He had made coffee, and I had told him about something that had happened during the week.

He had listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he had reached across the table and squeezed my hand.

It was a small moment.

Nothing dramatic had happened.

That was why I remembered it.

I had felt understood.

Now the memory seemed to belong to a different life.

I could not decide whether that feeling was unfair to him or honest about what had changed.

Perhaps both.

I had no proof that he had done anything to harm me.

I had no proof that the tea contained anything unusual.

I had no proof that the bag held something dangerous.

But I had seen him behave in a way I could not explain, and the fact that I loved him did not make the memory less real.

I began to understand that I had been treating doubt as a kind of betrayal.

If I suspected Dererick, I felt guilty.

If I accepted his kindness, I felt frightened.

If I questioned him in my mind, I felt as though I were destroying the marriage without giving him a chance to explain.

I was trapped between wanting to trust him and being afraid to do so.

Neither feeling would leave me alone.

One afternoon, I returned home and found the kitchen spotless.

The counter had been wiped clean.

The dishes were put away.

The mug with the chipped handle stood in the cupboard beside the others.

Dererick had always been tidy.

Usually, I appreciated it.

That afternoon, I stood in the doorway and looked at the counter.

I remembered the tea disappearing down the drain.

I remembered the spoon rattling against the ceramic.

I remembered checking the stairs to make sure he was still upstairs.

Those memories made the clean kitchen feel different.

I walked to the sink and turned on the tap.

Water ran over my fingers.

I watched it for a while, then turned it off.

I had been hoping that some small detail would reveal itself if I paid enough attention.

A mark.

A smell.

A forgotten object.

Something that would turn suspicion into knowledge.

But the kitchen offered nothing.

I dried my hands and went upstairs.

Dererick came home later.

He greeted me with a kiss and asked how my day had gone.

I told him it had been busy.

He asked whether I wanted to eat out or stay home.

I said I did not mind.

He suggested we stay in.

I agreed.

The entire exchange was so ordinary that I felt a sudden ache in my chest.

I missed being able to answer him without thinking about every word.

During dinner, he talked about something that had happened earlier in the day.

I listened and asked a few questions.

At one point, he reached across the table and moved my glass away from the edge.

“You nearly knocked that over.”

“Thanks.”

He smiled.

“You've been distracted.”

I looked down at my plate.

“Maybe a little.”

He waited.

I could feel him expecting me to say more.

For a moment, I considered telling him the truth.

I imagined saying that I had seen him wearing gloves in the bedroom. I imagined asking him about the black bag and watching his face while he answered.

Perhaps he would explain everything.

Perhaps I would feel ashamed for doubting him.

Perhaps I would discover that the fear I had been carrying was built on a misunderstanding.

I wanted that outcome so badly that I almost spoke.

Then I remembered the way he had looked toward the bed.

I remembered how carefully he had moved.

My courage disappeared.

“Work has been getting to me,” I said.

He nodded.

“You need to slow down.”

“I know.”

He reached for his glass.

The conversation ended.

I spent the rest of dinner wishing I had said something and feeling relieved that I had not.

That was the pattern now.

Every time I stayed silent, I felt safer for a moment.

Then the questions returned.

I began to understand that silence was not solving anything.

It was only postponing the moment when I would have to decide what to do.

After dinner, I washed the dishes while Dererick dried them.

We worked side by side.

He handed me a plate.

I washed it.

He placed it on the rack.

It was a routine we had shared for years.

For a moment, the familiarity almost comforted me.

Then he reached for the mug with the chipped handle.

I watched him turn it beneath the water.

He rinsed it and handed it back to me.

I held the mug in my wet hands.

The chipped edge pressed against my thumb.

I could not explain why that small imperfection suddenly mattered so much.

Perhaps it reminded me that familiar things could carry memories I did not want.

Perhaps I was simply tired.

I placed the mug on the rack.

Dererick glanced at me.

“You all right?”

“Yes.”

The answer came automatically.

He continued drying the dishes.

I stared at the mug until he put the towel away.

Later, I sat alone in the bedroom while he finished something downstairs.

I looked at the clock.

I had begun to notice the time whenever I entered the room.

The numbers were not showing 2:17.

Still, I remembered the night clearly.

I remembered waking into fear without moving a muscle.

I remembered wondering whether my own husband could see that I was afraid.

I remembered being grateful when he left the room, then terrified when he returned.

I had never felt so powerless.

I did not want to feel that way again.

I stood and walked to the window.

Outside, the evening was quiet.

A few lights glowed in neighboring homes.

People were finishing dinner, watching television, getting ready for bed.

They were living their ordinary lives.

I wondered how many of them had ever looked at someone they loved and realized they did not know what to believe.

The thought made me feel less alone, although it did not make me feel safer.

I turned away from the window.

I could not change what I had seen.

I could not make the bag disappear from my memory.

I could not recover the certainty I had lost.

But I could stop blaming myself for being afraid.

That was a small change.

It did not solve the mystery.

It did not tell me what Dererick had been doing.

It simply allowed me to admit that my fear deserved attention, even before I understood it.

When he came upstairs, I was already in bed.

He asked whether I wanted the light left on.

“No, that's fine.”

He switched it off and settled beside me.

I listened to him breathe.

For a while, I thought about turning toward him.

I thought about reaching for his hand.

I thought about how easy it had once been to do those things without asking myself whether I should.

I did not reach for him that night.

I lay on my side and watched the darkness.

I was still his wife.

I still remembered the good years.

But I was beginning to understand that loving someone did not require me to ignore the things that frightened me.

I could care about him and still need answers.

I could remember his kindness and still question what I had seen.

Those truths did not cancel each other out.

They simply made the situation harder to bear.

And for the first time, I stopped telling myself that I had to choose between being a good wife and taking my own fear seriously.

<a
