he said.

I nodded.

The screen went dark.

I picked up the phone again.

There was a message waiting.

I read it once, then a second time.

Derek wanted to know when I was coming home.

There was no mention of the bruise.

No question about whether I had slept.

No acknowledgment of what I had told my father.

Just a question about when I would return.

I placed the phone on the table.

My father didn't ask what the message said.

I was grateful.

I needed a little time to understand why those ordinary words had unsettled me so much.

Part of me had expected an apology.

Another part had expected anger.

Instead, Derek had asked when I was coming back, as though the most important thing was restoring the usual arrangement.

I had spent years believing that if we could return to normal after an argument, then perhaps the problem had passed.

But normal had never meant that the problem was gone.

It had only meant that we had stopped talking about it.

I looked at my father.

"What if he says he's sorry?"

My father considered the question.

"Then you can listen to what he says."

I waited.

"But you don't have to decide anything based on one conversation."

I looked down at my hands.

I had wanted apologies so badly in the past that I had treated them as promises.

When Derek apologized, I would feel relieved.

I would believe that he understood.

I would tell myself that things could be different now.

Then another argument would happen, and I would begin the process again.

I had confused the end of an argument with the end of the behavior that caused it.

I didn't want to keep doing that.

"I don't know whether I can go back," I said.

My father took a sip of coffee.

"You don't have to answer that this morning."

I nodded.

For a while, we ate breakfast without discussing Derek.

My father asked whether I wanted more toast.

I said no.

He told me that he had some errands to run later, and I offered to help.

He said I didn't need to.

The conversation was ordinary enough that I began to relax.

Then my phone lit up again.

I didn't pick it up.

I could feel the old urge to respond immediately.

I wanted to explain where I was.

I wanted to reassure Derek that I wasn't trying to punish him.

I wanted to tell him that I still cared about our marriage and that I hadn't decided what would happen next.

But I was beginning to understand that I could care about what happened without being responsible for managing every feeling he had about it.

I could take time.

I could think.

I could decide what I needed before trying to guess what he wanted.

My father carried the empty plates to the sink.

I watched him rinse them beneath the tap.

He had done the same thing the night before, after bringing me toast.

Nothing about his actions was extraordinary.

He was simply taking care of ordinary things.

I realized that I had spent years believing that peace required constant work from me.

I had tried to make every room comfortable, every conversation smooth, every disagreement short.

I had believed that if I did enough, the people around me would stop being angry.

But peace that depended on one person staying frightened wasn't peace at all.

I picked up my phone.

I read Derek's message again.

Then I set it facedown on the table.

I wasn't ready to answer.

For once, I allowed that to be enough.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: The Message I Was Afraid to Answer

I woke before the alarm on my phone.
