10 – The Memory of My Son’s Gratitude Still Hurt, but I Was Beginning to Understand Why It Could Not Be My Answer

I kept returning to one memory.

Daniel lifting me after the house purchase.

It lasted only a moment.

Perhaps that was why I remembered it so clearly.

A grown man with troublesome knees had been so relieved that he'd forgotten about them long enough to pick up his mother.

I had laughed.

He had laughed.

And for those few seconds, I had felt as though everything was exactly as it should be.

It was such a simple memory.

No complicated conversation.

No difficult explanation.

Just my son showing me he was grateful.

I had held on to that moment for eleven months.

Whenever I thought about the house, it came back.

And until that morning, it had always made me happy.

Now it seemed to ask a question.

What had changed?

I didn't know.

Perhaps nothing had changed in Daniel's feelings toward me.

Perhaps he'd simply handled the holiday badly.

Perhaps he believed the decision was reasonable and expected me to accept it.

I kept reminding myself that I couldn't know what he intended.

But I knew how the message felt.

It felt as though someone had taken a relationship I thought was secure and revealed a condition I hadn't known existed.

I could be part of Daniel's life.

Until it became inconvenient.

That was how it seemed.

I didn't know whether it was true.

The difference mattered.

I wasn't prepared to accuse my son of something I couldn't prove.

But I couldn't pretend the feeling wasn't there.

I had given him the house because I loved him.

That remained unchanged.

I had not purchased a right to supervise his household.

I had not purchased a guaranteed seat at Thanksgiving.

I had not purchased his obedience.

The gift had no such conditions.

I knew that when I made it.

I still knew it.

Yet some part of me had believed the gesture would be remembered in a way that made our relationship even stronger.

That was the expectation I was having trouble releasing.

Not that Daniel would repay me.

That he would remember me with tenderness.

Especially when making a decision that could hurt.

I wondered whether that was too much to expect.

Then I thought about how I would have handled the same situation if our places were reversed.

If I needed to tell Daniel he couldn't attend a gathering, I wouldn't have wanted to make him feel unwanted.

I would have thought about the words.

I would have tried to explain.

I would have recognized that he might be disappointed.

I might still have made the same decision.

But I would have wanted him to know that his feelings mattered.

That was what I hadn't found in Daniel's message.

Consideration.

A small amount of care.

Something that acknowledged I was a person, not just a possible inconvenience.

I knew I was dwelling on it.

I couldn't help that.

The message was still recent.

I hadn't spoken to Daniel.

I had no new information.

Everything I knew about the situation fit on one phone screen.

But everything I felt about it came from forty years of being his mother.

That was why the words had so much weight.

A stranger could have sent the same message and it wouldn't have mattered.

An acquaintance could have excluded me from a gathering and I might have been briefly disappointed.

But Daniel was my son.

I had spent decades loving him.

I had been part of his life from its beginning.

That history didn't entitle me to control him.

But it meant his choices could hurt me in ways other people's choices couldn't.

I looked toward the window.

The rain was lighter for a moment.

Then it grew heavier again.

The gutter rattled against the wall.

I thought about the difference between the two houses.

Mine was familiar.

I knew its sounds.

The refrigerator downstairs.

The loose gutter outside my bedroom.

The way the rain moved across the window.

Daniel's house was different.

It was newer to him.

A place he and Sarah were still making their own.

I had been pleased about that.

I wanted them to develop their own routines there.

I wanted them to plant trees.

I wanted them to make choices about the rooms and the yard.

I wanted the house to become theirs in every meaningful way.

That had been the entire point of the purchase.

But perhaps I hadn't thought carefully enough about what giving them the house meant for me.

Once it was theirs, it was theirs.

Their home.

Their decisions.

Their guests.

Their holidays.

I had understood that legally.

I had accepted it willingly.

What I hadn't anticipated was how painful it might feel when one of their decisions excluded me.

That was the part I needed to face honestly.

I couldn't claim to believe in their independence only when their choices pleased me.

If Daniel and Sarah wanted a smaller Thanksgiving gathering, they had the right to arrange one.

That was true even if I disliked it.

But their right to decide didn't make Daniel's message considerate.

Those were separate matters.

I wished I'd understood that immediately.

Instead, I'd spent the morning moving between anger and guilt.

