I'm worried because I don't know what's happening yet."

He considered my answer.

Then he reached for my hand.

I held it.

I had wanted to protect him from my fear all afternoon.

Now I wondered whether pretending not to be frightened had made the room feel stranger to him.

He could see that I was worried.

He could hear it in my voice.

He had watched me look toward the door whenever the officers moved.

There was no point in denying what he already knew.

I could admit that I was scared without making him responsible for comforting me.

That was the important part.

I squeezed his hand gently.

"You don't have to take care of me, sweetheart."

He looked puzzled.

"I'm not."

"I know. I just want you to remember that it's my job to take care of you."

He nodded.

Then he leaned against me again.

I rested my head lightly against his.

The clock ticked above us.

I thought about the morning, when I had hurried Ethan toward the door because I wanted to finish an ordinary task.

I thought about the barber's shop and the sudden change in the room.

I thought about the police arriving and the questions that followed.

I had spent hours trying to identify the moment when I should have understood what was happening.

I couldn't find it.

There had been no clear explanation waiting for me at the beginning of the day.

There had only been a haircut, a child who didn't particularly want one, and a barber who noticed something concerning.

I could not reasonably have known what I did not know.

That realization didn't remove the fear.

It did remove some of the blame I had been placing on myself.

I had been treating the absence of an answer as if it were evidence that I had failed.

It wasn't.

It was evidence that we still needed an answer.

The distinction mattered.

Detective Alvarez returned once more and asked whether I had remembered anything new.

I said no.

She asked whether I had any questions about the arrangements she had explained.

I reviewed my notes and asked her to clarify one detail.

She did.

I thanked her.

Then I put the paper away.

I had stopped adding to it merely because I felt anxious.

I would write something down when I had a real detail to preserve.

I would not write down every fear simply to make it look like information.

That was a small change.

It felt important.

Ethan looked up at me.

"Can we have breakfast at home tomorrow?"

I smiled faintly.

"We can make that plan."

He nodded.

I didn't promise that nothing would interrupt it.

I didn't tell him there was no reason to worry.

I simply acknowledged that he wanted something familiar to look forward to.

That seemed fair.

He rested his head against my shoulder.

I thought about the kitchen table, the breakfast dishes, and the ordinary sound of him asking for something he liked.

I hoped we would have that morning.

I also knew that whatever happened next, we would have to respond to the information available to us.

I could not plan the entire future from where I sat.

I could plan the next step.

That was enough.

The officers continued their work.

I remained beside Ethan.

I listened when he spoke.

I stayed quiet when he wanted quiet.

I answered his questions without pretending to know more than I did.

The fear remained in the house.

But it no longer filled every silence.

For the first time since the barber had stopped cutting, I felt that I was beginning to understand my responsibility.

I was not responsible for producing an explanation.

I was responsible for helping my son through the uncertainty while the explanation was being sought.

I was responsible for being honest about what I knew and careful about what I didn't.

I was responsible for listening without turning every answer into another demand.

And I was responsible for remembering that Ethan was a child, not a problem to solve.

I looked down at him.

His eyes were closed, though he wasn't fully asleep.

I adjusted the blanket over his knees.

He moved closer.

I stayed still so I wouldn't disturb him.

The clock continued ticking.

The house remained unfamiliar in some ways and completely familiar in others.

I still didn't know what the barber had seen.

I still didn't know why the officers had needed to ask so many questions.

I still couldn't tell Ethan when we would understand what had happened.

But I had stopped trying to fill those gaps with guesses.

I would wait for information.

I would listen.

And when the next question came, I would answer it as honestly as I could.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: As the Evening Went On, I Had to Learn the Difference Between Waiting for Answers and Asking My Son to Carry the Weight of My Fear

Ethan began to look sleepy.
