We need to talk.

I read it slowly.

The words were not openly cruel.

They were almost the words I had wanted to hear the previous night.

But they did not mention the bruise.

They did not mention my fear.

They did not acknowledge that I had left because I did not feel safe.

They described the problem as a fight between two people who had simply stopped communicating.

I sat down.

My father was in the kitchen putting away the leftovers.

I could hear the refrigerator door open and close.

I thought about ignoring the message.

I thought about answering it.

Then I considered what I actually needed.

I needed Derek to know that I was not coming home that evening.

I needed him to understand that I was not ready to have a conversation in person.

I needed to say those things without getting pulled into a debate about whether my reasons were good enough.

I opened the message window.

My first draft was long.

I explained the argument, the bruise, the way I had felt at dinner, and the fear that had followed me into the spare room.

I tried to describe how many times I had changed my behavior to keep him calm.

I wrote that I was tired of being told that his anger was my fault.

Then I read the message again.

I could already imagine Derek responding to each sentence separately.

He would question the details.

He would tell me that I was remembering things unfairly.

He might focus on one word and ignore everything around it.

I deleted the draft.

My hands shook as I began again.

I am staying with my father for now. I need time and space. I am not ready to come home or discuss this in person tonight. Please respect that.

I read it twice.

It did not explain everything.

It did not make a case for my own innocence.

It did not ask him to agree with me.

It simply stated what I needed.

I pressed send.

For several seconds, I stared at the screen.

Then I put the phone on the sofa beside me.

My heart was beating so hard that I could feel it in my throat.

I had sent a message asking for space.

It should not have felt like a dangerous act.

But I had spent so long worrying about Derek’s reaction that even a small boundary felt like stepping into an unfamiliar room in the dark.

My father came in and sat in his armchair.

“Everything all right?”

“I sent him a message.”

“How do you feel?”

“Like I’ve done something terrible.”

He nodded slowly.

“That feeling might take some time to change.”

I looked at him.

“What if he gets angry?”

“Then we’ll respond to what happens. You don’t need to take back a reasonable request just because someone might dislike it.”

I pressed my hands together.

“I want him to understand.”

“I know.”

“I want him to understand why I left.”

“That’s a fair thing to want.”

“But I can’t make him understand.”

My father shook his head.

“No. You can tell him the truth. What he chooses to do with it is up to him.”

I looked at the phone.

There was no reply yet.

I had spent years believing that if I found the right words, Derek would finally understand how much he was hurting me.

I thought there was a perfect way to explain my feelings that would make him stop blaming me.

I had treated every argument as a problem of communication.

If I spoke calmly enough, perhaps he would listen.

If I apologized at the right moment, perhaps he would stop shouting.

If I gave him enough time, perhaps he would see what I had been trying to say.

But I could not find words that would make someone take responsibility if he did not want to.

I could not make myself safe by becoming better at predicting his moods.

That realization hurt.

It also made something clearer.

I had a right to ask for space even if Derek did not agree with my reasons.

I had a right to stay somewhere I felt safe.

I had a right to stop a conversation that frightened me.

Those rights did not disappear because I was married.

My phone vibrated.

Derek had replied.

So you're just going to abandon our marriage?

I stared at the words.

My stomach tightened, and for a moment I was back in the kitchen at home, trying to explain myself while he watched me with an expression I could never quite read.

I wanted to answer immediately.

I wanted to tell him that I was not abandoning anything, that I had spent years trying to make our marriage work, that leaving for one night did not erase everything we had shared.

My thumbs moved toward the keyboard.

Then I stopped.

The message had turned my request for space into an accusation.

I did not have to defend my entire marriage in response to one sentence.

I locked the phone.

My father watched me quietly.

“I don’t know what to say to that,” I admitted.

“You don’t have to say anything tonight.”

“I’m afraid that if I don’t answer, he’ll think he’s right.”

“Does answering guarantee he’ll think differently?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Then maybe you can let the message sit for a while.”

I set the phone on the coffee table.

We watched a television program neither of us paid much attention to.

I could hear the actors speaking, but I kept thinking about Derek’s question.

Was I abandoning our marriage?

I had never thought of myself as someone who gave up easily.

I had stayed through arguments I should not have had to endure.

I had apologized when I was hurt.

I had kept quiet when I wanted to speak.

I had worked to preserve the appearance of a happy marriage because I believed that was what commitment required.

But commitment could not mean pretending that fear was normal.

It could not mean ignoring a bruise because acknowledging it might upset someone.

And it could not mean surrendering every boundary to prove that I still loved my husband.

I didn’t know whether our marriage could be repaired.

I didn’t know whether Derek would take responsibility for what he had done.

I didn’t know what I would decide after a week, a month, or longer.

But I knew that I was not ready to return that night.

For once, I let that answer stand.

When the program ended, my father switched off the television.

“Do you want some tea before bed?”

“Yes, please.”

We went into the kitchen together.

He filled the kettle while I took two mugs from the cupboard.

I placed a tea bag in each one.

The kettle clicked off, and steam rose from the cups as we poured the water.

My phone remained in the living room.

I could still feel the worry waiting for me there, but I did not carry it into the kitchen.

We drank our tea at the table.

My father asked whether I wanted him to accompany me when I collected my belongings.

I told him I did.

He said we would arrange it when I felt ready.

We did not make promises about what would happen afterward.

We did not decide whether I would return to the house.

We did not discuss divorce or reconciliation.

We only agreed that I would not have to face the next step alone.

Before bed, I checked my phone one last time.

There were no new messages.

I placed it on the small table beside my bed and plugged in the charger.

Then I turned off the light.

The room was quiet.

I thought about the cake still sitting at home, the strawberries arranged across the top, and the dinner I had tried so hard to make perfect.

I had wanted a peaceful birthday.

I had thought that if I could keep everyone comfortable, the evening would go well.

Instead, the most important thing I had done that night was tell the truth.

I was hurt.

I was afraid.

I needed space.

Those words had not solved my marriage.

They had not made the bruise disappear.

They had not told me what my future would look like.

But they had given me a place to begin.

I closed my eyes.

For that night, I was staying where I felt safe.

And I did not need to apologize for it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: The
