Time became difficult to measure when every sound seemed to carry a meaning.

Eventually, I heard a door close somewhere below me.

I waited another minute.

Then I opened my eyes.

The bedroom looked exactly as it had before.

The curtains were drawn. My laptop sat on the desk. A pile of laundry waited near the closet because I had promised myself I would fold it the previous evening.

Ordinary things.

That was what frightened me.

Nothing in the room looked as though a secret had just passed through it.

I sat up slowly and looked at the clock.

The blue numbers had moved beyond 2:17.

I glanced toward Dererick's side of the bed.

His pillow remained untouched.

For a moment, I wondered whether I should go downstairs and find him.

I could ask about the bag.

I could ask why he had worn gloves.

I could even laugh and tell him I had been awake and seen him.

But I could not make myself do it.

I was afraid of his answer.

More than that, I was afraid of how easily he might give me one.

Dererick had always been good at making things sound simple.

If I questioned a bill, he showed me the payment confirmation. If I worried about a noise outside, he checked the locks. If I mentioned that something felt wrong, he asked me to explain what I meant.

He never shouted me down.

He never needed to.

He could make me feel foolish without raising his voice.

I had always mistaken that ability for patience.

That night, I wondered whether it was something else.

I got out of bed and crossed to the doorway.

The hall was empty.

I stood there long enough to hear the refrigerator humming downstairs, then returned to the mattress.

I did not sleep again.

When morning finally came, I had already decided that I would say nothing.

Not because I trusted him.

Because I did not yet know what I was dealing with.

There was a difference, although I had not understood it before.

At breakfast, Dererick behaved as if the previous night had been no different from any other.

He stood in the kitchen preparing coffee while I sat at the table.

The gray socks I had lost the week before were folded neatly beside my chair.

He noticed me looking at them.

“Found those under the couch.”

I picked them up.

“Thanks.”

He smiled.

“You're always losing something.”

I almost asked him about the bag.

The question rose into my throat, but I swallowed it.

Instead, I pulled the socks onto my feet.

He went back to the coffee machine.

I watched him from across the room, searching for a sign that he knew I had been awake.

There was nothing obvious.

He asked whether I wanted eggs.

He reminded me that I had a meeting later in the week.

He told me the weather might turn colder.

The conversation was so ordinary that I began to doubt myself again.

Maybe I had misunderstood what I saw.

Maybe the gloves were for something harmless.

Maybe the black bag belonged to a task I had forgotten he mentioned.

But I remembered the way he had stood beside the bed.

I remembered the way he had looked toward the door.

And I remembered the tea.

That was the part I could not dismiss.

For the next few days, I paid attention to things I had once ignored.

I noticed when Dererick entered a room and glanced at what I was doing before speaking.

I noticed how often he asked whether I had eaten.

I noticed that he seemed particularly interested in whether I had slept well.

None of those things was suspicious on its own.

That was the problem.

Concern could look exactly like concern.

A question could be nothing more than a question.

And a husband who made tea for his wife could simply be a husband who wanted to make tea for his wife.

I knew that.

I also knew I had begun watching his hands.

When he prepared dinner, I watched him reach for the utensils.

When he opened a cupboard, I watched what he took out.

When he handed me something, I noticed whether he looked at me afterward.

I hated myself for doing it.

There was a small, ugly part of me that wanted him to catch me looking so I could stop pretending that everything was normal.

Another part wanted him never to notice.

I did not know which feeling frightened me more.

On the fourth evening, he offered to make my tea.

I was standing near the kitchen counter, sorting through a stack of mail.

He opened the cupboard and took down the familiar mug.

The one with the small chip near the handle.

He filled the kettle.

I watched the steam begin to rise.

“Chamomile again?” I asked.

He looked over his shoulder.

“You've been drinking it every night.”

“I could have something else.”

He paused briefly.

Then he smiled.

“Of course. Whatever you want.”

He said it without irritation.

That made me feel worse.

I could have told him that I no longer wanted tea.

I could have said I was trying to cut back on honey or that I had become tired of the taste.

Instead, I told him I was not thirsty.

He put the kettle aside.

“No problem.”

He did not insist.

He did not ask why.

He simply placed the mug back in the cupboard and went on with what he had been doing.

I stood there for several seconds after he left the kitchen.

I had expected resistance.

I had expected him to encourage me to drink it, perhaps with a joke about how much I needed to relax.

But he had accepted my refusal so easily that I could not decide whether it meant anything.

I began to understand how little I actually knew.

I knew the version of Dererick who bought groceries, remembered appointments, and brought me socks.

I knew the version who could sit across from me at dinner and talk about his day.

I knew how he smiled when I made a joke and how he rubbed his forehead when work frustrated him.

But what did I know about the man who walked around our bedroom at two in the morning?

The question followed me through the house.

I tried to focus on ordinary responsibilities.

I answered emails.

I cleaned the kitchen.

I folded the laundry and put the gray socks in my drawer.

Every time I reached for a familiar object, I wondered whether I had overlooked something about it.

I was becoming suspicious of the life I had built.

That was exhausting.

It was also humiliating.

I had been married to this man long enough to believe that I understood him. Admitting that I did not know what he was capable of felt like admitting I had failed at something everyone else seemed to manage.

I did not tell anyone.

I had no evidence I could explain without sounding uncertain.

What would I say?

My husband made me tea, and one night I poured it away because something about the way he smiled made me uncomfortable.

I had seen him wearing gloves in our bedroom.

He had carried a black bag.

He had looked toward the bed.

Those were facts.

Everything else was fear.

So I kept the facts to myself and watched.

The next time Dererick offered to make tea, I declined again.

He glanced at me.

“You sure?”

“I'm fine.”

“All right.”

He put the kettle away.

Then he came over and kissed my forehead.

I stood still while he did it.

His touch was familiar.

His expression was familiar.

I knew the faint lines beside his eyes, the way he tilted his head when he was trying to read my mood.

I had once found those things comforting.

Now I wondered whether I had spent years learning the details of a person who had been learning mine for reasons I did not understand.

I went upstairs that night before he did.

I left the bedroom door open and kept the lamp on.

I told myself I wanted to read.

In truth, I wanted to see whether he would behave differently when he thought I was awake.

He entered later and found me sitting against the headboard with a book open in my lap.

He looked at the page.

“Still reading?”

“Trying to finish this.”

He nodded.

“Don't stay up too late.”

He changed clothes and went into the bathroom.

I listened to the water running.

Then I looked down at the book.

I had not read a single sentence.

When he returned, he switched off the lamp and climbed into bed.

He did not reach for a bag.

He did not put on gloves.

He settled beside me and closed his eyes.

For a few minutes, I waited for something else to happen.

Nothing did.

Eventually, his breathing slowed.

I lay awake beside him, staring into the darkness.

It would have been easier if he had behaved strangely every night.

It would have been easier if I could point to one clear moment and say that was when everything changed.

Instead, he gave me ordinary days.

He gave me ordinary conversations.

He gave me every reason to feel guilty for doubting him.

And somewhere inside those ordinary things, I kept remembering the mug.

The next morning, I washed it myself.

I held it under the tap longer than necessary and watched the water run over the chipped handle.

Then I placed it upside down on the drying rack.

I did not know what I was looking for.

I only knew I was no longer willing to pretend I had seen nothing.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: I Wanted to Believe My Suspicions Were Foolish, Until His Familiar Kindness Made Me Question What I Had Been Missing

I did not get out of bed immediately.
