If something made me happy, he was the first person I wanted to tell.

Now I kept the most important thing to myself.

I could not explain what I was doing without admitting that I no longer felt safe enough to be honest.

That realization hurt.

One evening, I found him standing in the kitchen with the cupboard open.

He was reaching for the mug with the chipped handle.

I stopped in the doorway.

He looked over.

“Want some tea?”

I shook my head.

“Not tonight.”

He took down a different cup for himself.

“All right.”

I watched him fill the kettle.

There was no obvious reason to be afraid.

He was doing something he had done many times before.

Yet I could not stop watching his hands.

I noticed how he held the spoon.

I noticed when he opened the honey jar.

I noticed the small pause before he turned toward the sink.

I wondered whether he could tell that I was watching.

When he glanced at me again, I looked away.

I hated how quickly I had learned to hide.

Later, we sat together in the living room.

The television was on, and the room was lit by a single lamp. Dererick had his feet stretched out in front of him while I sat at the other end of the sofa.

He asked me about a message I had received earlier.

I answered.

He asked another question.

I answered that one too.

Our conversation moved from work to groceries to a small repair that needed attention.

Nothing unusual.

Nothing difficult.

At one point, he laughed at something on the television.

I laughed too, although I had not heard the joke.

He turned toward me.

“You seem distracted lately.”

I felt my shoulders tighten.

“Just tired.”

“You've said that a lot.”

I looked at the screen.

“It's been a busy week.”

He watched me for another moment.

Then he nodded and returned his attention to the program.

I had no way of knowing whether he believed me.

I could not even tell whether he was genuinely concerned.

That uncertainty had begun to affect everything.

I no longer knew how to interpret a kind gesture without searching for another meaning.

I no longer knew how to receive affection without wondering what it concealed.

Sometimes I missed the woman I had been before I heard that first sound in the bedroom.

She had not been foolish.

She had simply believed that the person she married was someone she could trust.

I wished I could return to that kind of certainty.

I knew I could not force it.

The next morning, I woke early and went downstairs before Dererick.

I made coffee and sat at the kitchen table.

The house was quiet.

I looked toward the cupboard where we kept the mugs.

The chipped one was visible through the slightly open door.

I had begun to think of that cup as a kind of witness.

It had been present when I first felt afraid.

It had been present when I poured away the tea.

It had been present when Dererick asked whether I had drunk it.

It had done nothing wrong.

Neither had I.

At least, I had done nothing that explained why I now felt like a stranger in my own kitchen.

I closed the cupboard.

When Dererick came downstairs, he found me already dressed.

“You're up early.”

“I couldn't sleep.”

He went to the coffee machine.

“Again?”

I nodded.

He looked at me with an expression I had once found comforting.

“Maybe you should take it easy tonight.”

“I'll try.”

He brought his coffee to the table and sat across from me.

For a while, we drank in silence.

I wanted to ask him where he had gone with the bag.

I wanted to ask why he had been wearing gloves.

I wanted to ask what he had been doing while I lay in bed pretending not to see him.

Instead, I asked whether he had a busy day ahead.

He told me he did.

I nodded.

That was how our mornings had become.

I asked questions that did not matter because I was afraid to ask the one that did.

Later that week, I found myself standing in the kitchen while Dererick prepared dinner.

He was cutting vegetables on the wooden board.

The knife moved steadily through the food.

I watched him work.

He glanced up.

“Can you pass me the salt?”

I handed it over.

“Thanks.”

He continued cooking.

I looked at his hands again.

They were bare.

There was nothing unusual about them.

I felt ashamed of the thought that had crossed my mind.

I was turning my husband into someone I could not recognize without knowing whether he deserved it.

But I could not forget what I had seen.

The gloves had been real.

The bag had been real.

My fear was real too, even if I did not yet understand its cause.

I had to learn to live with that uncertainty without allowing it to decide every part of my life.

That was easier to say than to do.

After dinner, Dererick offered to make tea.

I declined.

He gave me a small smile.

“Still not in the mood?”

“Not lately.”

He set the kettle down.

“You used to like it.”

“I know.”

He studied me briefly.

Then he changed the subject.

I went upstairs a little later and sat on the edge of the bed.

The room was quiet.

I looked at the dresser, the doorway, and the place where I remembered him standing with the black bag.

I had replayed that night so often that I could no longer tell whether every detail was as clear as I remembered or whether repetition had made the memory sharper.

But the essential facts remained.

He had put on gloves.

He had carried a bag.

He had looked toward me while believing I was asleep.

And he had done it more than once.

I pressed my palms against my knees.

I could not keep pretending those facts would disappear if I ignored them.

I needed an explanation.

I needed to know what I was afraid of.

Most of all, I needed to stop allowing the fear of being wrong to keep me silent.

I did not yet know what my next step would be.

But I knew that the old routine was gone.

The tea could sit untouched.

The mug could remain in the cupboard.

The kitchen could look exactly as it always had.

None of it would make me the same woman who had once accepted a cup from her husband without a second thought.

<a
