15 – The Unfinished Haircut Kept Returning to My Mind, Reminding Me That the Moment Everything Changed Had Started With Someone Paying Attention

I thought I had stopped replaying the barber's reaction.

Then Ethan ran his fingers through his hair, and I remembered the chair again.

The cape.

The mirror.

The clippers.

The silence.

I could picture the barber standing behind my son, looking at the area I hadn't noticed.

I wondered whether he had hesitated because he was worried about frightening Ethan.

I wondered whether he had recognized something that made him concerned.

I wondered whether he had simply seen something unusual and wanted someone qualified to examine it.

I didn't know.

Every possibility led back to the same unanswered question.

What had he seen?

I sat quietly beside Ethan while he watched television.

I was trying not to let my imagination run ahead of what we knew.

It wasn't easy.

The barber had been the first person to draw attention to the concern.

His reaction had changed the course of our afternoon.

I was grateful that he had stopped.

I was also frightened by what the discovery might mean.

Both feelings remained.

Detective Alvarez approached and asked whether I had any additional information about the shop.

I told her what I could remember.

She asked whether I had a receipt or any record of the visit.

I said I would check.

I went to the place where I kept the small things I collected from ordinary errands.

There were envelopes, folded papers, and a few receipts I hadn't thrown away.

I searched through them carefully.

I found nothing that helped.

I returned to the living room and told the detective.

She thanked me.

I sat down again.

The search had taken only a few minutes, but it had reminded me how little of the afternoon I had thought to preserve.

I hadn't expected to need a record of an ordinary haircut.

Why would I?

I had gone to the shop believing that the biggest decision of the day was how much hair Ethan should have removed.

I had not thought about recording the time or keeping a receipt.

I had simply lived the afternoon.

Now I wished I could retrieve every detail.

But I couldn't.

I needed to stop treating an ordinary lack of preparation as proof that I had failed.

Nobody could anticipate every unexpected event.

I could only work with what I had.

Ethan paused the television.

"Are you going to the barber again?"

The question surprised me.

I looked at him.

"Not right now."

He nodded.

I wondered whether he was thinking about the unfinished haircut or the moment the barber stopped.

I didn't ask.

Instead, I told him that we would work out any future arrangements when we knew what was appropriate.

He accepted that.

Then he returned to the television.

I felt relieved that he had asked a practical question.

It was something I could answer without pretending to understand the entire situation.

Detective Alvarez sat across from us.

She asked whether Ethan had anything he wanted to add about the haircut.

He shook his head.

She didn't push him.

She asked whether he wanted to continue resting while the adults talked.

He said yes.

I thanked her for allowing him the space.

She nodded and explained that it was important for him to feel comfortable while the situation was being assessed.

I looked at my son.

He was still watching the screen.

I hoped that the adults around him would remember that he had a life beyond the concern that had brought the police to our house.

He had interests.

He had routines.

He had worries that might have nothing to do with this afternoon.

I wanted those things to remain part of his life.

I also wanted the adults to take the concern seriously.

Those needs were not in conflict.

We could investigate a question without allowing it to define a child.

I had begun to understand that distinction more clearly.

Detective Alvarez asked whether I had any further questions.

I wanted to ask whether the barber had contacted the police.

I wanted to know whether he had explained why he stopped cutting.

But I had no new information to offer.

I asked instead whether there was anything I needed to do to preserve the details I remembered.

She explained that I should keep my notes and communicate any relevant new information through the appropriate channels.

I agreed.

I placed the folded paper in a safe place.

Then I returned to Ethan.

He had turned the television down.

"Mom, can I ask you something?"

"Yes."

"Do you think the barber was trying to help?"

I looked at him carefully.

I didn't want to dismiss the question.

I also didn't want to assign the barber an intention I couldn't know.

"I think he was concerned enough to stop and tell me that someone should look at it," I said. "I don't know everything he was thinking, but I'm glad he didn't ignore what worried him."

Ethan considered that.

"Okay."

He turned back toward the screen.

I sat beside him.

I was glad he had asked.

It gave me a chance to explain something without inventing a story.

The barber's decision to stop was a fact.

His private thoughts were not.

I could acknowledge the first without pretending to know the second.

That had become a useful way to approach almost everything.

What did I actually know?

What had I observed?

What was I assuming?

I wished I had asked myself those questions earlier.

Perhaps I would have worried less.

Perhaps not.

I was still a mother whose child had become the focus of an unexpected police inquiry.

No amount of careful thinking could make that comfortable.

But careful thinking could prevent me from making the situation more confusing than it already was.

Ethan leaned against me again.

I rested my hand on his shoulder.

The television played softly.

The clock continued ticking.

For a while, I let myself remember the haircut without trying to solve it.

I pictured the ordinary beginning.

Ethan walking into the shop.

The bell above the door.

The barber greeting us.

The chair.

The mirror.

Then I let the memory end where it had ended in real life.

The clippers stopped.

The barber became concerned.

I had no explanation.

That was the point at which the story remained unfinished.

I didn't need to add an imagined ending to make the memory complete.

The truth would have to come from what could actually be established.

Until then, I could remain grateful that someone had paid attention.

I could remain worried about what the concern might mean.

And I could continue caring for my son without deciding what the answer had to be.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: I Had
