Their radios crackled as they communicated with one another.

I heard footsteps moving through the house.

A door opened.

Then the front entrance opened again as another unit arrived.

Ethan pressed himself against my side.

"Mom, did I do something bad?"

I crouched in front of him.

"No, sweetheart. You're not in trouble."

"Then why did they come here?"

I opened my mouth.

Nothing useful came out.

I wanted to tell him that everything would be fine, that the officers would ask a few questions and leave, and that we would eat dinner together afterward.

But I couldn't promise something I didn't understand.

The mark behind his ear was still in my mind.

So was the barber's expression.

I had no explanation for either of them.

"I don't know what's happening yet," I told him. "But I'm going to find out."

He studied my face as if he needed to decide whether he could trust that answer.

Then he moved closer.

A female officer approached us.

She introduced herself as Detective Alvarez.

Her voice was calm, and she spoke slowly enough for Ethan to follow.

She explained that she needed to ask us some questions.

Before beginning, she wanted us to know that the officers were there to help keep us safe.

I appreciated the care she took with those words.

I also noticed that she didn't promise us there was nothing to fear.

She couldn't know that.

Neither could I.

Detective Alvarez pulled a chair closer but didn't sit until I did.

She kept her attention on Ethan without ignoring me.

That small courtesy mattered.

"Can you tell me when you last remember someone touching the area behind your ear?"

Ethan looked at me.

I wanted to answer for him.

I wanted to say nobody had touched him there, because I couldn't remember seeing anyone do so.

But I stopped myself.

The question had been directed at my son.

He needed the chance to answer it in his own words.

He lowered his eyes.

"I don't remember."

Detective Alvarez nodded.

"That's all right. Take your time."

He rubbed his palms against his trousers.

I recognized the movement.

He did it when he was nervous at school or when he thought he had disappointed me.

I reached for his hand, but I didn't squeeze it.

I didn't want him to feel that I was asking him to say something particular.

The detective asked whether he could explain what the mark looked like before the barber noticed it.

Ethan shook his head.

"Did you know it was there?"

"No."

"Has anybody talked to you about it?"

He paused.

Then he said no.

Detective Alvarez didn't challenge him.

She asked a few more questions, allowing silence to remain between them when he needed time.

I watched her face, hoping it would reveal something.

It didn't.

She had the expression of someone trying to understand a situation without deciding too early what it meant.

I should have been grateful for that.

Instead, I felt impatient.

I wanted her to tell me what the mark was, why the barber had reacted as he did, and why several officers were now moving through my home.

I wanted the uncertainty to end.

I wanted it so badly that I began to resent the detective for not giving me an answer she didn't have.

That is something I am ashamed of now.

She was trying to do her job.

I was a frightened mother looking for someone who could make the fear disappear.

Those were not the same thing.

Detective Alvarez turned toward me.

"When did you first notice the area behind his ear?"

"At the barber's shop."

"Had you seen anything unusual there before today?"

"No."

"Have you noticed any changes in his behavior recently?"

I looked at Ethan.

He was watching the floor.

I thought about the way he had been reluctant to leave the house.

I thought about his short answers and the moment he had looked toward the hallway.

Then I wondered whether fear was making me connect ordinary things that had nothing to do with one another.

"He has been quieter sometimes," I said. "But he's nine. I didn't think it meant anything."

The detective asked me to describe what I meant by quieter.

I explained that Ethan occasionally preferred to be alone after school.

Sometimes he answered questions with one word.

Sometimes he wanted to stay home rather than go somewhere with me.

I had considered those habits normal.

I still couldn't say whether they were connected to what had brought the police to my door.

Detective Alvarez listened without interrupting.

Then she asked about the barber.

I told her we had gone there for a haircut.

I described the moment he stopped cutting and examined the skin behind Ethan's ear.

I explained that he had seemed concerned and recommended that someone look at it.

I told her how we had left the shop and returned home.

I didn't leave out the questions I had asked Ethan in the car.

I didn't leave out his answers.

When I finished, the detective made a note.

"Did the barber tell you exactly what he thought he saw?"

"No."

"Did he say whether he had noticed something similar before?"

