8 – The Chipped Mug Reminded Me How Easily I Had Accepted His Care, Even When My Own Instincts Began Telling Me to Stop

The next morning, I took the mug out of the cupboard.

I did not make tea.

I simply held it while I stood at the kitchen counter.

The small chip near the handle caught against my thumb.

I had owned that mug for years.

I knew where it belonged, how much liquid it held, and how it felt when I wrapped both hands around it on a cold morning.

It was an ordinary object.

That was what made it difficult to look at.

For weeks, Dererick had used it to bring me something he said was meant to help me relax.

I had accepted it because I trusted him.

Then, one evening, I had poured the tea away.

I still did not know whether that decision had protected me from anything.

I only knew I had been unable to drink it.

I placed the mug on the counter and turned toward the window.

Morning light fell across the kitchen table.

The house looked peaceful.

I wanted to believe that peace was more than an appearance.

When Dererick came downstairs, he found me standing beside the counter.

“Making tea?”

I looked at the mug.

“No.”

He glanced at it.

“Just cleaning up?”

“Something like that.”

He accepted the answer and went to prepare his coffee.

I watched him from the corner of my eye.

He did not seem angry.

He did not seem confused.

He moved through the kitchen with the same quiet confidence he had always shown.

That was what made it so hard to decide what to believe.

If he had behaved like a different person, I might have found it easier to separate the man I knew from the man I feared.

Instead, he continued doing all the familiar things.

He asked whether I needed anything from the store.

He reminded me about an appointment.

He noticed that I had left a drawer open and closed it as he passed.

Nothing was obviously wrong.

And yet I could no longer live inside those ordinary moments without thinking about the night he had worn gloves.

I made breakfast and sat across from him.

He asked about my plans.

I told him what I needed to finish that day.

He nodded and drank his coffee.

For a little while, I managed to focus on the conversation.

Then he asked whether I wanted him to make tea that evening.

I looked up.

“Why?”

He seemed surprised by the question.

“Because you used to like it.”

I looked down at my plate.

“I haven't felt like drinking it lately.”

He set his cup on the table.

“All right.”

He did not argue.

He did not demand an explanation.

He simply returned to his breakfast.

I felt a strange mixture of relief and disappointment.

I had expected him to push.

I had expected him to ask why I had changed my habits.

Instead, he let the matter go.

That should have made things easier.

It did not.

I spent the rest of the morning thinking about how little I could learn from his reaction.

If he had insisted, I might have taken it as a warning.

Because he did not insist, I found myself searching for another meaning.

I was becoming trapped in a circle of suspicion.

Every possible answer led me back to the same question.

What had I actually seen?

The answer remained unchanged.

Dererick had been wearing gloves.

He had carried a black bag.

He had moved around the bedroom while believing I was asleep.

I could not explain why.

I could not connect those actions to anything certain.

But I could no longer dismiss them as a dream or a trick of the light.

That afternoon, I worked at my laptop in the living room.

The screen was filled with unfinished tasks.

I tried to concentrate on each one.

I answered a message.

I corrected a mistake.

I read a paragraph twice.

Then I looked toward the kitchen.

The mug was still on the counter.

I had forgotten to put it away.

I got up and carried it to the sink.

For a moment, I considered washing it again.

I had already washed it.

There was no reason to do it twice.

Still, I turned on the water and held the cup beneath it.

The sound filled the kitchen.

I watched the water run over the ceramic and disappear down the drain.

Then I stopped.

I had begun repeating the same actions because I could not find any other way to make myself feel in control.

That realization embarrassed me.

I placed the mug on the drying rack and wiped my hands.

I needed to stop treating the cup as if it held an answer.

The answer, if there was one, would not come from staring at an empty mug.

It would come from understanding what Dererick had been doing.

I did not know how to reach that understanding yet.

But I knew the kitchen could not give it to me.

That evening, Dererick came home and set his keys on the table.

He greeted me, asked about my day, and went to change clothes.

I watched him leave the room.

I thought about asking him where he kept the black bag.

The question seemed simple enough.

I could ask whether he had brought something home recently. I could mention that I had seen a bag in the bedroom and wondered what it was for.

But I knew I would be hiding the real reason for asking.

I would be trying to discover something without revealing what I already suspected.

I did not know whether that was sensible or cowardly.

Perhaps it was both.

When he returned, we prepared dinner together.

He asked me to take something from the refrigerator.

I did.

He asked whether I wanted more vegetables.

I said no.

We ate at the table and talked about ordinary things.

I watched him reach for his water glass.

His fingers closed around it, and he took a drink.

I looked away.

I was tired of studying him.

I was tired of being frightened by movements that had once meant nothing to me.

Most of all, I was tired of pretending that I could return to the way things had been simply by behaving as though nothing had happened.

After dinner, I carried my plate to the sink.

Dererick followed with his.

He washed while I dried.

When we finished, I put the last dish away and closed the cupboard.

The chipped mug remained on the drying rack.

I picked it up and returned it to its place.

Then I shut the door.

It was a small action.

A cup put away.

A cupboard closed.

But I found myself standing there with my hand still on the handle, thinking about the difference between putting something out of sight and making it disappear.

I could hide the mug behind the cupboard door.

I could avoid the tea.

I could refuse to ask questions.

None of those things would erase what I had seen.

I let go of the handle.

Dererick was waiting in the living room.

He asked whether I wanted to watch television with him.

I said yes.

We sat together on the sofa, close enough that our shoulders nearly touched.

He reached for my hand.

For a moment, I let him hold it.

His palm was warm.

The touch brought back memories of quieter days, when I had never questioned what his hands might do or what he might be hiding.

I felt grief for those days.

I also felt afraid.

Both feelings were there, and neither would leave.

After a while, I gently withdrew my hand and reached for the remote.

“I want to change the channel.”

He let go.

“Sure.”

I changed it.

He settled back against the sofa.

We continued watching.

I wondered whether he had noticed my hesitation.

I wondered whether he understood how far away I felt, even sitting beside him.

I wondered whether he had any idea that I had spent so many nights replaying the same few minutes in our bedroom.

I did not ask.

The television continued playing.

The house remained quiet.

And I sat beside my husband, finally accepting that the life we shared could look unchanged while something inside me had shifted beyond easy repair.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: I Started Listening to the Small Sounds in Our House Because the Things I Could See Still Refused to Explain What I Had Seen

The next morning, I took the mug out of the cupboard.
