who counted every minute spent with them.

I didn't want to make them feel as though their grandmother needed a reason to visit.

I certainly didn't want them to think I resented being around them.

That wasn't the feeling.

The feeling was that I would no longer be choosing.

And that frightened me more than I liked to admit.

A visit was one thing.

Being available on a fixed schedule was another.

Four days every week wasn't a small favor tucked into an afternoon.

It was a large piece of a person's life.

I could love those children with everything I had and still want to decide when I cared for them.

For nine days, I had felt guilty even thinking that.

Looking back, I wished I had given myself permission to think it sooner.

Todd moved his hand away from the pad.

"I should have asked you what you wanted."

I raised my eyes.

He continued before I could answer.

"I should have asked if you even wanted that kind of schedule."

Michelle let out a small breath.

I heard it from near the door.

It made me want to turn toward her.

But I was afraid that if I saw her crying again, I would forget what I needed to say.

That had always been difficult for me.

My daughter's pain could make my own concerns seem unimportant.

I knew it wasn't fair.

I knew a mother couldn't solve every problem by ignoring her own needs.

But knowing something and acting on it weren't the same.

Todd glanced at the chair.

He still didn't sit.

"I didn't give you much room to tell us what you thought."

I wanted to say that I had been right there.

That I could have opened my mouth.

That I wasn't helpless.

Because that was true.

I had choices.

I had a voice.

But I also knew what happened when someone you loved presented a plan that appeared to depend on your agreement.

You began thinking about the consequences of refusing before you thought about whether the plan was right for you.

You worried about hurting them.

You worried about looking ungrateful.

You worried that saying no would be remembered long after the reasons for saying it had been forgotten.

That was what I had done.

I had thought about Michelle.

I had thought about Todd.

I had thought about the grandchildren.

Then, somewhere near the end of that list, I had tried to think about myself.

And I hadn't liked how selfish that felt.

Todd's voice brought me back.

"I made it sound like you should accept the terms because we'd already worked them out."

I looked at him for a moment.

There it was.

The part I had been unable to explain.

Not the amount by itself.

Not the basement alone.

Not even the babysitting.

It was that the decision seemed to have been made before I was invited into it.

And I had been expected to feel grateful for the finished arrangement.

I remembered Todd looking at the salt shaker during our earlier conversation.

I had wondered then whether he felt uncomfortable.

I had wondered whether he knew how hard it was for me to hear all of those conditions at once.

But he had kept talking about what was fair.

And I had kept listening.

Now he looked directly at me.

"I see why that was wrong."

I wanted to believe him.

I really did.

But an apology could be easy to say after enough time had passed.

Understanding was harder.

I needed to know whether he understood the part of the arrangement that couldn't be written as an expense.

The part that involved me.

My days.

My choices.

The small amount of control I wanted to keep over my own life.

I looked at the legal pad again.

Todd noticed.

"That's why I wrote this."

I reached toward it, then stopped.

I wasn't afraid of paper.

I was afraid of discovering that he'd simply rearranged the same numbers.

That he had found a different way to explain why eight hundred dollars and four days were reasonable.

I wasn't ready for another discussion in which my life became a calculation.

Todd seemed to understand my hesitation.

He moved the pad closer.

"No," he said softly, as though answering the worry I hadn't voiced. "This isn't another offer."

I looked up.

He held my gaze.

"It's what I missed the first time."

I sat back.

That was when I decided I would read it.

Not because I had forgiven him.

Because I needed to know whether he had finally understood what the original arrangement would have cost me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: My Daughter Stood Crying by the Door While Her Husband Explained Why His
