9 – I Had Spent the Morning Protecting Daniel From My Feelings, and Finally Wondered Who Was Supposed to Protect Mine

The first thing I noticed was how quiet my bedroom had become.

Not completely quiet.

The rain was still falling.

The loose gutter still made its uneven knocking sound.

But I had stopped reaching for my phone every few minutes.

That was something.

For most of the morning, I had been treating Daniel's message like a problem I could solve if I examined it carefully enough.

I read it.

I questioned it.

I remembered things.

Then I read it again.

Nothing changed.

His decision remained the same.

And I was no closer to understanding why he'd made it.

I sat with that uncomfortable truth for a while.

Maybe there wasn't anything else to understand.

Maybe Daniel had simply chosen a Thanksgiving gathering that didn't include me.

Maybe he believed the explanation he'd provided was enough.

I didn't know.

The uncertainty bothered me, but I was beginning to recognize something else.

I had spent hours worrying about how Daniel might feel if I told him I was hurt.

I hadn't given myself the same consideration.

That realization was unpleasant.

I was sixty years old.

I had raised a son.

I had managed difficult decisions.

I had signed papers involving three hundred and fifty thousand dollars without needing anyone to tell me what to think.

Yet one message from Daniel had left me afraid to express an ordinary feeling.

Disappointment.

That was the word.

It sounded almost too mild.

Still, it was accurate.

I was disappointed in my son.

I didn't enjoy admitting it.

For forty years, I had been accustomed to looking for explanations when Daniel did something that upset me.

Sometimes those explanations were sensible.

Children became distracted.

Young adults made mistakes.

Grown people had responsibilities that their parents didn't always understand.

I knew all that.

I had told myself those things many times.

But I wondered whether I'd become so practiced at understanding Daniel that I had forgotten to expect him to understand me.

That possibility stayed with me.

I wasn't asking for perfection.

I didn't need every holiday to happen exactly as I imagined.

I didn't expect Daniel and Sarah to consult me whenever they made plans.

They were married.

They had their own household.

I respected that.

But respect didn't require me to pretend a painful decision was painless.

And it certainly didn't require me to accept the suggestion that my feelings were a nuisance.

I picked up the phone.

Daniel's name appeared above the message.

I looked at it for several seconds.

There was a time when seeing his name had meant something simple.

My son wanted to speak to me.

Now I was examining it with caution.

I hated that change.

I didn't want to become someone who felt anxious when her child contacted her.

But I couldn't deny what had happened.

I had woken to his message expecting an ordinary conversation.

Instead, I had been told to stay away from Thanksgiving.

And the instruction had come without the courtesy of a discussion.

I tried imagining the same words spoken aloud.

Daniel standing in front of me.

His voice calm.

Perhaps a little impatient.

I could almost hear him explaining that Sarah's relatives wanted fewer guests.

Then telling me not to argue.

Would I have accepted it differently?

Perhaps.

At least I would have been able to ask a question.

I could have looked at his face.

I could have heard whether he sounded uncomfortable.

I could have told him how I felt without spending hours choosing the perfect response.

A phone message didn't allow that.

It left me alone with his decision.

I turned the phone over.

The screen disappeared.

That helped for a moment.

Then my thoughts returned to the house.

They always did.

I wondered whether I'd ever be able to think about that brick building without remembering this morning.

I hoped so.

Eleven months earlier, the house had represented something happy.

A fresh beginning for Daniel and Sarah.

A place with two stories, a separate garage, and a backyard where they could plant things and watch them grow.

I had liked the neighborhood.

The old maple trees gave the street a settled appearance.

The house wasn't extravagant.

It was comfortable.

Practical.

A place to live.

I remembered feeling relieved when everything was completed.

The documents had been signed.

The money had been transferred.

Daniel and Sarah had a home.

That was what mattered.

I had not imagined sitting in my own bedroom less than a year later, worrying about whether I belonged inside it.

The thought still shocked me.

I could understand that I didn't own the house.

That was never the issue.

I had given it to them.

I wanted them to make it theirs.

But I hadn't expected my relationship with Daniel to feel less certain afterward.

Perhaps the house had nothing to do with his decision.

I had to allow for that.

There wasn't any evidence connecting the purchase to the Thanksgiving arrangement.

The connection existed in my feelings.

It was the contrast that troubled me.

He had accepted something enormous from me.

Now he was asking me to accept something painful from him.

Without discussion.

Without much explanation.

And without making him uncomfortable.

That was difficult to reconcile.

I looked toward the bedroom window.

Water ran down the glass.

The gutter rattled.

I had been meaning to have it repaired, but I'd kept putting it off.

The noise reminded me of something I'd been avoiding.

