16 – The Night Passed Without Giving Me the Explanation I Wanted, but I Finally Stopped Treating Every Quiet Minute as a Warning

I slept badly that night, though not for the same reason as before.

My thoughts kept returning to the conversation at dinner.

Dererick had not explained the gloves.

He had not explained the black bag.

He had told me that he understood why I wanted an answer, and I wanted to believe him.

But understanding my fear did not make it disappear.

I turned onto my side and pulled the blanket closer.

The room was dark.

I could hear Dererick breathing beside me.

I did not watch his hands.

I did not stare at the dresser.

I kept my eyes closed and let the room remain a room.

At some point, I woke briefly.

I could not tell how much time had passed.

The clock display was dim, and I did not turn my head to read it.

I listened for a moment.

Nothing unusual reached me.

I felt the old impulse to check whether Dererick was still beside me.

I let the impulse pass.

It was not easy.

I had spent too many nights believing that if I paid attention to every sound, I might finally understand what was happening.

But attention had not given me an answer.

It had only kept me awake.

I turned onto my back and breathed slowly.

The blanket rose and fell with me.

I could feel the mattress beneath my shoulders.

I could hear the faint hum of the house.

Those were things I knew.

I did not need to add anything to them.

When I woke again, morning light had reached the curtains.

Dererick was already sitting on the edge of the bed, pulling on his socks.

I watched him for a moment.

He looked over his shoulder.

“Morning.”

“Morning.”

“Did you sleep?”

“Some.”

He nodded.

“Me too.”

He stood and went to the bathroom.

I remained in bed for another minute, thinking about how easy it would have been to treat his early rising as a clue.

I did not know why he had gotten up when he did.

I did not need to decide.

I got dressed and went downstairs.

Dererick was making breakfast.

He had placed bread beside the toaster and set a plate on the counter.

The kettle was empty.

He looked at me.

“Toast?”

“Yes, please.”

He made two slices for me and two for himself.

We ate at the kitchen table.

The chipped mug remained in the cupboard, and I did not think about it until I had finished eating.

Even then, the thought came and went without taking over the morning.

I was beginning to understand that a memory could remain painful without requiring me to return to it every hour.

After breakfast, Dererick rinsed his plate.

“I'll be back later,” he said.

“Okay.”

He hesitated near the doorway.

“I haven't forgotten our conversation.”

I looked at him.

“Thank you for telling me.”

He nodded, then left.

I stood in the kitchen after the door closed.

I felt a small measure of relief.

Not because he had answered my question.

He had not.

But because he had acknowledged that the question remained between us.

I could no longer pretend the conversation had never happened.

Neither could he.

I spent the morning doing ordinary things.

I folded laundry and put it away.

I cleaned the counter.

I opened the windows for a few minutes, then closed them when the air grew too cool.

I did not keep checking the clock.

I did not rehearse what I would say if Dererick came home and still had no explanation.

I wanted to leave some space in my mind for the rest of my life.

At midday, I made myself lunch and ate it at the table.

I looked at the cupboard where the mug stood.

I considered taking it down to make tea.

I also considered leaving it where it was.

In the end, I made a glass of water and sat by the window.

The decision did not feel like a failure.

It was simply what I wanted at that moment.

I drank slowly and watched the light move across the floor.

I thought about the woman I had been before that first night.

She had trusted Dererick without having to think about trust.

She had accepted tea when he offered it.

She had gone to bed without listening for the sound of gloves.

I missed the ease of that life.

But I could not go back to it by pretending I had never seen what I saw.

If trust was going to mean anything to me now, it would have to include the ability to ask questions when something troubled me.

I did not know whether the answer would restore my confidence.

I knew only that silence had not restored it.

In the afternoon, I sat with my notebook.

I read the three sentences again.

I saw Dererick put on gloves.

He picked up a black bag.

I do not know why.

I thought about adding a fourth sentence.

I wanted to write that I was afraid.

I wanted to write that I still loved him.

I wanted to write that those two things had become difficult to hold together.

Instead, I closed the notebook.

The sentences I had already written were enough for that day.

When Dererick came home, I was preparing dinner.

He entered the kitchen and set down his keys.

“Hey.”

“Hey.”

He washed his hands and asked what I needed help with.

I gave him a small task, and he did it without complaint.

We cooked together.

The conversation stayed ordinary until we sat down to eat.

Then he put down his fork.

“I've been thinking about what you saw.”

I stopped eating.

“Okay.”

He looked at me.

“I know you want me to explain it.”

“Yes.”

“I haven't forgotten.”

I held his gaze.

“I believe you haven't forgotten. But I still don't know what happened.”

He nodded.

“I understand.”

I waited a moment before speaking again.

“I don't want us to keep going around the same conversation.”

“Neither do I.”

“Then I need you to tell me when you can talk about it properly.”

He looked down at the table.

I felt my stomach tighten, but I kept my voice steady.

“I'm not asking you to answer this second. I'm asking you not to leave me waiting without knowing whether we're going to talk about it.”

He remained quiet for a few seconds.

Then he looked up.

“All right,” he said. “That's fair.”

I wanted to ask whether he could give me a day.

I wanted to press until he gave me something definite.

But I had said what I needed to say, and he had acknowledged it.

I decided to let the conversation rest for the moment.

We finished dinner.

Afterward, I washed the dishes while Dererick dried them.

He placed each plate in the cupboard and closed the door gently.

When we were done, he stood beside me at the counter.

“I don't want you to feel alone with this,” he said.

I looked at him.

“I already have.”

He seemed to take that in.

“I know.”

His answer was quiet.

I could not tell whether he understood the full weight of what I meant.

I could not make him understand by repeating it until the words lost their meaning.

So I left it there.

We went upstairs and got ready for bed.

I brushed my teeth, washed my face, and turned off the bathroom light.

When I entered the bedroom, Dererick was arranging the pillows.

He moved aside to let me pass.

I climbed into bed.

He settled beside me, and the room grew quiet.

For a few minutes, I lay awake.

The old fear was still there, waiting for a sound it could use.

I knew that if I heard the snap of gloves or saw the black bag again, I would notice.

I could not promise myself that I would remain calm.

But I could promise myself something else.

I would not invent an explanation before I had one.

I would not mistake a quiet room for proof that nothing was wrong.

I would not mistake my fear for proof that something terrible had happened.

Those were small promises.

They did not answer the question.

They gave me a way to live while the answer remained unknown.

I turned onto my side and closed my eyes.

Dererick's breathing was steady beside me.

I let myself listen without searching for a hidden meaning.

Eventually, I fell asleep.

The night passed without the answer I wanted.

When morning came, I was still afraid.

But I was no longer pretending that fear alone could tell me the truth.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: I Finally Asked My Husband to Stop Asking Me to Be Patient and Tell Me What He Had Been Hiding

I slept badly that night, though not for the same reason as before.
