He seemed concerned."

"Did he explain what concerned him?"

"No."

I couldn't offer more than that.

The detective asked me not to guess at what the barber might have been thinking.

I appreciated the reminder.

My mind had been trying to fill every gap with an explanation, and none of those explanations had become more reliable simply because I had repeated them to myself.

We moved on to the drive home.

I told her about asking Ethan whether anything had happened.

I repeated his answers as accurately as I could remember them.

Then I explained what we had discussed on the couch before the police arrived.

Detective Alvarez listened.

She asked whether Ethan had seemed frightened before the officers knocked.

I said he had seemed worried, but I couldn't be certain why.

"He knew I was worried," I added. "Children notice that."

The detective nodded.

She asked whether I had told him what I thought the mark might mean.

I said I hadn't.

I hadn't known what it meant.

I still didn't.

That was the most honest answer I could give.

After a while, she asked whether I remembered anything unusual about the barber's behavior before he stopped cutting.

I tried to reconstruct the scene.

The barber had greeted us normally.

He had spoken to Ethan about the haircut.

He had begun working.

Nothing I could remember suggested that he had expected to find anything unusual.

Then he had moved behind Ethan's chair.

He had lifted his hair.

And everything had changed.

I told her that I couldn't remember anything else.

She thanked me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

The clock above the television continued ticking.

I found myself counting the seconds without meaning to.

Then Detective Alvarez asked whether Ethan had said anything to me that afternoon that I had found particularly unusual.

I looked toward my son.

He was drawing a finger around the rim of the plastic cup.

I thought about the questions I had asked him in the car.

I remembered his answers.

I remembered the way he had looked down at his shoes.

I also remembered how frightened he had seemed when the officers arrived.

I explained those things without deciding what they meant.

Detective Alvarez asked whether I could think of anything else.

I shook my head.

She closed her notebook for a moment.

"You don't need to find an answer to every question right now," she told me.

I looked at her.

"I feel as though I should."

"I understand."

I wasn't sure she could fully understand what it felt like to sit beside your child and realize that your own memories weren't enough to explain what was happening.

But she didn't pretend that the answer would appear if I worried hard enough.

That helped.

A little.

Ethan asked whether he could go to his room.

I looked at Detective Alvarez.

She explained that we needed to make sure the officers had what they required before changing the arrangements.

Then she asked Ethan whether he wanted to stay near me while we continued talking.

He nodded.

I moved over on the couch so he could sit closer.

He rested his head against my shoulder.

I could feel the tension in his body.

I wanted to tell him that he didn't have to be afraid.

Instead, I rubbed his back slowly.

I had learned that reassurance could become another kind of pressure when a child felt expected to believe it.

So I stayed quiet.

The detective asked me to think about the people Ethan regularly encountered outside our home.

I listed the places he visited and the ordinary activities that filled his week.

She asked about his school routine.

I described the mornings, the afternoons, and the arrangements I usually made.

She asked whether I had noticed any changes in his willingness to go to familiar places.

I thought carefully before answering.

There had been days when he had complained about being tired.

There had been times when he wanted to stay home.

But children changed their minds about things all the time.

I couldn't say those moments were connected to the concern at the barber's shop.

I told her that.

She asked whether I had ever heard Ethan mention a person or situation that made him uncomfortable.

I tried to remember every conversation I could.

Nothing clear came to mind.

I felt frustrated with myself.

Then I reminded myself that I was not being asked to produce a perfect account of nine years of motherhood.

I was being asked to share what I knew.

There was a difference.

Detective Alvarez asked whether I had any questions about what she was doing.

I asked whether the officers had discovered anything else that explained their concern.

She said they were still assessing the available information.

She did not offer a conclusion.

I wanted one.

I wanted something definite enough to hold on to.

But I could see that she was trying not to give me an answer that might later prove wrong.

I forced myself to accept that.

For the moment, there was only what we knew.

The barber had noticed something behind Ethan's ear.

He had stopped cutting his hair.

I had seen the area afterward and become concerned.

The police had arrived and begun asking questions.

Everything beyond those facts remained uncertain.

I repeated them silently.

Not because they made me feel better.

Because I needed to stop treating every fear as if it were another fact.

Ethan lifted his head.

"Mom, can I have something to eat?"

The question startled me.

For several hours, I had almost forgotten that he was hungry, tired, and nine years old.

"Of course."

I asked the detective whether I could prepare something simple.

She agreed, and I went into the kitchen.

I took bread from the cupboard and placed two slices on a plate.

My hands were still shaking slightly.

I put the knife down before spreading anything, waiting until I felt steady enough to continue.

The kitchen looked exactly as it had that morning.

The same dishes were stacked beside the sink.

The same towel hung from the oven handle.

I stood there for a moment, staring at the counter.

I had wanted to return to an ordinary afternoon.

Now I was standing in my kitchen making food while police officers spoke with my son in the next room.

It was ordinary life, but it no longer felt simple.

I carried the plate into the living room.

Ethan ate slowly.

I sat beside him and watched him take small bites.

He didn't seem particularly hungry after the first few.

I didn't make him finish.

Detective Alvarez waited until he had put the plate aside before continuing.

She asked whether he felt comfortable answering another question.

Ethan looked at me.

I nodded gently.

"You can tell her if you remember something," I said.

He turned toward the detective.

She asked whether he remembered anyone touching the area behind his ear.

He stared at his hands.

"I don't remember."

She waited.

He rubbed his palms together.

Then he repeated that he didn't know.

The detective didn't press him to produce a different answer.

She thanked him for telling her what he remembered.

I felt a painful mixture of relief and fear.

Relief because he wasn't being forced to say more than he knew.

Fear because we still had no explanation.

Afterward, Ethan leaned against me again.

I kissed the top of his head.

He smelled faintly of the shampoo I had used that morning.

That familiar detail nearly undid me.

I had spent the day searching for signs that something was wrong.

Now I wanted to remember him as he was before the police arrived.

My little boy.

The child who left socks under the couch and forgot where he had put his favorite sweatshirt.

The child who sometimes asked for a second sandwich and sometimes claimed he wasn't hungry at all.

He was still that child.

Whatever the adults were trying to understand, he was still himself.

I needed to keep remembering that.

Detective Alvarez gathered her papers and stood.

She explained that the officers were continuing their work and that she would speak with us again as needed.

I asked whether she could tell me when we would know more.

She said she couldn't give me a reliable time.

I nodded.

For once, I didn't ask her to guess.

I had spent enough of the afternoon trying to turn uncertainty into certainty.

I was beginning to understand that doing so wouldn't help my son.

When the detective moved toward the doorway, Ethan reached for my hand again.

I held it.

The plastic cup remained on the table.

The clock kept ticking.

And I stayed beside him, waiting for the next question we could answer honestly.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: I Wanted Someone to Tell
