The rooms. The way everything is arranged."

I took a sip of coffee.

"I like it the way it is."

She nodded.

"I suppose you're used to it."

"I am."

She looked down at her cup.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she asked whether I had ever considered letting someone else manage the property.

I put my cup on the table.

"Lauren, we've already discussed this."

"I know."

"Then why are we discussing it again?"

She rubbed her thumb along the handle of her cup.

"Because I don't think you understand how things might turn out."

I felt the same uneasiness I had felt during our earlier conversations.

"What do you think will happen?"

She looked at me.

"I don't know."

"Then what exactly are you asking me to prepare for?"

She didn't answer.

I waited.

Finally, she said she didn't want me to regret my decisions.

I told her I understood that she might disagree with me.

But I had made my decision, and I expected her to respect it.

She looked away.

I could see that she was upset.

I was upset too.

But I had stopped believing that another explanation would solve the problem.

We finished our coffee in silence.

Afterward, Lauren stood and said she wanted to use the bathroom.

I told her where it was, though she already knew.

She walked down the hallway.

I remained in the living room.

I heard a door open and close.

A few minutes passed.

Then I heard her footsteps returning.

She came into the room and picked up her handbag.

"I should get going."

I stood.

"All right."

She walked toward the front door.

I followed her.

At the doorway, she turned and looked at me.

"Dad, I'm trying to do what's best."

I felt a sudden sadness.

"I wish you'd tell me what you really want."

Her face changed.

For a moment, she looked almost frightened.

Then the expression disappeared.

"I've told you."

She stepped outside.

I watched her walk to her car.

She opened the driver's door, put her handbag inside, and sat down.

Before starting the engine, she looked toward the house.

Our eyes met through the window.

Then she drove away.

I closed the door.

I stood in the hallway for a while, trying to understand why that final glance had unsettled me.

I couldn't find an answer.

I went into the kitchen and washed the cups.

Then I returned to the office.

I worked until late afternoon.

When I finished, I walked toward the forgotten room.

I had no particular reason to go there.

I simply wanted to check that everything remained as I had left it.

The black key turned in the lock.

I opened the door.

The room was quiet.

The folders remained in place.

I checked the original business documents, the old contracts, the financial statements, and the property papers.

Everything appeared to be accounted for.

I put the documents back and locked the door.

As I walked away, I realized how much of my attention had become focused on protecting things that had never been in danger before.

The papers were old.

The house was familiar.

The keys had been sitting in their container for years.

Only my relationship with Lauren had changed.

I wanted to believe that change could still be repaired.

I wanted to believe she would eventually understand that refusing to transfer the house wasn't a rejection of her.

It was simply my decision about my own property.

That evening, I sat at the kitchen table and wrote a few notes about the household bills I needed to pay.

I didn't write anything about Lauren.

I didn't want every part of my life to become a record of our disagreement.

I put the notes in a drawer and finished my dinner.

The house was quiet again.

I locked the doors before going to bed.

I checked the side entrance, then the front door.

Everything was secure.

I turned off the hallway light and went to my room.

For a while, I lay awake thinking about the conversation we had just had.

I wondered whether I should have asked her to explain herself one more time.

I wondered whether I had become too suspicious.

Then I remembered how she had reacted whenever I asked a direct question.

I remembered the folder she had brought.

I remembered her repeated requests to take control of the property.

I remembered the way she had looked toward the hallway during her visits.

Those memories didn't prove that she intended to hurt me.

But they reminded me that I had good reasons to protect my boundaries.

I fell asleep eventually.

The following morning, I woke up and began my routine.

Coffee.

Mail.

Office.

The same things I had done for years.

I had no reason to believe that the day would be different.

I didn't know that the next time I would face a serious problem in the house, the documents and keys I had worked so hard to protect would not be the only things that mattered.

I believed I could handle a disagreement by staying calm, keeping my records safe, and refusing to surrender what belonged to me.

I still believed that if Lauren and I reached another difficult moment, I would be able to walk away from the conversation whenever I chose.

I had never imagined that my ability to leave a room could become part of the problem.

<a
