15 – I Began to Understand That Waiting for an Answer Was Different From Waiting in the Dark and Hoping Nothing Would Happen

The following day, I woke with the same question, but I did not feel the same urgency to chase it through every room.

I knew what I had seen.

I knew what I had asked.

I knew Dererick had said he needed more time.

Those facts were enough for the morning.

They were not enough to settle my fear, but I stopped demanding that they do so.

I got dressed and went downstairs.

The kitchen was quiet.

I filled the kettle with water, then paused with my hand on the switch.

For a moment, I considered making tea.

The thought felt strange because I had spent so long avoiding it.

I did not know whether I wanted the drink or wanted to prove that I could still make it without being afraid.

Those were not the same thing.

I put the kettle back down.

Then I made myself breakfast.

I did not treat the decision as a victory.

I had no need to turn every ordinary choice into a test of my courage.

After eating, I washed my plate and opened the kitchen window a little.

Cool air moved into the room.

I stood there for a while, looking at the counter and the cupboards.

The house seemed less crowded when I allowed the objects to be what they were.

A mug was a mug.

A drawer was a drawer.

A bag was a bag, even if I did not know why Dererick had carried it.

I could not make those things harmless by naming them plainly.

But I could stop making them into answers they had never given me.

The morning passed without much happening.

I folded laundry and returned the towels to the cupboard.

I cleaned a small mark from the hallway wall.

I watered a plant that had begun to droop near the window.

These were small things, but they belonged to my life.

I did not want fear to take them away from me.

At midday, I sat down with my book again.

I read several pages before noticing that I had lost track of the story.

I smiled at myself.

For days, I had been unable to focus on anything for more than a few minutes.

Now, at least, I could see what was happening.

I closed the book and made lunch.

I did not punish myself for being distracted.

I ate, washed my plate, and went outside.

The sky was bright, and the street was quiet.

I stood in the doorway and listened to the sounds from nearby homes.

Someone was talking.

A gate clicked shut.

A vehicle passed and faded into the distance.

The world had not changed because I was afraid.

That should have been obvious, but I had needed to feel it.

When I came back inside, I opened the cupboard to put away a glass.

The chipped mug caught my eye.

I took it down.

I held it in both hands and turned it slowly.

I remembered the tea cooling in it while I stood in the kitchen, waiting for Dererick to leave the room.

I remembered pouring it into the sink.

I remembered the faint line that remained after I rinsed it.

For a long time, I had thought of that moment as the point when I began protecting myself.

Now I could see another part of it.

I had been frightened, and I had acted without telling him what I was afraid of.

I was not ashamed of trying to feel safe.

I was ashamed of how completely I had withdrawn into my own guesses.

I could not change that night.

I could decide what I did with the next one.

I washed the mug and set it on the drying rack.

Then I went back to my book.

When Dererick came home that evening, I was in the kitchen preparing dinner.

He set down his keys and came over to see what I was making.

“That smells good,” he said.

“It's nothing complicated.”

“Still smells good.”

I smiled.

For a moment, the exchange felt like one of our old evenings.

I did not try to decide whether that meant anything.

He washed his hands and offered to help.

I asked him to cut the vegetables.

We worked side by side.

I noticed his hands, of course.

I had become too aware of them not to.

But I also noticed the way he held the knife, the way he pushed the chopped pieces into a neat pile, and the way he moved the board closer to me when he finished.

I let those details exist without turning them into proof of innocence or guilt.

We ate dinner at the table.

Halfway through the meal, Dererick put down his fork.

“I've been thinking about what you said.”

My stomach tightened.

I placed my fork beside my plate.

“Okay.”

“I don't want you to think I'm ignoring it.”

“I don't think you're ignoring it.”

He looked at me.

“Do you believe that?”

I considered the question.

“I believe you know it's important to me.”

He nodded slowly.

“That is fair.”

I waited.

He looked toward the kitchen, then back at his plate.

“I still need to work out how to explain it.”

I felt disappointment, but I did not let it become anger before I understood it.

“What makes it difficult to explain?”

He pressed his lips together.

“I don't want to say something badly and make things worse.”

I looked at him.

“Not saying anything is making things difficult, too.”

“I know.”

He rubbed his hands together once, then rested them on the table.

“I hear you.”

I wanted more than that.

I wanted a clear answer about the gloves and the bag.

But I could see that repeating the same question would not necessarily produce one.

“I'm not asking you to have perfect words,” I said.

He nodded.

“I understand.”

I was not sure he did.

Still, I had told him something true, and he had listened.

That mattered, even if it did not settle anything.

We finished dinner.

I washed the dishes while he dried them.

He did not offer tea afterward.

I did not ask why.

The kitchen routine continued, and I found myself feeling tired rather than frightened.

There was a difference.

Fear made every moment feel urgent.

Tiredness told me I had been carrying too much for too long.

I wanted to rest without pretending that rest would solve the problem.

When we went upstairs, I changed into my nightclothes and sat on the edge of the bed.

Dererick was in the bathroom brushing his teeth.

The light shone beneath the door.

I heard the tap run.

For a moment, the sound returned me to the night when I had poured out the tea.

I looked toward the dresser.

The room was still.

I did not get up to inspect it.

I did not search for the bag.

I did not listen for a snap that might or might not come.

I was not refusing to pay attention.

I was refusing to make fear my only form of attention.

Dererick came back into the bedroom and put his phone on the bedside table.

He looked at me.

“You okay?”

I thought about giving him the easy answer.

Then I decided to be more honest.

“I'm still worried.”

He sat beside me.

“I know.”

“I don't want to keep guessing.”

He looked down at his hands.

“I don't want you to have to.”

For a moment, I felt hope.

Then I reminded myself that hope was not an answer either.

But it was something I could feel without being ashamed of it.

We got into bed.

He reached for my hand, and I let him take it.

I did not pretend that everything was fine.

I did not pull away just to prove that I was still afraid.

I lay beside him and allowed the uncertainty to remain where it was.

It was not comfortable.

It was simply honest.
