I haven't been willing to sign away the house."

She looked at me.

"That's all you can think about."

"No. It's what you keep asking me about."

She shook her head.

I waited for her to say something more.

Instead, she asked whether I wanted another cup of coffee.

I told her I had already had enough.

She stood up.

"I'll get some water."

She walked toward the kitchen.

I stayed in the living room.

I could hear the cupboard open and close.

Then the sound of a glass being set on the counter.

She returned with water and sat down.

For several minutes, we talked about other things.

She asked whether I had been sleeping better.

I said I had.

She asked whether I needed help with errands.

I told her I could manage.

She nodded.

I wanted to believe she was finally accepting my answers.

Then she asked whether I had changed anything in the house recently.

I frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"Have you moved anything around?"

"Not really. Why?"

She shrugged.

"I was just wondering."

I studied her face.

She looked calm.

There was no obvious reason to think the question meant anything.

Still, I couldn't help remembering how often she had asked about my office and the documents.

I decided not to start another argument.

"If I move something, I'll let you know," I said.

She didn't respond.

A few minutes later, she stood up and asked to use the bathroom.

I pointed down the hallway.

She walked away.

I remained seated.

I heard a door close.

Then the house became quiet.

I looked toward the hallway.

I couldn't see her from where I sat.

I told myself there was no reason to watch her every movement.

She was my daughter.

She had spent years walking through that house without needing permission.

I had no reason to turn every visit into an inspection.

I picked up my book.

I read the same paragraph twice without understanding it.

Then I heard footsteps.

Lauren returned to the living room.

She stood beside the chair and looked at me.

"Dad, can you come with me for a minute?"

I put the book down.

"Where?"

"I want to show you something."

I stood.

I followed her into the hallway.

She walked toward my room.

I stopped just outside the doorway.

"What is it?"

"Just come in for a moment."

I hesitated.

I had no reason to refuse.

It was my room.

I knew every piece of furniture in it.

I stepped inside.

Lauren remained near the doorway.

I turned toward her.

"What did you want to show me?"

She didn't answer.

Instead, she moved away from the doorway.

I heard a sound behind me.

A small, hard click.

I turned.

The door was closed.

For a moment, I didn't understand why that mattered.

Then I walked toward it and reached for the handle.

It wouldn't open.

I tried again.

The handle moved, but the door stayed shut.

I looked at Lauren through the narrow opening near the frame, trying to understand what she had done.

"Lauren?"

She stood on the other side.

She didn't look surprised.

She didn't look confused.

She looked as though she had made a decision and was waiting for me to accept it.

I pulled the handle again.

The door remained closed.

I felt my stomach drop.

"Open the door."

She said nothing.

I knocked once.

Then again, harder.

"Lauren, open this door."

I heard her move away.

Her footsteps traveled down the hallway.

I stood there, staring at the door.

I couldn't make sense of what had happened.

A moment earlier, I had been sitting in the living room, believing we were trying to repair our relationship.

Now I was standing inside my own room, unable to leave.

I tried the handle again.

Nothing.

I called her name.

There was no answer.

I knocked hard enough that my hand hurt.

"Lauren!"

The house remained quiet.

I stood with my palm against the door.

I had spent weeks worrying about the black key, the forgotten room, and the documents that proved I owned the house.

I had believed that if I kept those things safe, I could protect myself from whatever my daughter wanted.

I had been thinking about the wrong kind of lock.

The door in front of me was closed.

My daughter had closed it.

And I was the one who couldn't get out.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: My Daughter Kept the Door Locked While I Tried to Understand How Our Disagreement Had Become a Prison

I woke up the next morning determined to stop worrying.