Anger because I felt dismissed.

Guilt because I kept thinking about the money.

Each feeling seemed to cancel the other.

If I was angry, perhaps I was being selfish.

If I mentioned the house, perhaps I was being controlling.

If I said nothing, perhaps I was preserving the relationship.

But silence wasn't necessarily generosity.

And honesty wasn't necessarily a demand.

I was beginning to see that.

I could tell Daniel I was disappointed without insisting he change his plans.

I could ask him to speak to me more thoughtfully without suggesting he owed me because of the house.

I could accept that he was an adult and still expect him to treat his mother kindly.

The difficulty was not understanding those possibilities.

It was trusting myself to act on them.

I had always preferred keeping family disagreements small.

An impatient comment could be overlooked.

A forgotten occasion could be forgiven.

A missed visit could be explained by a busy schedule.

Most of the time, that approach worked.

There wasn't much value in arguing over every disappointment.

But sometimes the thing that happened wasn't small to the person experiencing it.

Thanksgiving mattered to me.

Being included mattered.

The way Daniel had spoken mattered.

I couldn't make those facts disappear by telling myself that other people had worse problems.

They certainly did.

But that didn't make my feelings imaginary.

I thought about the two pear trees.

I liked them as an image of the future.

Small now.

Larger later.

Something Daniel and Sarah could care for together.

When they'd planted them, I had been glad they were putting down roots.

That phrase came to me naturally.

Putting down roots.

It made me think of the house again.

A permanent place.

A chance to settle.

I had helped give them that.

I didn't regret it.

But I wondered whether I had confused helping them put down roots with securing my own place beside them.

The trees belonged to their yard.

The house belonged to their life.

My relationship with Daniel had to exist independently of both.

If it couldn't, then the money had never solved the thing I was now worried about.

It had only hidden it from view.

I didn't know whether anything had truly been hidden.

That was important.

I had no evidence of some larger problem.

I had only a painful message and my reaction to it.

I needed to be careful.

I didn't want to create a story in my head about Daniel becoming ungrateful or Sarah pushing me away.

I didn't know enough to say either thing was true.

All I knew was that I'd expected to attend Thanksgiving and had been told not to.

That was enough to justify feeling hurt.

It wasn't enough to justify deciding what kind of people Daniel and Sarah had become.

I could see that distinction now.

It gave me a little peace.

Not comfort.

Not yet.

But a way to think without becoming unfair.

I picked up the phone again.

I read Daniel's message.

This time, I noticed how little it actually explained.

Sarah's family wanted something.

Daniel communicated the result.

I was expected to accept it.

There was no description of a conversation.

No reason why my absence was necessary.

No acknowledgment that Thanksgiving had meaning to me too.

I wondered whether Daniel would explain if I asked.

I hoped he would.

But I couldn't make his willingness to explain the condition of my own calm.

I had to decide how I wanted to behave regardless of his response.

I didn't want to retaliate.

I didn't want to remind him of every sacrifice I'd made.

I didn't want to tell him I'd made a mistake buying the house.

That would be cruel.

And it wouldn't be true.

I had given the house freely.

I would not rewrite that decision simply because I was disappointed.

But I also wouldn't rewrite his message into something kinder than it was.

He had hurt me.

That was true too.

I sat holding those two facts together.

For a long time, I'd been trying to choose between them.

Either I was a generous mother who shouldn't complain.

Or I was a hurt mother who had a right to be angry.

But I was both.

I had been generous.

And I was hurt.

The gift didn't remove my feelings.

The hurt didn't invalidate the gift.

I wished I could explain that to Daniel without making him defensive.

Perhaps I would.

Perhaps I wouldn't find the right words.

I couldn't know yet.

But I knew I didn't want our next conversation to be about three hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

That wasn't the heart of the matter.

The heart of the matter was smaller.

And much harder.

I wanted my son to care whether I felt welcome in his life.

Not because I'd bought him a home.

Because I was his mother.

I looked again at the place where I could type a reply.

I had not forgotten the message.

I wasn't going to.

But I was beginning to understand that my response couldn't come from the memory of Daniel thanking me.

It had to come from the reality of how we treated each other now.

The past explained why I was hurt.

It couldn't decide what I should do next.

That was a decision I had to make for myself.

<a
