I need to understand what you mean when you say you want to make things right. I'm not ready to meet or return home, and I need you to respect that while I think.

I read it several times.

My fingers hovered above the screen.

I worried that the message sounded cold.

I worried that it sounded hopeful.

I worried that Derek would decide I was being unfair because I had not accepted his apology.

Then I remembered that I was not responsible for making the message feel good to him.

I was responsible for saying what I meant.

I sent it.

His response came almost immediately.

I mean I love you. I don't know what else you want from me.

My chest tightened.

There it was.

The familiar shift from apology to frustration.

I could feel the old pressure rising in me.

I wanted to reassure him that I did not expect him to know everything immediately.

I wanted to say that I was not asking for perfection.

I wanted to comfort him because his frustration made me uncomfortable.

But I had not asked him to become perfect.

I had asked him to understand why I had left.

I wrote a response, then read it before sending.

I'm not asking you to solve everything in one message. I'm asking for space and for you to acknowledge what happened without making my decision to leave the problem. I will contact you when I'm ready to discuss practical arrangements.

I sent it and put the phone in a drawer.

For the next hour, I did not check it.

I worked on my project.

I made a cup of tea.

I stood by the window and watched a delivery driver carry a package to the neighbor's porch.

Ordinary things continued around me.

When I finally checked my phone, Derek had not replied.

I felt both relieved and anxious.

I was beginning to see how much of my day had been shaped by waiting for his next reaction.

Even when he was not in the room, I was making space for his possible anger.

I had been doing it for so long that it felt like a normal part of being married.

That evening, I asked my father if we could talk.

We sat in the living room, where the light from the lamp fell across the arm of his chair.

“I don't want you to think I'm deciding everything based on one bad night,” I said.

He looked at me carefully.

“I'm not asking you to decide based on one night.”

“I know, but I keep thinking about the good parts.
