I noticed whether the kitchen cupboards had been left open. I noticed where Dererick placed his phone when he sat down for dinner.

None of those details told me anything useful.

Still, I watched.

I had always believed that being observant was a good thing. It helped me remember birthdays, notice when someone was upset, and catch mistakes before they became problems.

Now it felt like a habit I could not control.

I was searching for something without knowing what it looked like.

That made every ordinary day feel longer than it should have.

Dererick continued being Dererick.

He asked about my work.

He remembered the things I needed from the store.

He reminded me to take a jacket when the evenings turned cold.

Sometimes I watched him do something kind and felt ashamed.

He had not stopped caring for me.

At least, he had not stopped behaving as though he cared.

I could not make those two statements mean the same thing anymore.

One evening, I was sitting at the kitchen table with my laptop open when he came in.

He looked at the screen.

“Still working?”

“Almost finished.”

He glanced at the clock.

“You've been at it for hours.”

“I know.”

He opened the cupboard and reached for the familiar mug.

My attention shifted to his hand.

He took down the cup with the chipped handle, placed it on the counter, and filled the kettle.

I watched him move around the kitchen.

He measured the tea.

He added honey.

He waited for the water to heat.

It was a routine I had seen dozens of times.

Perhaps hundreds.

I had never paid attention to the order of those movements before.

Now I could not look away.

He carried the mug to the table and set it beside my laptop.

“Here you go.”

I looked at the tea.

Then I looked at him.

“Thanks.”

He touched my shoulder briefly before moving away.

I waited until he was gone.

The mug remained beside me, giving off a thin stream of steam.

I did not pick it up.

I tried to work.

I answered one email, then another. I reread the same paragraph several times without understanding it.

The tea cooled beside my hand.

I kept thinking about the black bag.

I had seen it only once, but the image had settled into my mind with a clarity that made it difficult to dismiss.

The gloves were just as clear.

So was the time.

2:17.

I could still picture the blue glow from the clock and the way Dererick had held himself near the dresser.

I could still remember how carefully he had moved.

I had no explanation for any of it.

That was why I had to stop pretending the tea was harmless simply because it looked harmless.

I pushed the chair back and picked up the mug.

For a moment, I held it in both hands.

The warmth felt familiar.

So did the smell.

Chamomile and honey.

There was nothing obviously wrong with the drink.

I had known that the first time.

I knew it now.

I walked into the kitchen.

The house was quiet, and I could hear Dererick moving upstairs.

I looked toward the staircase.

Then I looked down at the mug.

My hands were trembling again.

I felt foolish.

I felt frightened.

I felt angry that I had reached a point where I could not accept a simple kindness without questioning what it meant.

But I could not bring myself to drink it.

I tipped the tea into the sink.

The liquid swirled around the drain, leaving the ceramic empty.

I rinsed the mug and watched the water run over the inside.

I had done this before.

The memory made my chest tighten.

I was repeating the same action, standing in the same kitchen, hoping that the same small decision might keep me safe.

I did not know whether it would.

I only knew I was unwilling to take the chance.

I placed the mug back where Dererick usually kept it.

Then I dried my hands and returned to my laptop.

When he came downstairs, he glanced toward the table.

“Did you drink your tea?”

The question caught me off guard.

I turned from the screen.

“Not yet.”

He looked at the empty space beside the laptop.

“You should have it before it gets cold.”

“I will.”

He nodded.

Then he went into the kitchen.

I heard the cupboard open.

A moment later, he returned with a glass of water for himself.

He sat down across from me and began talking about something that had happened during his day.

I listened.

I answered when I was supposed to.

I even laughed once.

From the outside, nothing had changed.

That was the strange thing about fear.

It could take up every inch of your mind while the world around you carried on as if nothing had happened.

After a while, Dererick went upstairs again.

I remained at the table.

I could have told him the truth.

I could have said I had poured the tea away because I was afraid of what might be in it.

But I did not know how to explain the fear without making it sound like an accusation.

I had no test results.

No proof.

No explanation for the gloves or the bag.

I had only my memory and the growing sense that I could no longer trust the comfort of our routines.

So I kept quiet.

That night, I went upstairs and prepared for bed.

I brushed my teeth, washed my face, and changed into my usual pajamas.

I placed my phone on the nightstand and checked that the alarm was set.

Then I looked at the clock.

It was still early.

I got into bed and turned off the lamp.

I did not intend to stay awake for hours.

I did not intend to watch my husband.

I told myself that I would sleep and deal with my fears in the morning.

For a while, I almost believed it.

Then Dererick came into the bedroom.

He moved around quietly.

I heard him place something on his nightstand and open a drawer. He went into the bathroom, and the faucet ran briefly.

I closed my eyes.

The mattress shifted when he returned.

I listened to his breathing.

It was steady and familiar.

I remembered nights when I had fallen asleep with my hand resting against his arm. I remembered waking to find that he had pulled the covers over my shoulder.

Those memories hurt in a way I had not expected.

They were real.

Whatever was happening now, the good parts of our marriage had not been imaginary.

That made the possibility of something terrible harder to accept.

I lay on my side and tried to let the past settle.

I could hear the air conditioner humming.

I could hear the faint ticking of the clock.

Then I heard Dererick move.

I opened my eyes just enough to see him sit up.

He remained still for a moment.

Then he got out of bed.

I held my breath.

He crossed the room.

A drawer opened.

Something shifted inside it.

I wanted to turn around.

I wanted to see what he was doing.

But I remembered the way he had looked toward the bed the first time, and I forced myself to remain still.

He moved farther away.

I could hear him handling something near the dresser.

A small sound followed.

Then another.

I recognized the faint pull of material being stretched over a hand.

My stomach tightened.

I knew that sound.

I had heard it before.

I kept my eyes almost closed and watched the shape of my husband in the darkness.

He was wearing gloves again.

I could see enough to know that much.

Then he reached down and picked up the compact black bag.

The same bag.

For several seconds, I forgot to breathe.

I had spent days wondering whether I had misunderstood what I saw the first time. I had searched for harmless explanations and tried to convince myself that fear had distorted an ordinary moment.

Now the gloves were back.

The bag was back.

And Dererick was standing beside our bed as if nothing about his behavior required an explanation.

I felt the last of my excuses begin to fall away.

I did not know what he intended to do.

I did not know what was inside the bag.

I did not know whether the tea had anything to do with what I was seeing.

But I knew I could not keep telling myself that I had imagined the whole thing.

I stayed still.

I watched.

And when my husband turned toward the bedroom door, I understood that the next few minutes might tell me more than all the ordinary days that had come before them.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: I Stayed Motionless While Dererick Carried the Black Bag Away, Afraid That One Wrong Movement Would Change Everything

The decision to pay attention changed the way I moved through my own home.
