I just don't want you to think I don't trust you.”

“Emily, I'm your father. I'm not supposed to be the only person you can talk to.”

His answer made my eyes sting.

I looked down at my plate.

He gave me a minute before asking whether I wanted him to help me find a local support service.

I said I did.

We sat together at the table and looked through information on his laptop.

I read slowly.

Some pages explained safety planning.

Others described ways people could get confidential advice about controlling or violent partners.

I was surprised by how many things sounded familiar.

The descriptions did not require me to decide what my whole marriage meant.

They asked smaller questions.

Was I afraid of my partner's reaction?

Did I change my behavior to prevent an argument?

Did I feel free to say no?

I answered those questions silently.

More than once, the answer was yes.

I wrote down a number and saved it in my phone.

I was not ready to call that morning.

My father did not push me.

Instead, we discussed what I might need from home.

My laptop.

My work documents.

Medication I kept in the bathroom cabinet.

A few changes of clothes.

The small jewelry box containing my grandmother's earrings.

We made a list on a sheet of paper.

I wrote each item in my own handwriting.

The list was practical, which helped.

It gave me something to do without requiring me to decide whether my marriage was over.

When we finished, I folded the paper and put it in my bag.

My phone vibrated again.

Derek was calling.

I stared at the screen until the ringing stopped.

A minute later, a message appeared.

I just want to hear your voice.

I read it twice.

There had been a time when those words would have softened me immediately.

I would have called him back, relieved that he seemed to miss me.

I would have listened to his voice and searched for the familiar warmth that had first made me fall in love with him.

But I could not tell whether he wanted to hear my voice because he missed me or because he wanted to know whether I was still willing to respond.

Maybe he did not even know the difference himself.

I could not answer that question from a text message.

I put the phone away.

My father took the breakfast plates to the sink.

“I think I want to call the support number,” I said.

He stopped what he was doing.

“All right.”

“Can I do it here?”

“Of course.”

He dried his hands and left the kitchen so I could have privacy.

I sat at the table with the paper list beside me.

The number looked ordinary on the screen.

My finger hovered over it.

I almost put the phone down.

Then I remembered the birthday dinner.

My father had looked at my face once and asked everyone else to stop talking.

He had seen what I had been trying to hide.

I pressed call.

The person who answered spoke calmly and asked how they could help.

At first, I could barely get the words out.

I said I had left my home after an incident with my husband.

I said I was staying with my father.

I said I did not know what I wanted to do about the marriage.

The person on the other end did not ask me to make that decision.

They asked whether I was safe at that moment.

I said yes.

They asked whether my husband knew where I was.

I said he knew I was with my father, but he did not have a reason to come there.

They asked whether I was worried he might try to reach me in person.

I paused.

“I don't know,” I admitted.

“That uncertainty is worth taking seriously,” they said.

We talked about the next few days.

We discussed collecting my belongings, keeping my phone charged, and making sure important documents were accessible.

They encouraged me to choose someone I trusted to accompany me if I went home.

They also reminded me that I did not need to meet Derek alone just because he wanted to talk.

Nothing they said forced me to decide what came next.

That helped more than I expected.

When the call ended, I stayed at the table for a while.

My hands were cold.

I had not realized how much effort it took to say the truth aloud to a stranger.

My father came back into the kitchen after I called him.

“How was it?”

“Hard.”

He pulled out the chair across from me.

“But helpful,” I added.

“I'm glad.”

I told him the main things we had discussed.

He listened, then asked whether I wanted him to accompany me when I collected my belongings.

“Yes.”

“Then we'll arrange it carefully.”

I looked at the folded list beside my bag.

For the first time that morning, the house I had left did not feel like a place I had to return to immediately.

It was a place where my things were waiting.

That was different.

I could go back for what I needed without pretending that everything was fine.

I could make a plan without promising Derek anything.

I could take one step and leave the next one undecided.

I still loved him.

That was the part I found hardest to explain, even to myself.

I loved the man who used to bring me coffee on Sunday mornings.

I loved the man who once drove across town because I had mentioned a book I wanted to read.

I loved the version of us I had carried into our marriage.

But love did not make the bruise less real.

And it did not make me feel safe enough to go home.

I folded the list again and slipped it into my bag.

Then I went upstairs to get dressed for work.

I had not solved anything.

But I had finally asked for help without first proving that I deserved it.