A small problem didn't disappear because you learned to live around it.

You could become accustomed to the sound.

You could tell yourself it wasn't serious.

But the problem remained.

I wondered whether I'd been doing something similar with Daniel.

I didn't want to exaggerate.

I couldn't claim our entire relationship had been troubled.

I had no reason to turn every forgotten birthday or missed visit into proof that he didn't care.

That would have been unfair.

But perhaps I'd been too quick to dismiss things simply because I didn't want disagreements.

Sometimes I'd told myself that being a good mother meant making life easier for my son.

That belief had guided many choices.

I helped when I could.

I didn't complain unnecessarily.

I tried not to interfere.

And when Daniel needed something I could provide, I usually provided it.

The house had been the largest example.

Three hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

I could still remember the strange nervousness of signing those papers.

I knew what I was doing.

I knew how much I was giving.

But the emotional meaning had seemed greater than the money.

Daniel was going to have a home.

He would have security.

Sarah would have security too.

I had been proud to make that possible.

I didn't regret helping them.

That was important.

I needed to say it to myself without qualification.

I didn't regret the gift.

I regretted discovering how uncertain my place in Daniel's life could feel afterward.

Those were two different things.

And confusing them wouldn't help either of us.

I sat back against the pillows.

The room had become fully gray with daylight.

I wondered whether Daniel had started his day normally.

Maybe he was drinking coffee.

Maybe he was occupied with something unrelated to Thanksgiving.

I had no way of knowing.

The thought that this might be an ordinary morning for him hurt more than I expected.

For me, the message had changed the entire day.

I had barely thought about anything else.

Perhaps that was the difference between sending a painful message and receiving one.

The person sending it could finish the conversation before the other person had even begun to understand what it meant.

I tried not to resent him for that.

But resentment was beginning to creep into my thoughts.

Quietly.

Not with anger or shouting.

With questions.

Why had he chosen a text?

Why had he sent it so early?

Why had he assumed I would be difficult?

Why hadn't he asked how I would feel?

I couldn't answer any of them.

So I stopped trying.

For the first time, I let myself think about Thanksgiving without immediately picturing Daniel's house.

It was just a day.

A holiday.

A gathering I had expected to attend.

I could survive not being invited.

I knew that.

I had survived disappointments before.

But surviving something wasn't the same as believing it was acceptable.

I could respect Daniel's decision without agreeing with how he delivered it.

That distinction gave me a little room to think.

I didn't have to force an invitation.

I didn't have to punish him.

I didn't have to pretend.

I could simply acknowledge that he had hurt me.

I wished he had made that easier.

Then I realized I was doing it again.

I was waiting for Daniel to make my feelings easier to express.

I had spent so much time imagining his reaction that I was neglecting my own.

Would he be angry?

Would he say I was overreacting?

Would he think I was using the house against him?

I couldn't know.

Those were possibilities, not facts.

And I couldn't build my entire response around things I imagined he might say.

I had to decide what I believed.

Not what would keep him most comfortable.

I believed he had the right to plan his holiday.

I believed I had the right to feel disappointed.

I believed money shouldn't purchase family affection.

And I believed family affection should include basic consideration.

None of those beliefs contradicted the others.

I had only been treating them as though they did.

The phone lay beside me.

I wasn't going to send an angry message.

That decision remained firm.

But another decision was beginning to form.

I would no longer treat my hurt as something shameful.

If Daniel wanted an honest relationship with me, honesty couldn't belong only to him.

He could tell me what he wanted.

I could tell him how his choice affected me.

Neither of us had to agree with the other.

But we should be able to speak.

I remembered how small Daniel had once been.

How completely he'd trusted me.

How quickly he had grown.

Now he was forty years old.

A grown man.

A husband.

A homeowner.

I was proud of the life he had built.

I was proud that I'd been able to help.

But I couldn't keep treating his discomfort as more important than my own feelings.

That wasn't kindness.

At least, it wasn't kindness to myself.

I looked at his message once more.

It hadn't become easier to read.

Perhaps it never would.

I still felt excluded.

I still thought about the house.

I still wondered why Sarah's family had been allowed to determine something that affected me so directly.

But I also felt a little steadier.

I didn't need to settle everything before answering.

I didn't need to understand every motive.

I only needed to tell the truth without turning it into an accusation.

I placed the phone on the nightstand.

Outside, the rain continued.

The gutter knocked once against the wall.

And I finally admitted something I should have recognized much earlier.

I had been so concerned about protecting my relationship with Daniel that I'd forgotten I was part of that relationship too.

My feelings mattered.

Even when they were inconvenient.

Even when my son preferred not to hear them.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Memory of My
