You're in your own home."

I almost answered that it didn't feel like mine anymore.

The words came close.

Then I remembered how often I had swallowed things like that because I didn't want to make him angrier.

I took a breath.

"I don't feel comfortable staying tonight."

Derek's expression hardened.

"Because of one argument?"

I looked at him.

I wanted to tell him that it hadn't been one argument.

I wanted to list every night I had gone to bed frightened, every time I had apologized just to end a conversation, and every morning I had woken up wondering whether the previous evening had somehow been my fault.

But I didn't need to prove the entire history of my marriage in that hallway.

I had already told the truth.

I didn't have to make him agree with it before I could act on it.

"I've made my decision for tonight," I said.

"That's all I can decide right now."

Derek looked away.

He rubbed his hand over his mouth, then glanced toward the dining room.

The cake was still waiting on the counter.

The flowers were still on the table.

The dinner I had spent the day preparing was still there, unfinished.

For a moment, I felt guilty.

I imagined the wasted food and the empty chair.

I imagined what Derek might tell someone if they asked how my birthday had gone.

Then I realized that I was worrying about the appearance of the evening again.

Even now.

Even with my bag in my hand.

I was still trying to protect the story other people might hear.

My father opened the front door.

Cool air entered the hallway.

I stepped toward it.

Derek spoke once more.

"Emily, please."

I stopped.

He sounded different now.

Not quite angry.

Not quite apologetic.

For a moment, I wanted to turn around and believe that the evening had finally changed him.

Then I remembered that I had heard many different versions of his voice before.

A softer voice didn't erase what had happened.

I turned toward him.

"I need to go."

He didn't answer.

I walked outside with my father.

The door closed behind us.

I stood on the porch holding my small bag, looking at the steps where my father had first arrived that evening.

Earlier, I had been afraid he would see my face.

Now he had seen it, and I was no longer inside the house pretending it meant nothing.

I was still afraid.

But I was outside.

For that night, it was enough.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: At My Father’s House, Nobody Asked Me to Explain My Face Before I Could Sit Down and Catch My Breath

Derek stepped closer.
