I admitted.

The detective listened.

She reminded me that I had been trying to understand an unexpected concern and that what mattered now was continuing to speak with him carefully.

I nodded.

I didn't need someone to tell me that I had handled every moment perfectly.

I hadn't.

I needed to know how to do better.

I asked whether I should stop asking him questions about the mark unless he brought it up.

She explained that I should follow the guidance given to us and avoid repeatedly questioning him in an effort to produce answers.

I agreed.

That was what I had already begun to understand.

I couldn't make Ethan remember something by asking the same question in different ways.

I couldn't make him feel safer by demanding that he explain why he was afraid.

I could tell him he was allowed to speak.

Then I could give him room.

The detective stepped away.

I turned toward my son.

"I want you to know something."

He paused the television.

I continued.

"You don't have to keep answering questions just because I'm worried. If you remember something, you can tell me. If you don't, that's okay too."

He looked at me.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

He nodded and returned to the television.

I sat back.

I had expected that being a good mother meant finding the right words.

Sometimes it meant knowing when to stop talking.

The clock ticked above the screen.

I looked at it and remembered how Ethan had noticed the sound earlier.

I had spent years living in this house without paying attention to it.

Now I could hear every tick.

Perhaps that was what fear did.

It made the things you had always lived beside seem suddenly important.

The problem was that not everything you noticed was a clue.

Sometimes it was simply a clock.

Sometimes a child was simply tired.

Sometimes a mother was simply frightened.

I needed to leave room for those ordinary explanations without dismissing the concern that had brought us here.

That balance was harder than I wanted to admit.

I was still afraid.

I still wanted someone to explain the mark.

I still wondered what the barber had seen and why he had looked so concerned.

But I was learning not to let those questions control every interaction with Ethan.

He deserved better than that.

He deserved a mother who could look at him and see her child, not just the problem that had interrupted their day.

I moved a little closer.

He rested his arm against mine.

I didn't ask whether he was comfortable.

I didn't ask whether he remembered anything else.

I simply watched the television with him.

After a while, he leaned against my shoulder.

I placed my arm around him.

We stayed that way until Detective Alvarez came back to explain the next part of the process.

I listened carefully.

I asked the questions I needed to ask.

I wrote down the information that required remembering.

Then I put the paper away.

When Ethan looked toward me, I smiled.

I was still his mother.

I was still frightened.

But I was beginning to understand that I didn't have to turn my fear into a question every time I looked at him.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: The Unfinished Haircut Kept Returning to My Mind, Reminding Me That the Moment Everything Changed Had Started With Someone Paying Attention

I didn't realize how tense I had become until Ethan moved away from me to stretch his legs.
