I want you to open the door."

"We need to talk."

"We were talking before you locked me in here."

There was a pause.

I waited for her to acknowledge what she had done.

Instead, she said I needed to listen to her.

I closed my eyes.

I had spent years trying to listen to Lauren, even when I disagreed with her.

I had listened when she talked about the house.

I had listened when she said managing the property was becoming complicated.

I had listened when she suggested that putting everything in her name would make life easier for both of us.

But listening had never meant agreeing.

I had told her that more than once.

Now she was using the locked door to make the difference between those two things disappear.

"Lauren, I don't want to argue with you."

"Then stop fighting me."

"I'm not fighting you. I am asking you to let me out."

She didn't answer immediately.

I could hear her shifting on the other side.

I wondered whether she was standing close to the handle or farther down the hallway.

I wondered whether she understood how frightened I had become.

"Please," I said. "Open the door."

She told me I needed to think about what she had proposed.

I looked around the room.

My bed was against the wall.

A chair stood near the window.

My jacket hung where I had left it earlier.

Everything was familiar, but I could no longer look at any of it without thinking about the door.

"I have thought about it," I said.

"Then you know why I'm asking."

"I know what you're asking. I still don't agree."

"You never agree."

I took a slow breath.

"That doesn't give you the right to lock me in here."

She said she was trying to help me.

I had heard those words before.

They had appeared in nearly every conversation about the property.

She wanted to help me manage the house.

She wanted to help me organize my papers.

She wanted to help me avoid complications later.

The word had always sounded gentle when she used it.

Standing inside the locked room, I finally understood how little comfort it offered.

"Helping me would mean opening the door," I said.

She became quiet.

I waited.

I thought she might turn the handle and step inside, embarrassed by what had happened.

I imagined her looking at me and admitting that she had gone too far.

Instead, she said she needed me to stop being stubborn.

I lowered my hand from the door.

"Lauren, I am not signing anything because you have locked me in a room."

"I didn't say you had to sign anything right now."

"Then let me out."

She didn't respond.

I heard her footsteps move away.

I stood there listening until I could no longer hear them.

The silence made the room feel smaller.

I walked to the bed and sat down.

My hands rested on my knees.

I tried to make sense of the person I had just spoken to.

Lauren was my daughter.

I remembered when she had been small enough to reach for my hand whenever we crossed a street.

I remembered how she used to ask me questions about the things I did at work.

She had wanted to know why I kept copies of contracts and why I never threw away an original document before checking it twice.

I had explained that papers could matter long after the conversation that produced them had been forgotten.

Back then, she had listened with genuine interest.

Now, the papers had become the center of a disagreement I could not seem to resolve.

I wondered when the change had begun.

Perhaps it had happened gradually.

Perhaps I had ignored too many small signs because I wanted to believe that my daughter and I would always be able to speak honestly.

I stood again and approached the door.

"Lauren, can you hear me?"

There was no answer.

I knocked twice.

"I need to use the phone."

Silence.

"My phone isn't in here."

I waited, hoping she would understand what I meant.

I had no way to contact anyone from where I stood.

Even if I knew exactly whom to call, I couldn't reach them.

I had never imagined needing to explain that to my own daughter.

I returned to the window.

I looked outside, searching for something ordinary to hold my attention.

The yard was still.

The familiar view should have comforted me.

Instead, I felt separated from it.

The world outside the glass continued as it always had.

I was the only person who knew I couldn't leave.

I wondered how long Lauren intended to keep me there.

I also wondered whether she believed the time would make a difference.

Perhaps she thought that after enough hours, I would become tired of refusing.

Perhaps she imagined that I would agree to whatever she wanted simply to end the situation.

I couldn't know what she was thinking.

I could only judge what she was doing.

She had asked me to surrender control over my property.

I had refused.

She had locked me in my room.

That was the fact I could not ignore.

I walked back to the door.

"Lauren, I love you."

The words came out more quietly than I expected.

I wasn't trying to bargain with her.

I wanted her to remember that our disagreement did not have to become something worse.

"I love you," I repeated. "But you need to open this door."

For a moment, I thought I heard her stop outside.

I waited for her answer.

She finally spoke.

"You need to think about us, Dad."

I rested my forehead against the door.

"I am thinking about us."

"Then why won't you listen?"

"I have listened. You want the house in your name, and I don't want to transfer it."

She said I was making everything difficult.

I told her the decision belonged to me.

That seemed to upset her more than anything else I had said.

She accused me of refusing to trust her.

I didn't know how to answer without starting the same argument again.

Trust was not the same as surrender.

Love was not the same as permission.

And being someone's father did not mean I had to give away everything I owned to prove that I cared.

I kept those thoughts to myself.

I was afraid that any explanation would simply give her another reason to keep the door locked.

"Please let me out," I said.

She didn't answer.

I heard her footsteps fade again.

This time, I did not follow them with another request.

I sat down on the bed and looked at the door.

I had spent years trying to find the right words to make Lauren understand my position.

I had explained the papers.

I had explained the property.

I had explained why I wanted to keep the original documents where I could reach them.

None of those explanations had changed her mind.

And now I was beginning to understand that the problem was not a lack of explanation.

I had already given her my answer.

She simply didn't want to accept it.

I sat quietly for several minutes.

My fear remained, but beneath it I felt something beginning to settle.

I could love Lauren without agreeing with her.

I could care about her future without surrendering my own choices.

And I could refuse her request without making myself responsible for what she chose to do in response.

I stood and approached the door once more.

"Lauren, I am asking you one last time for now. Open the door."

No answer came.

I returned to the bed.

I had no idea when she would come back.

But I knew that I could not make my freedom depend on finding a sentence she was willing to hear.

I needed to think about what I could do next.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: I Realized My Daughter Was Waiting for Me to Give In, but the House and Its Documents Were Still Mine

I tried the handle again, even though I already knew what would happen.
