That's what matters."

I looked at her.

"Is it?"

She acted as though she hadn't heard the question.

My mother cleared her throat.

I knew that sound.

It usually meant she wanted someone to stop saying something uncomfortable.

Most often, that someone was me.

"Rosie, it's been a lovely evening."

I looked at the table.

"I'm sure it has."

My mother pressed her lips together.

I could see that my answer bothered her.

But nobody seemed interested in how I felt about arriving at an empty celebration.

I glanced at the glasses.

Champagne.

Wine.

More than one bottle had clearly been opened.

A platter sat between two serving dishes.

What remained on it looked like the aftermath of an expensive steak dinner.

There had been seafood too.

I could see that much.

This hadn't been a modest family meal.

They had enjoyed themselves.

There was nothing wrong with that.

The problem was that I hadn't been included in enjoying it.

I was only now beginning to understand how they expected the evening to end.

Courtney reached toward the folded check.

She moved it closer to me.

Casually.

As if she were passing me a menu.

I looked down.

"What's that?"

She gave me a brief look.

"The bill."

I waited.

She waited too.

It would have been easier if she'd looked embarrassed.

If she'd spoken quietly.

If she'd offered even a weak explanation for why the check was being presented to the one person who hadn't eaten.

But there was no embarrassment.

Only expectation.

I thought of the way my parents had looked when I entered.

Dad had seemed surprised.

Mom had seemed uncomfortable.

Courtney had seemed satisfied.

Those three reactions told me more than anyone's words.

I put my bag down beside me.

Not because I intended to stay.

Because I needed both hands free.

One to steady the paperwork.

The other to keep myself from doing what I usually did.

Reaching for my wallet.

I had done it so many times before that the movement felt almost automatic.

A family expense appeared.

Someone looked at me.

I handled it.

No discussion.

No difficulty.

No scene.

That was the role I had allowed myself to occupy.

I didn't mind being generous.

I minded discovering that generosity had apparently become an obligation.

And that evening, the difference felt enormous.

I touched the edge of the bill.

Courtney watched me.

Her expression said she considered the matter nearly finished.

My mother began straightening something beside her plate.

My father looked unhappy.

Still, nobody told Courtney to take the check back.

Nobody said it was wrong to expect me to pay for a celebration I had been excluded from.

I noticed that.

I noticed every second of it.

The room wasn't loud.

There was no argument yet.

No raised voice.

No dramatic confrontation.

Just a restaurant bill resting in front of me.

And a family behaving as though my next step was obvious.

I wanted to ask my mother whether she would have done the same thing.

Invited someone after dinner.

Given them a bill.

Called it a family celebration.

But I didn't ask.

I was afraid of the answer.

Courtney tilted her head.

"Are you going to look at it?"

That brought me back to the table.

I picked up the paperwork.

The paper was heavier than I expected.

There were multiple pages.

And before I even reached the list of charges, I noticed the restaurant had included information about the reservation.

I read it once.

Then again.

There was a notation attached to my name.

A short instruction.

Not a message from my parents.

Not something Courtney could claim I had misunderstood in conversation.

It was part of the restaurant's written record.

Rosemary was listed as the person responsible for payment.

Not as someone joining the dinner.

The distinction was right there.

In black ink.

And as I stared at it, every uncomfortable detail of the evening suddenly fit together.

<a
