I said.

The detective explained that I could help by listening, staying calm when possible, and being honest about what I knew.

She reminded me that uncertainty didn't mean I was failing him.

I looked down at my hands.

I wanted to believe that.

I had spent hours searching my memory for the moment I should have recognized something.

I had found no such moment.

I had found a child who seemed reluctant to get a haircut, a barber who noticed something, and a mother who had no explanation.

That was all.

I had to stop punishing myself for not knowing more than the facts allowed.

Ethan shifted beside me.

He asked whether he could go to the kitchen to get a snack.

I said yes, then asked whether he wanted me to come with him.

He nodded.

We walked together.

He opened the cupboard and looked at the familiar food inside.

For a moment, he seemed unsure what he wanted.

I waited.

Finally, he chose something small.

He sat at the kitchen table and began eating.

I watched him without asking questions.

The room smelled faintly of bread and dish soap.

A towel hung from the oven handle.

The sink held a few dishes from earlier in the day.

Nothing had changed.

And yet I couldn't stop thinking about how quickly an ordinary afternoon had become something I couldn't explain.

Ethan finished his snack and pushed the plate away.

"Can we go back?"

"Of course."

We returned to the living room.

He settled beneath his blanket again.

Detective Alvarez was speaking with another officer near the hallway.

I could see the two of them from the couch, but I couldn't hear their conversation.

I felt the familiar urge to listen.

I resisted it.

I didn't need to interpret a private conversation to prove that I cared about my son.

I needed to let the people doing the work do it.

That was harder than I expected.

I had spent the day wanting to control every part of the situation.

I wanted to know what the officers knew.

I wanted to know what they had asked other people.

I wanted to know what would happen next.

But none of those things became more certain because I watched the hallway.

I turned toward Ethan.

He had taken the blanket off his shoulders and folded it across his lap.

He was looking at the family photographs on the shelf.

"Do you remember when we took that one?"

I followed his gaze.

The photograph showed him smiling during an ordinary family outing.

I remembered the day.

I told him what I could.

He smiled faintly at one detail I mentioned.

For a few seconds, we were simply a mother and her son remembering something familiar.

Then the smile faded.

"Can we do something like that again?"

The question caught me by surprise.

"Yes," I said. "We can."

He looked at the photograph a little longer.

I didn't know whether he was asking about the activity itself or whether he wanted reassurance that our lives would eventually feel normal again.

I hoped it was both.

I also knew I couldn't promise exactly when that would happen.

So I told him that we would make plans when we knew more about what we needed to do.

He nodded.

I placed my arm around him.

The detective returned and asked whether Ethan was comfortable continuing to wait while the officers completed their work.

He said yes.

She asked whether he needed anything.

He shook his head.

Then she turned to me.

She explained that she didn't want me to mistake the number of questions for a conclusion about what had happened.

I understood what she meant.

The officers were asking questions because they needed information.

Their presence did not, by itself, establish an explanation.

I was grateful that she said it.

I had begun treating every movement in the house as evidence of something I didn't understand.

I needed to remember that an investigation involved uncertainty by its very nature.

I asked whether the officers had determined what the mark was.

She said she could not provide that conclusion at that point.

I nodded.

My disappointment was immediate.

I had hoped that by now someone would be able to tell me whether the concern was justified.

But I knew I couldn't demand certainty from a situation that had not yet been fully assessed.

I thanked her for explaining.

After she left, I looked at Ethan.

He was tracing a line along the edge of the blanket.

I wondered how he would remember this evening.

Would he remember the officers more than the questions?

Would he remember being frightened?

Would he remember that I had stayed beside him?

I couldn't control what he would carry from the day.

I could only try to make the experience as understandable and safe as possible.

I told him he could ask me anything.

He looked up.

"Anything?"

"Anything."

"What if you don't know?"

I smiled sadly.

"Then I'll tell you I don't know."

He considered that.

Then he leaned against me.

I realized that the promise mattered more than I had expected.

For years, I had answered his questions with the confidence of an adult who believed she should be able to explain the world.

Sometimes I had given him simple answers because he was young.

Sometimes I had said we would discuss something later.

I had rarely admitted how much I didn't know.

That evening, I had no choice.

And perhaps that honesty was better than pretending.

I held him close.

The house was still full of unanswered questions.

The barber's concern remained unexplained.

The officers had not finished their work.

But I was beginning to understand that protecting my son did not mean making every frightening thing disappear.

It meant staying present while we faced what we could not yet understand.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: The Detective’s Careful Words Forced Me to Face the Difference Between What I Feared and What I Could Actually Prove

I eventually stood to stretch my legs.