"No."

"Did he explain why he was concerned?"

I shook my head.

"He just looked worried."

Detective Alvarez wrote something else.

I stared at the notebook.

I couldn't read what she had written from where I sat.

I wanted to ask her what it meant.

Instead, I waited.

One of the other officers appeared in the doorway.

He spoke quietly to the detective.

I couldn't hear every word, but I saw her expression change slightly.

She thanked him and asked him to continue.

Then she returned her attention to me.

"Has anyone contacted you recently about Ethan's safety?"

"No."

"Has anyone asked you to bring him somewhere, or requested information about him?"

I thought carefully.

I remembered school messages, calls from other parents, and ordinary conversations about schedules.

Nothing stood out.

"Not that I can think of."

"Has Ethan spent time with anyone you were concerned about?"

I felt the question land heavily.

Every parent has moments when they wonder whether they have made the right decisions about the people around their child.

I had trusted teachers, other parents, and adults who seemed perfectly ordinary.

I couldn't turn every memory into a reason for suspicion simply because I was frightened now.

"I haven't knowingly allowed him to be around anyone I thought was unsafe," I said.

The detective acknowledged my answer.

She didn't tell me that it proved anything.

I began to understand that the officers were not going to solve this by asking one perfect question.

They were collecting pieces.

Some might matter.

Some might not.

I wished I knew which were which.

Ethan shifted beside me.

Detective Alvarez noticed.

"Would you like a little break?"

He nodded.

She gave him time and asked another officer to bring him some water.

The officer returned with a clear plastic cup.

Ethan held it in both hands.

He took a small sip and placed it on the table.

I watched the water tremble slightly when he set it down.

My son was trying to behave as if this were a normal visit.

He had always been good at following instructions when he was scared.

I had praised that quality before.

Now it hurt to see it.

Detective Alvarez asked whether Ethan could speak with her privately for a short time, with the appropriate safeguards in place.

My first reaction was to refuse.

He was my child.

I wanted to stay beside him, to hear every question, and to make sure nobody misunderstood anything he said.

But I also understood that he might find it difficult to speak honestly while watching my face.

I looked at him.

"You can tell the detective what you remember," I said. "You don't have to worry about making me happy."

His eyes moved toward mine.

I wondered whether he believed me.

Detective Alvarez explained what would happen next and made sure he understood that he could ask for a pause if he needed one.

Ethan agreed.

I moved to the other side of the room, where I could no longer hear every word.

I sat with my hands clasped together.

The officers continued their work around us.

I heard the radio again.

I heard a cupboard close in another room.

I heard the familiar clock on the wall ticking above the television.

That clock had been in our house for years.

I had never paid attention to it.

Now every second seemed to announce that something was happening beyond my control.

When the conversation ended, Ethan returned to my side.

He sat close enough that our shoulders touched.

I didn't ask him what he had said.

I waited for him to speak first.

He didn't.

Detective Alvarez came back to me.

She told me they were continuing to assess the situation and that they needed to examine the information available to them carefully.

I asked whether my son was in danger.

She paused before answering.

"We're taking the concern seriously."

That wasn't the answer I wanted.

It was the answer she could give me.

I asked whether I needed to take him somewhere.

She said they would explain the next steps as they became clearer.

I looked toward the entrance, where another officer was standing.

The front door remained open just enough for me to hear voices outside.

I suddenly became aware of how exposed our home felt.

Neighbors could see the vehicles.

Someone might wonder what had happened.

Someone might tell someone else.

For one brief moment, I worried about what people would think of me.

Then I looked at Ethan and hated myself for it.

My child was frightened, and I was thinking about appearances.

I had spent the afternoon wishing I could return to an ordinary day.

Now I would have given anything to return to the moment before the barber stopped cutting.

I wanted to sit in that chair again, watching Ethan in the mirror, worrying about groceries and dinner.

I wanted to be the mother who didn't know.

Instead, I was the mother who had to listen.

And there was still so much I didn't understand.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: Every Ordinary Memory Became a Question as I Tried to Understand What My Son Had Not Told Me

I had never imagined seeing police officers inside my living room.
