We did."

I followed her eyes.

There was nothing left for me to see except the evidence that it had been served.

I had been invited to an anniversary celebration.

At least, that was what I had understood.

There had been no mention that I would be missing the actual celebration.

No warning that the meal would be over.

No explanation that my place at the table would be different from everyone else's.

I looked at my parents again.

They seemed uncomfortable now.

But discomfort was not the same thing as objection.

That distinction had taken me longer to learn than I liked admitting.

My father kept watching Courtney.

My mother kept watching me.

And Courtney watched neither of them.

She was looking toward the check.

It was resting near the edge of the table.

A small thing.

Folded restaurant paperwork.

The kind of thing most people ignored until it was time to leave.

Courtney didn't ignore it.

She turned toward me with an expectant expression.

And I finally understood that there was a reason she had wanted me to arrive after everyone finished.

I just wasn't ready to say it aloud.

Not yet.

For a few seconds, I still wanted an innocent explanation.

Maybe dinner had started earlier than planned.

Maybe there had been a misunderstanding.

Maybe someone had forgotten to tell me.

I was willing to believe almost anything except the answer sitting directly in front of me.

That was the part I felt ashamed of later.

I wasn't confused because the situation was complicated.

I was confused because I didn't want to believe my own family had done it deliberately.

Courtney touched the paperwork with one finger.

My eyes followed her hand.

Then she smiled again.

And I knew the conversation wasn't going to be about why I had missed dinner.

It was going to be about what she expected me to do now.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: My Sister Let Everyone Finish Their Expensive Anniversary Dinner Before Showing Me the Only Reason She Wanted Me There

I should have asked why Courtney wanted me there at nine.
