12 – I Stopped Searching for a Perfect Explanation and Began to Understand That Helping My Son Meant Facing Each Unknown One at a Time

The evening continued without the answer I wanted.

I had stopped checking the clock every few minutes.

Not because I had stopped caring.

Because I had begun to understand that the time would pass whether I watched it or not.

Ethan sat beside me with his blanket across his lap.

He had become quieter, but he no longer looked toward the entrance every time someone moved in the hallway.

I hoped that meant he felt a little more settled.

I didn't ask him to explain the change.

Detective Alvarez came into the living room and asked whether I was ready to discuss the arrangements for the next steps.

I said yes.

She explained what she could about how the concern would continue to be assessed.

I listened carefully and asked questions when I didn't understand something.

She answered what she could.

When she couldn't give me a definite answer, she said so.

I found that easier to accept now than I had earlier.

It still frightened me.

But I was beginning to understand that uncertainty was not the same as neglect.

The detective was not ignoring our situation.

She was being careful about what she could tell us.

I needed to allow room for that.

I asked what I should do if Ethan remembered something later.

She explained that I should listen calmly and share relevant information with the appropriate people rather than trying to investigate the matter myself.

I nodded.

I had no intention of turning our home into a place where every conversation became a test.

Ethan needed to feel that he could speak without being examined every time he opened his mouth.

I wanted him to be able to tell me about ordinary things again.

A school assignment.

A funny moment.

A game he wanted to play.

I didn't want every part of his life to become connected to the question behind his ear.

The detective asked whether I had understood the information she had given me.

I repeated the main points back to her.

She corrected one detail and answered another question.

I wrote the clarification on my paper.

Then I placed the pen down.

For the first time that day, I felt prepared for the next conversation.

Not because I knew what it would contain.

Because I knew how I wanted to approach it.

I would answer what I could.

I would admit what I couldn't.

I would not let fear decide what I believed.

Ethan tugged gently at my sleeve.

"Can we sit together for a while?"

I smiled.

"We already are."

He looked down at the space between us.

"I mean without talking."

I felt a lump rise in my throat.

"Of course."

I put the paper aside.

We sat quietly.

The television was off now.

The clock was the loudest familiar sound in the room.

I could hear faint movement from the hallway, but I didn't turn to look.

Ethan leaned against my shoulder.

I rested my cheek against his hair.

We stayed that way for several minutes.

I thought about all the times I had tried to fix his problems before he had finished explaining them.

When he struggled with homework, I had wanted to show him the quickest way to solve it.

When he misplaced something, I had searched for it before he had finished describing where he last saw it.

When he was upset, I had sometimes offered reassurance before understanding what had upset him.

I had meant well.

But I had often treated discomfort as something that needed to be removed immediately.

That evening, I couldn't remove it.

I could only stay beside him while he felt it.

Perhaps that was an important part of being his mother too.

Detective Alvarez approached after a while.

She asked whether Ethan wanted another break.

He said he was comfortable where he was.

She accepted that.

Then she spoke to me quietly, explaining that she would continue to communicate with us as the situation developed.

I thanked her.

I wanted to ask whether she believed the barber had noticed something serious.

I wanted to ask whether the mark could be explained by something ordinary.

I wanted to ask whether the officers had found anything else.

But I knew she could not responsibly answer questions that remained unresolved.

So I asked what information she needed from me at that point.

She said she would let me know if anything further was required.

I nodded.

It was a small exchange, but I felt different afterward.

I was no longer trying to force the detective to make the uncertainty disappear.

I was trying to understand what I could contribute.

That did not mean I had become patient.

I was still frightened.

I was still angry at the situation.

Sometimes I was angry at myself for being unable to protect Ethan from the fear of not knowing.

But I was beginning to recognize those feelings without letting them dictate my next action.

Ethan lifted his head.

"Can I go to bed later?"

I looked at him.

"Yes. We'll work out the rest when we know what the evening requires."

He nodded.

Then he asked whether he could keep his blanket.

I told him he could.

He pulled it closer around himself.

The loose thread at the corner caught on one of his fingers.

He worked it free and tucked it beneath the fold.

I watched him do that.

It reminded me of how he used to hold the edge of the blanket when he was very small.

I had spent years watching him grow more independent.

He wanted to choose his own clothes, make his own snacks, and decide when he needed help.

I had encouraged that independence.

Now I understood that growing up didn't mean he stopped needing reassurance.

Sometimes he needed it more.

I placed my hand over his.

"You don't have to act brave for me."

He looked at me.

"I'm not."

I almost smiled.

"All right."

He leaned against me again.

I didn't question him further.

I wanted to trust that he could tell me what he was able to tell me.

I also wanted to remember that his silence didn't automatically mean something terrible.

It might mean he was tired.

It might mean he had nothing more to say.

It might mean he was still trying to understand the day.

I didn't know.

And I didn't need to decide immediately.

The detective returned to her work.

I looked at the paper on the table one last time.

It contained the details I remembered, the questions I had asked, and the places where I had admitted uncertainty.

I had thought that a good account would contain answers.

Now I understood that an honest account could also contain gaps.

Those gaps were not an invitation to invent something.

They were reminders of what we still needed to learn.

I folded the paper and placed it somewhere safe.

Then I returned my attention to Ethan.

He was watching the clock.

"Does it always make that sound?"

I followed his gaze.

"The clock?"

He nodded.

"Yes. It has for years."

He listened for a moment.

Then he said that he had never noticed it before.

I looked at the clock.

Neither had I, not really.

The sound had been part of our home for so long that I had stopped hearing it.

That day had made me notice everything.

The buzzing clippers.

The sudden silence.

The radio crackling in the hallway.

The clock ticking above the television.

I didn't know which details would matter later.

I only knew that I would remember them.

I turned toward my son.

"Would you like me to turn the clock off?"

He shook his head.

"No. It's okay."

So I left it alone.

We sat together as the evening continued.

I couldn't tell Ethan what the mark meant.

I couldn't tell him why the barber had become concerned.

I couldn't tell him when the officers would finish their work or what the next day would bring.

But I could stop making him feel that he needed to supply the missing answers.

I could stop pretending that my fear was a problem he needed to solve.

And I could remain beside him while the adults worked to understand what had happened.

For now, that was enough to guide my next step.

Not enough to end the worry.

Enough to keep going.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: The Longer We Waited for an Explanation, the More I Realized That My Son Needed Me to Listen Instead of Keep Searching

The evening continued without the answer I wanted.
