11 – The Detective’s Careful Words Forced Me to Face the Difference Between What I Feared and What I Could Actually Prove

I had started to think of the day in separate pieces.

The morning.

The barber's shop.

The drive home.

The knock at the door.

The questions.

It was easier to hold those pieces separately than to let them become one frightening story in my head.

Detective Alvarez returned to the living room and asked whether I could review my notes with her.

I picked up the paper from the table.

The corners had begun to curl.

I smoothed them with my palm.

We went through the details in order.

She asked me to clarify a few points about the haircut.

I explained what I had seen and what I had not seen.

She asked whether I remembered the barber saying anything about how long the mark had been there.

I said no.

She asked whether he had offered an explanation.

Again, I said no.

I could tell she wanted to keep the account precise.

So did I.

There was no point in making the story sound clearer than it had been.

The detective asked whether I had noticed the mark at home before the haircut.

I told her I hadn't.

She asked whether I had ever examined that exact area closely.

I couldn't remember doing so.

I felt the old shame return.

I had bathed Ethan when he was younger.

I had helped him wash his hair.

I had checked him for ordinary childhood scrapes.

Why hadn't I noticed this?

Then I reminded myself that I didn't know when the mark had appeared or whether it had been visible before.

I could not use my lack of memory as proof of my failure.

I said that to myself slowly.

It didn't remove the discomfort.

But it stopped me from turning uncertainty into an accusation against myself.

Detective Alvarez asked whether I had spoken with Ethan about the mark before the police arrived.

I explained our conversation on the couch.

I described how I had asked whether he knew it was there.

I repeated his answer.

I also explained that I had asked whether anyone had told him to keep a secret.

He had said no.

The detective asked whether I had suggested an answer to him.

I thought carefully.

I had asked questions, but I had not told him what I thought the mark meant.

I said that I had tried not to lead him.

I couldn't claim that every word had been perfect.

I was frightened, and I had never faced this situation before.

But I had tried to let him answer in his own words.

The detective acknowledged that.

She explained that it was important not to pressure him to change an answer simply because an adult wanted a different one.

I agreed.

I looked toward Ethan.

He was sitting quietly, watching us.

I wondered how much of our conversation he understood.

I wondered whether he felt as if he had become the subject of something he could not control.

I turned toward him.

"You're allowed to say when you don't know something."

He nodded.

Detective Alvarez asked whether he wanted to add anything to the conversation.

He shook his head.

She thanked him and returned to her notes.

I felt relieved that he hadn't been pushed to produce more information.

I also felt frightened by the fact that we still had so little.

Those feelings existed together.

I was beginning to accept that they might continue to do so.

The detective asked whether I understood why she was being careful about the questions.

I said I did.

She explained that the purpose was to understand what had happened, not to force a particular explanation.

I nodded.

I had spent the afternoon wanting someone to tell me what the barber had seen.

But I was beginning to understand that an answer would only help if it was based on reliable information.

A quick guess might calm me for a few minutes.

It might also send us in the wrong direction.

I didn't want that.

I wanted to know what was true.

Even if the truth turned out to be more complicated than I expected.

I asked whether there was anything I should avoid doing while the concern was being assessed.

The detective explained that I should follow the guidance provided by the officers and avoid pressing Ethan for answers he did not have.

I told her I understood.

Then I asked whether I should continue writing down anything I remembered.

She said that an accurate account could be useful, provided I kept clear which details were memories and which were questions.

I looked at the paper.

There were already several lines where I had written that I was unsure.

I had thought those lines made my account weaker.

Now I understood that they made it more honest.

I added one note about the moment the clippers stopped.

I remembered the silence more clearly than the exact words.

I wrote that down.

The detective read the note and returned the paper.

I placed it beside the clock remote.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then Ethan asked whether he could have his blanket again.

I handed it to him.

He wrapped it around his shoulders and leaned into me.

I thought about how small the gesture was.

He wasn't asking me to solve the problem.

He was asking for something familiar.

I could give him that.

I rested my hand on his back.

Detective Alvarez asked whether he wanted to take another break.

He nodded.

She allowed him time to settle while she spoke with the other officers.

I watched her leave the room.

I felt the urge to follow her and ask whether she had learned anything.

I remained where I was.

I was tired of chasing every possible answer.

I needed to learn how to wait without treating waiting as a personal failure.

Ethan shifted closer.

"Mom, are you mad?"

I turned toward him.

"No. Why would you think that?"

He looked down at the blanket.

"You keep looking worried."

The honesty of his answer hurt.

I had been so focused on hiding my fear that I hadn't realized how clearly it showed.

I took his hand.

"I'm worried because I don't understand what's happening. But I'm not angry with you."

He looked at me for a moment.

Then he nodded.

I wished I could take away the worry he had seen on my face.

But I couldn't.

I could only make sure he understood that my fear was not a punishment.

I told him that adults sometimes became worried when they didn't have enough information.

He asked whether that meant something bad had happened.

I said I didn't know.

Then I added that we were trying to find out.

He seemed to accept that answer, though it didn't make him look completely calm.

I couldn't blame him.

I wasn't calm either.

The detective returned and asked whether we needed anything before the next stage of the process.

I said no.

Ethan shook his head too.

She explained that she would continue to keep us informed as information became available.

I thanked her.

Then I sat back against the couch.

The handwritten notes remained on the table.

The cup had been moved to the kitchen.

The clock continued to tick above the television.

Those small details had become familiar anchors in a day that seemed to keep changing shape.

I looked at Ethan.

He was still my son.

He had not become a mystery simply because the adults around him had questions.

He was a child who needed patience.

He needed us to take the concern seriously without deciding what it meant before we had enough information.

And he needed to know that he could be frightened without having to hide it from me.

I drew him closer.

For the first time, I stopped asking myself what I should have known earlier.

I asked a different question.

What could I do now?

I could listen.

I could be honest.

I could follow the guidance we were given.

I could make sure Ethan wasn't made to feel responsible for the uncertainty.

Those were not grand answers.

But they were things I could do.

And that was where I needed to begin.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: I Stopped Searching for a Perfect Explanation and Began to Understand That Helping My Son Meant Facing Each Unknown One at a Time

I had started to think of the day in separate pieces.
